Chapter Two
Jacklyn laid on her grandmother's bed and a book was held in her hands. Her hair dripped onto her clothes as she recently took a shower. Their stomachs were filled as they had also eaten dinner. Nicholas laid on the edge of the bed as he stared at the ceiling.
"I'm bored," He mumbled. " I miss having TV. I mean why are the Cons so worked up about it anyway? It's just TV..." Jacklyn ignored him but Nana lowered her magazine.
"Why don't you go play with your toys," Nan told him gently. He rolled over to face her.
"Cause I already did." He sighed. Nana raised her eyebrows.
"That was quick. We just had dinner."
"No, I mean I always play with them. It gets boring."
"How about drawing? Or coloring?" Jacklyn suggested as she lowered her book from her view. Nicholas groaned.
"Oh yes, I'd love a picture from you." Nana agreed.
"That's for babies." He sighed and sprawled out his arms and legs in annoyance. Jacklyn scoffed slightly and rolled her eyes, placing her nose back in her book. Nana sighed and shifted her feet away from him.
"Why don't you read a book?"
"Babies." He mumbled.
"Are you calling me a baby?" Jacklyn looked up with sharp eyes. Nicholas grinned.
"Maybe..." He tested. Jacklyn decided whether or not it was worth chasing him down the halls wanting to hit him over the head with her book or not. It was certainly going to shut him up for a while and it'd really make her satisfied if she did land a hit but she didn't get a chance to respond as a large bird flew in through the open window (Decepticon rules) and landed on Nicholas's stomach.
"Whoa, Laserbeak's here," Nicholas said with wide eyes as he stared up at the bird. Jacklyn tensed and Nana nervously stood to go retrieve their father. Jacklyn took out her phone to get a picture. Laserbeak stared down at Nicholas who giggled.
"I think it's just a drone. Laserbeak is yellow." Nicholas said with a grin.
"Stop playing around." Jacklyn shushed him. Jacklyn raised her phone, Carmen wasn't going to believe this. What did the Decepticon want? Before she could take a picture he looked up to her and her phone turned a bright blue. It flashed at her and the word START? flashed at her screen. The drone hopped off Nicholas. "Whoa...what happened to my phone?" Jacklyn whispered. Nicholas rolled over and took a look as she lowered the phone.
"Looks like a game. Press start," He told her. Jacklyn hesitated before doing so. The bird made a screeching noise before flying out of the window again. She heard the sound of the wind pick up and she gave the phone to him. She stared out the window and saw the drone fly way...along with many others. Her eyebrows furrowed.
"There's tons. They're all entering and leaving homes." She said as she watched them perch on the mailboxes and porches. Rain began to pour and splashed against her face. She quickly closed the window and looked over to him.
"Hey, some rules are starting to pop up," Nicholas said. Jacklyn sat down next to him.
"What's it say?"
"Rules: Don't share this game with your parents. Don't tell others what you have found. Don't give these items to anyone other than your personal Laserbeak drone. Don't leave curfew hours to retrieve these items unless your Laserbeak follows. Don't argue with the items. Don't resist the game. If you break any of these rules we will find you and make sure you complete it or you will be killed." Nicholas paled and looked up toward Jacklyn. Jacklyn bit her lip.
"Seems we don't have a choice here."
"When do we ever?" Nicholas whispered. Jacklyn nodded.
"Seems like we have to do all their dirty work." Nana spoke up from the doorway. The two kids looked up.
"Yeah...I mean what if I just so happen to lose my phone? How would they know?" Jacklyn asked. Nana frowned as she went to go sit down on the bed.
"The Laserbeaks. But I'm sure they'll give you another."
"Then they'd just not have to know," Jacklyn said as she accepted the rules. She looked through the list curiously. Her eyes widened. " A rose? And wait...we could get killed getting some of this! No, I'm not doing this. Come on Nicholas, let's go destroy my phone." Jacklyn grunted and got off the bed. Nicholas followed and Nana sighed. The two ran down the stairs and Jacklyn hummed.
"We should smash it!" Nicholas grinned.
"Well, that could work but then they'd know it was us. The only excuse for that would be a car running it over and it's past curfew hours." Jacklyn told him. Nicholas nodded slowly.
"Right..." He crossed his arms and began to think. Jacklyn stared down at her flashing blue screen. Think, Jacklyn, think...she then snapped her fingers.
"I've got it! We'll just delete the app." She laughed at how easy it was. Nicholas grinned.
"Oh right, duh." He shook his head. Jacklyn pressed home and went to her list and began to uninstall it. A loud crack of thunder echoed after a bright flash of lightning and they flinched. The app successfully was removed and they breathed in relief.
"There, they won't even know." Jacklyn shrugged and put her phone on the table. Nicholas nodded. "Alright back to my book," Jacklyn said heading for the stairs. Nicholas pouted.
"Can we play cards or something?" He asked pleadingly. Jacklyn paused in her steps and turned around.
