Chapter 19. Bulletproof Heart
Okay... so there's some more OOCness by Tarkin and Galen in this chapter... okay there's quite a bit of OOCness for Galen. But hey, fanfiction.
I don't own anything.

Galen's P.O.V.
I watch in horror as Orson approaches Tarkin. "Orson, no!" I cry. "You can't do this!" I pull on the handcuffs even more. My wrists are raw from the damage that I've done from pulling so hard earlier. I should be the one to die since I didn't have the willpower to turn down Tarkin's demands to make this portal and the pellets he calls bullets.
Orson stops walking about three meters away from Tarkin. I'm scared of what will happen and Jyn looks concerned, too. Tarkin, on the other hand, is enjoying the moment. "Trying to be the hero, Orson Krennic? You were far better off as a director than you will ever be as a hero. I'll say this once. Get out of the way. Let me take care of the two pests behind you and I'll give you a promotion. You can be back on the council if you want."
"Does it look like I care about the kriffing council or Empire anymore, Tarkin?" Orson growls. "You've caused so much pain to everyone you have met. I'm going to end this here and now."
"Orson! Please! Don't do this!" I beg. I can't lose my best friend to the Empire again. Orson bolts towards Tarkin and I can see what's going to happen seconds before it does.
Tarkin's pistol goes off. Jyn squeaks and covers her head and I do the same. When I look up, Orson has a deep cut on his left arm. But he's reached Tarkin and is trying to achieve a knock out. Tarkin shoots the pistol again and the bullet lodges itself into Orson's right leg. Orson winces and grips the wound. However, the pain seems to have fueled his will to fight. Orson keeps attacking Tarkin and it's scary. I've never seen him this angry before.
Jyn looks at me helplessly and I can see terror on her face. I don't blame her. Orson has become a fighting machine and I'll bet Jyn saw a wide variety of his skills when she crossed over to this realm with him.
Tarkin whips out his electro knife and Orson receives a large incision over his left eye, causing him to scream in agony. I can't handle it anymore. I slam my hands against the concrete pole and break them. It hurts like hell but at least I can pull my hands out of the cuffs now. "Jyn, stay here," I command and run over to help. I seize the metal piece Jyn had been holding when she came through the portal.
I get between the two and push Tarkin backwards with my fist, then use the metal piece to give Tarkin a few nicks, driving him away from my friend. I've never hurt someone like this before and it takes every bit of my mental strength I have to be able to injure Tarkin. I kick Tarkin in the stomach, sending him sliding across the room. Then, I run over to Orson's who's struggling with the blood dripping into his eye. "Hold still," I commanded and carefully used my sleeve to wipe away the blood.
"Thanks." Orson smiles at me and I can't help but smile back. Then Orson's grin disappears as he says "You built that portal, right?" I nodded, ashamed of my mistake. "Then you know how to reverse engineer it. I'll keep Tarkin busy. Get that portal shut down." I nod again and run to the portal while Orson charges at Tarkin.
Everyone has their secrets and one of mine that I had never told anyone, not even Lyra, is I always build a self-destruct trigger area on my bigger projects to disable them if they become too dangerous. That way, no one can use my creation as a potential weapon. The portal is no different. I override the portal system to shut it down before I blow it up. It will do less damage if it's off. The system says it will take a moment to shut down everything. Fine. I just have to hope Tarkin doesn't notice what I'm up to.
The minute feels like forever. But it finally shuts down. I carefully time pressing the self-destruct trigger until Orson and Tarkin are far enough away that hopefully it won't hurt them. Then I set off the explosion. A loud CRACK splits through the air along with a shock wave. Jyn is thrown off her feet and Tarkin and Krennic go flying across the room. I'm knocked to the ground and slide across the floor a little ways.
When I get back up, I search for Jyn. She's on the floor, looking a little dazed. Tarkin is forcing himself to his feet, wincing. Orson is still on the ground. I look closer and see that he's in shock from being rammed to the floor.
I run over to him. "Orson! Are you okay?" I kneel next to him and shake him a little. Orson responds by pushing my hand away.
Orson looks tired. "Have you ever seen an iguana?" He asks. His words are slurred a little bit.
"A what?"
"An iguana. They're interesting creatures. I've always wanted one as a pet. Do you think they exist in the realm of Muertos."
I see Tarkin standing on his feet now. He hasn't attacked us yet, which surprises me. "That's very interesting and I don't know," I said to Orson quickly. "But you need to get up."
Orson laughs a little and for some reason, the laughter made me feel sick. "I think I'll just admire the ceiling a little longer... if you don't mind. Argh, I'm tired."
"Orson, this isn't like you."
The former director looks into my eyes. My heart nearly stops when I see his eyes don't possess that spark they held a minute ago. "You know, I was thinking... if I ever had offspring-"
"ORSON!" I snap. I don't like using that tone of voice on him but he doesn't seem to be listening. "What's going on?! Snap out of it!"
"Just stand up. You'll find out." Orson closes his eyes. I stand up and nearly scream at what I saw. There's a bullet lodged into Orson's chest, right near the heart.
"No, no, no no no no!" I moan and fall back to my knees. "Orson! Orson, wake up!" I seize his shoulders and shake him. "Come on, come on! Wake up and tell my you're okay!" I plead. Orson doesn't respond. Tears fall from my eyes. My best friend... is gone...
