Our Interview With Christine Bottas
Hello everyone!
Today we have Nyhterides the writer of 'Goblin Garden' with us.
Warm regards Nyhterides. Welcome to an official interview from @TheCRYPTIC_ . It's our honor to interact with an inspiring writer like you. We hope that you'll have a great time.
Thank you for inviting me over. Nice to be here :)
First of all, tell us how you stumbled upon Wattpad and when.
I joined Wattpad on June 12, 2013. It was serendipity. I was browsing for writing sites, with no intention on joining one for more than a few months. I found Wattpad and joined because it looked wonderful. I began posting a few short stories then decided to share some of my poems in a collection titled 'Goblin Garden'. It was one of the best things I have ever done, two years later 'Goblin Garden' was published by a small house here in Greece.
Wow! So what do you think about THE CRYPTIC's theme? What are your views regarding dark fiction?
I love dark fiction! If there is one genre that give me tremendous joy and pleasure to write, it is dark, dark, dark fiction.
What do you like to read? Do you have a favourite genre or any specific likes?
Though I prefer writing anything dark, I don't have a favourite genre to read. Of course, I adore darker works (my favourite author is Poppy Z Brite), but I am also a fan of biographies and comics. To be honest, if a story is good it can be any genre. Right now I'm starting 'Ulysses' by James Joyce. If I come across a collection of short stories, I will easily buy that book, regardless of the genre and author, they are my lil' treasures.
What compels you to pick up a pen and scribble down your thoughts? Do you have any inspiration or motivation?
Inspiration can come from anywhere. I'm a day-dreamer so I can easily make things up in my head. A dead-line can be motivation, too (I had a deadline for 'Goblin Garden' and 'Q'), I can write pretty well under pressure it seems.
Being a writer, what's the easiest part of writing and which aspect do you consider the most challenging?
The easiest part of writing is when I have time, silence and space to write, the most challenging is when I have none of those. I used to dislike editing, found it a challenge, but lately I like it more and more.
What kind of environment do you prefer to write in?
Quiet, private and dark! I usually write at night after everyone is asleep and there are no sounds. I leave on just enough light to see the keyboard. Not that I haven't written early with the whole world awake, 'Q' was actually written during the day. I prefer the dark, silent lil' spaces for my Gothic or dark fiction (which is a huge chunk of my works) and day for the other genres.
What's your first piece of writing, if you can remember? What thoughts does it bring to you when you look back at it?
A short story called 'Cleocatra' in elementary school (grade 4 maybe). 'Cleocatra' is about an Egyptian cat who decided she did not want to live in Egypt anymore, she wanted to see the world. Her two best friends, a dog and a horse, did not want her to go, but they said they understood that this was something she had to do. Cleo had many adventures, and though she had a great time seeing amazing places and doing grand things, she realized there is no place like home and returned. Her friends were happy she was back, and they all lived happily ever after.
It was the best story so the teacher put it up on the wall for everyone to see. I was very proud. I still have that story.
Tell us about your growth as an author.
I grow and learn every day. I'm at the start of things. There is so much to learn and do. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning who has just unwrapped her first gift and there are a million more waiting.
Do you have a favorite author or book?
'Drawing Blood' by Poppy Z Brite. PZB's works have been a huge inspiration to me. I am a fan of this amazing author's style and wording.
Besides writing, do you have any hidden talents?
I can paint/draw quite well. My mother has a talent for painting/drawing and one of my uncles is a famous painter, so I think I got that from them. I taught myself how to play 'Moonlight Sonata' and 'Für Elise' in two weeks on the piano. My dad was very musical and could play the piano and guitar without having had lessons, I got that and my ability to write from him (he was a well-known poet and freelance writer for newspapers back in his youth).
You're sitting in front of a brand new aspiring writer, what do you say?
If your love for this comes from the marrow of your bones never stop writing, even if it is only for yourself.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Don't be afraid to tell us something funny, we won't tell.
Apart from reading and writing... Going to the shops! I'm not a shopaholic but I enjoy even just window shopping. I also like puttering around the house, fixing this, tidying up that, and playing video games.
Now, the most awaited question of every young reader, do you have any childish habits? Do you like cartoons or chocolates?
Yes, I do!
-reading 'Archie' and 'Snoopy' comics
-watching 'Sponge Bob'.
-collecting stickers and sticking them EVERYWHERE in the house.
Do you prefer sweet or salty?
I dislike salt, unless it's Himalayan salt. Yet I will put an insane amount of regular salt on my popcorn (go figure). I don't like sweet either, unless its chocolate, but I prefer sweet to salty.
It was nice talking to you. Thanks for your precious time. We really appreciate it and hope you'll prosper leaps and bounds.
Thank you for the lovely interview, darkling. :)
There is a shadow lurking in the edge of our perception, in the worst of our nightmares... it is us. It has always been us.
'Goblin Garden' is a collection of 23 dark poems written in both English and Greek.