"I don't know...Why don't you go to do your homework?" She asked placing her hands on her hips. He shrugged.
"I don't have any." He smiled brightly. Jacklyn narrowed her eyes.
"Liar." She smirked. He frowned.
"Am not!"
"You so are!" She laughed. Nicholas groaned.
"Fine I do but I'll do it tomorrow." He huffed. Jacklyn shook her head. She began heading back up to the stairs when a loud buzzing noise caught her attention. She turned around and her eyes widened and fear shook her spine. Her phone was vibrating loudly against the table and the screen was flashing red. The front door was whacked several times and she yelped. Nicholas whimpered.
"What's going on?" He panicked. Jacklyn gulped as she could make out Laserbeak through the dark night and the door's glass.
"They found out. Upstairs, now!" She shouted in a stern command. Nicholas ran past her and she ran to the door and went to lock it. Her eyes looked out the window and a squad car pulled up to her door. The tires were on her porch and she gasped. The Laserbeak's wings were red and he screeched loudly. She cursed under her breath. Screw the door, the vechicon was here. She turned around and began sprinting to her phone. She grabbed the phone and ran upstairs. She tried to go to her play store but it didn't respond to her. Jacklyn tried to not look through the window at the stairs. The lightning flashed and the vechicons face was there with a stern growl. She ran to her father's room and Nicholas was hiding by his father's leg.
"What's going on here?" He asked as he tried to calm his son down. Rules: Don't share this game with your parents. Jacklyn felt like crying. Don't make this worse.
"I need your gun." She said firmly.
"My what?" He asked in surprise. Jacklyn tried to calm herself.
"The Decepticons are here." She told him. His eyebrows raised.
"What are they doing here?"
"Jacklyn got a ga-."
"We don't know exactly." Jacklyn interrupted her younger brother who glared then realization kicked in. Her father stood.
"Stay here." He told them before running out of the room. The window by the bed was filled with light and Laserbeak flew in front of them. They screamed. Jacklyn ran over and opened it. The vechicon walked over as the Laserbeak flew in.
"Alright, Alright! I'll play your stupid game!" She cried as she took out her phone. The Laserbeak landed on the bed and he dropped the rose that was in his beak. Nicholas shivered. That was first on the list. Jacklyn walked over and held her phone out. Laserbeak placed his beak on the phone and in a few moments, it went back to flashing blue and the word CONTINUE? flashed. Jacklyn sighed and wiped her tears away before pressing to continue. The vechicon grunted.
"Next time you'll be killed." He threatened and walked away. The Laserbeak flew out the window and Nicholas ran over and closed it. The rain was splattered on the floor and he sighed.
"I can't believe we got off the hook," He mumbled. Jacklyn sighed.
"I'm sorry. I totally caused this..." She whispered as she stared at her phone. Nicholas frowned.
"Are you kidding? Besides almost dying that was fun! I was totally entertained."
"You're just saying that." She mumbled and looked at him. Nicholas sighed in defeat.
"You're right. I almost peed my pants." He huffed. Jacklyn shook her head.
"I need to talk to Carmen." She said and put her phone away.
"Why?"
"Best friend's are like therapists without having to pay. Besides, I'm hoping she didn't resist the game." She said. Nicholas blinked.
"Oh," He nodded and sat down in their father's chair. Jacklyn went to her room and picked up her walkie-talkie. She turned it on with shaking hands and spoke into it.
"Hello?" small static before a response.
"Hey, get the game too?" Carmen asked.
"Yeah. Tried to delete it. The vechicon showed up and nearly killed us." Jacklyn sighed and laid down on her bed. There was a moment of nothing but static. Jacklyn began to worry if she left her.
"We did too...apparently a lot of people have. Some are being killed."
"Wait, what?" She asked in surprise as she sat up.
"Yeah, can't you hear it? People outside are screaming their heads off and people are being shot or dragged away." Carmen told her quietly. Jacklyn trembled.
"O-oh." Jacklyn lowered her eyes.
"Yeah."
"Um, can I come over?"
"It's past curfew and if someone sees you then-."
"I know. But we can't just sit here and have people die. We need to go to someone who can stop it." She told her firmly with tears streaming down her face. Carmen sighed.
"The Autobots?"
"Yes."
"Alright, don't get caught though. Come through the back."
"Got it." She said and threw the walkie-talkie to the side. Jacklyn raced out of her room and down the stairs. She ran to her back door and opened it. She quietly shut it and ran to her gate of her fence. She quietly opened it and grimaced as she heard a loud scream. The rain was pouring on her and lightning flashed. Thunder boomed overhead and she opened the gate. She quickly closed it as she saw a squad car go by. Jacklyn opened it after waiting a moment and ran next door. She went up the back porch steps. Jacklyn banged on the back door frantically and would occasionally check the streets and behind her. She prayed no one would see her. Or even worse, she prayed no Laserbeak or vechicon would see her.