I start to cry. This is all my fault.
No. this isn't just my fault. This is the Empire's as well. Tarkin is responsible for all the pain he's caused in both realms. I'm not going to let him get away with this. I'll finish what Orson started. I stand up and grip the piece of metal so tightly it starts to dig into my flesh. I'm going to kill Tarkin for everything he has put anyone who's come in contact with him through.
Tarkin looks surprised as I advance towards him. He raises his pistol. "Don't take another step!"
"Or what?" I challenge. "What will you do? Shoot me? You don't have any bullets left. I counted how many times you shot your pistol on one cartridge pack. Tarkin hisses through his teeth and tries to shoot but the blaster gives the dreaded click of emptiness. I smirk. "You've lost." I said. Then I swing the metal bar. I don't remember what happened next but I would live to regret that day forever.
Jyn's P.O.V.
"You've lost," Papa snarls to Tarkin. I watch as Tarkin tries to kill Papa but the blaster is empty. A short sense of relief floods through me. Then that feeling disappears as Papa strikes Tarkin with the piece of metal. I watch in dismay as Papa does everything he told me never to do.
Papa gets behind Tarkin and uses the metal bar to choke him. The next thing I know, Tarkin is on the ground and Papa is kicking around much like what Tarkin was doing to Cassian. I want to scream and tell my father to stop but my throat refuses to release a sound. This is not the father I know. Who is this monster? I can't turn my eyes away. My heart is heavy and I want to run away, never looking back.
The metal is now digging into Tarkin's shoulder, causing the man to scream in pain. Suddenly, Papa yanks it out and runs over to Cassian. Oh, Force! Please don't hurt Cassian! Thankfully, he doesn't. Papa grabs the blaster that had been somewhat close Cassian and points it towards Tarkin. That's when I break. "Papa! No!" I scream.
Tarkin looks surprised. I didn't expect him not to be. It's not often that a Rebellion member will try to save a die-heart Imperial. I thought I had gotten used to watching my enemies die in front of me. But something broke my heart. If Tarkin was to die, he deserved a quick death, not this painful one that he was receiving. "Papa! Please! Don't do this!"
"Do you have any idea who this man is?!" Papa roars. "What he has done to the galaxy? To US!?" I know who Tarkin is. I know of all the pain he's brought to the Galaxy. But this isn't right. Tarkin tries to snatch the blaster but my Papa is too fast. Tarkin gets a hard slap in the face instead.
"At least give him a quick death!" I cry.
My Papa still has that deadly look in his eyes. "He deserves every hit he gets." Papa raises his arm with the metal and Tarkin cries out. Suddenly someone grabs Papa from behind and drags him away from Tarkin. It's Mama.
"Galen, calm down," she whispers. "There's no need to do this."
"Lyra. Let. Me. Go," Papa hisses in a low, growling voice.
Mama yanks the blaster from Papa's hand and pushes him across the room to a corner. "Galen. There is no need for this. Stay here."
Papa scowls. But he stays in the corner. Mama walks over to Tarkin and picks up his blaster. She opens both blasters and transports one cartridge to Tarkin's blaster. Then she points Tarkin's blaster at its owner's head and fires.
That's when I lose it. I begin to cry, alerting both my parents. Papa starts forwards but Mama stops him with a glare. She runs to my side and kneels next to me. Mama pulls me into a tight hug. "Sweetie, it's okay. It's okay. Everything's over. You're home." I cry for a while, glad to release all my pain in the form of tears.
"Mama? Will K-Krennic and Cassian and Bodhi and B-Baze and Chirrut and-and Kaytu be okay?"
"I'm sure they will. They're strong." Mama rocks me gently back and forth. "They're going to make it. No one can die in the realm of the dead. No one except for Tarkin."
Lyra's P.O.V.
It's over. Tarkin is dead. The portal is gone and my daughter is home. So why do I feel like this was no victory.
Perhaps it was how the battle was played out. First, stormtroopers flooded us, then stormtroopers were sent to the realm of the living, possibly booting the war in the physical realm. Next, Orson went after Jyn and our group of eight were slowly picked off by none other than Tarkin. Krennic returned with Jyn and went after Tarkin, only to be defeated. Finally, Galen turned into a killer, though I ended up delivering the killing blow to Tarkin.
Jyn falls asleep from the exhausting toll the day has taken on her. I wake Malik and Ryln, planning to have them help me carry out the Rogue One crew. Surprisingly, some stormtroopers ask to help. A few even thank me for taking out Tarkin and freeing them from the Empire's clutches. The troopers offer medical assistance, something that I'm hesitant to jump at but Ryln and Malik aren't.
As soon as the injured and Jyn are in in Imperial medical bay, I walk over to Galen. "What was that for?!" I cry. "I know you were trying to do the right thing but you should have just killed him, not drag out his death."
"I couldn't let him die without regret for the pain he has caused the two realms!" Galen argues back.
"You better not do that again. I'm afraid to let you unsupervised around Jyn."
"Lyra!"
"I have my eye on you, Galen. You're not the pacifist scientist genius I married anymore." I turn and walk away. I need to go outside and clear my head.
