Our Interview with Shruti Pathak
Warm regards! We're very excited to learn more about you. So first of all, tell us how you stumbled upon Wattpad and when.
Thank you! Well, elaborating upon my meeting with Wattpad, all the credit can be given to my dearest friends at school. Being transferred from my old school to a completely new school at a city called Vadodara, I had a gradual transition of everything in my life. From my habits to my friends, everything. And once, when we had a free period, we were randomly talking about various kinds of books and their unique plots. And that was the point of time, when my friend uttered a word called 'Wattpad'. All my friends were probably well versed with the website and so, they explained me as a whole, what it actually was and what is it for. When I reached home, the very same day, I couldn't cease to scroll through the Play Store of my tablet, and found this amazing app, a magnificent place for readers and authors of all sorts. And so thereafter, a time which was near the month of August in 2015, I have developed an affinity towards Wattpad, which is completely unbreakable.
Why did you decide to create The Cryptic?
Being on Wattpad for about a year now, I had established a mild liking towards various collaborations and conglomerations in here, which seek to proliferate their respective genres. But, while I have had a look over almost every group on Wattpad, I was in matter of fact, shocked to realise that there was no account that helped the Dark Fiction authors to grow and flourish, a genre which was deeply rooted in almost every Science Fiction and Fantasy book. With this intuition, I decided to start an account, a destination of assistance for young and experienced Dark Fiction authors and gradually made myself busy, in planning out its overall stature. I started inviting several popular Dark Fiction authors on Wattpad, to join hands and help me run the account, and interestingly, the responses of the invitations were almost always positive. And so, here I am in an amazing abode of Dark Fiction, which will grow to untouched heights and reach magnificent levels.
What compels you to pick up a pen and scribble down your thoughts? Is there any inspiration or motivation that you'd be willing to share?
As we all are well aware of the fact, that nothing is more powerful for transmission of feelings than the ultimate power of words. The most relevant or the sole reason with which I started writing was due to my extreme passion for scribbling down my otherworldly thoughts, and then moulding them to form a readable extract of words. With passion, I mean a real deep rooted passion. A passion which gives you the ideas of rescuing the protagonist of the story, while doing experiments in a Chemistry Lab. A passion which instigates your will to write about breathtaking technology in your book, while studying Science or IT. Yes, I'm talking about that level of passion.
In regard to things you've written, do you have a favorite? What feelings does it bring when you look back on it?
In the contemporary situation, I have two books up in my writing shelf, and I'm working hard to give them a polished feel. From the two books, The Lost World can straightforwardly be rendered as my favourite. When I read the book again, I feel myself to be proud and extremely pleased and traces of thoughts immediately occupy my mind, telling me how hard have I worked to make every scene relevant and perfect. The Lost World was actually my first real attempt at writing a story and having authored such a book, it indeed becomes a matter of satisfaction and pride. However, I have to learn from the mistakes that I have committed while writing the story, and make my writing skills more and more defined.
What part of writing do you find the simplest, and what aspects do you struggle with, if any?
While writing a story, the part that becomes simplest for me, are descriptions and feelings. They both seem to naturally connect with me, when they are being written on a piece of paper. Coming to descriptions, I'm far more better for natural destinations than materialistic places. In nature, I figure each of its constituents metaphorically and consider them to be living souls, each one having a different story to tell. While coming to feelings, it is the most natural of all. I generally find myself in the situation itself, and the appropriate reaction which I would do, steadily follows the words from my pen.
Now, if you ask the most difficult aspect of writing, it is violence and villainous thoughts for me. Some of you, who have read The Lost World, might already have felt my drawback in writing from a villain's point of view. They just seem so unnatural and unconnected to me, that writing them is no more than a tough war to fight. But, I'm working hard upon my drawbacks and trying to succeed in this aspect of transcription.
What do you consider advantageous and disadvantageous of being an author?
Let me first tell about the sphere of writing which is finite in nature, that is the Disadvantages. For me, being a high school student, writing sometimes becomes a real obstruction. Like, isn't it bad to have all those planning thoughts about your book, swimming across your mind, while you are sitting in a class? One or two months ago, realising the amount of time I was spending on Wattpad, I tried to get rid of it and never go to the website again. But, of course, it was an attempt done in futility. But yes, for a student, who needs to seriously be indulged in studies now, being an author becomes disadvantageous.
On the other hand, being an author has just so many advantages, that I might faint midway while referring them. Making you reinstate yourself in a different world and connecting to new people around, can be considered, to name a few.
Is there any funny memory of yours you would like to share with us? We won't tell anyone, maybe.
As a matter of fact, I have many funny moments in my life, happening everyday, but unfortunately, no prominent one to share.
Besides your own masterful creations, do you have any books you couldn't put down?
Yes, in the current phase of my life, I just have so many books in the drafts section, awaiting that fortunate day when they'll be published. Some of them are fantasy based, there is a book encircling my poems and I have other, which includes some comic strips that I tried to make. But Alas! Time has buckled me up, and I wouldn't like to publish books, which I would rarely update. This wouldn't be fair on reader's part, right?
Who's your favorite author and/or idol?
Every book has a different story to tell, but it's us who measure it's quality. I love almost every book which I pick up and read, so in general, I do not have a specific favourite book. Every book in my life is special and worthy for me, and none is worthless.
My inspirational source as well as my idol is the author of the Lord of the Rings series, J.R.R. Tolkien. I mean, just take a book authored by him and read it continuously, and then you'll understand what do I mean to say. His exceptional capability to describe scenes and places, and his mastered skill of writing dialogues is truly worth admiring.
Besides writing, what do you do in your free time? Do you have any hidden talents that you would like to share?
Besides writing, reading is the next best hobby for me. Reading can seriously make you travel around the world, while you just sit on your chair. It can make you live with a personality, whose autobiography you have commenced admiring. It can give you shocks and chills, with no natural change in weather around. It is a true gift of God, I must say. I also like to draw and paint, a perfect way of escaping into eternity.
Coming to talents, I do have a good count of them, and am equally proud of them as well. I'm a good orator as well as an artist. I have won quite many awards at state levels in these spheres, but unfortunately, couldn't go beyond that level. I also am proud of my handwriting, which I know is pretty weird to be a pride factor, but yes, I am. I am also a good student at my school, which stands out to be the best of all.
So, are there any new projects you're working on?
No. Right now, I'm not working upon any new project but am trying to polish my book, The Lost World and am busy rewriting it. After having completed with it, I'll continue writing my another book, Of Mists and Shadows.
The most awaited question of every young reader, do you have any childish habits? Are you proud of them or embarrassed? Do you like chocolates or cartoons?
Childish habits? I'm a child in myself. Even at the school in my class, I'm the youngest of all, and so, I'm sometimes referred to be as the 'child'. I'm neither proud nor embarrassed of the fact, because of two reasons. One, that being a child might leave you insecure in this fast growing world, and second, keeping that childishness inside you, will never take you to a wrong path and will always keep you at the right tract.
For the second question, I must say I love both of them. Who doesn't like to see Tom and Jerry or eat a Cadbury?
What do you prefer, sweet or salty? Why?
I actually prefer both of them, to a certain extent. Eating any of these too much, makes me feel weary and sick. However, sweet helps me feel happy while salty helps me feel super active.
It was a pleasure talking to you. We hope you progress by leaps and bounds and continue to entertain us with your masterful words.
Thank you so much!
The stars of the unknown galaxies, tethered to limitless extents of the universe, might seem stagnant and monotonous, but their fate is entirely antonymous. They keep WATCHING. Watching with their keen eyes and burning souls, to avenge what they have lost.
