Chapter 18. The Trial
While Cassian fights the Empire, Orson and Jyn are trying to survive the step between the Realms of Viva and Muertos. So how are they doing?
I don't own anything.

Orson's P.O.V.
I was right. It did hurt. A lot. What a painful way to re-die.
However, I forgot what pain felt like when we were cast into the calm yellowish some that Galen and Lyra had found me in. Jyn and I glance at each other. "This isn't too bad," I comment.
"Just wait," she said and raises her hand to point to the growing vortex ahead. "It gets a lot worse."
We float towards the vortex. When it's close enough, I can see the turmoil inside of it. I twist my hand and clasp Jyn's wrist. It's one thing to have us tied together but the changes of the strap snapping or cutting through our skin are high. Jyn does the same. "Do you want your staff?" She asks.
I study her for a moment. Would it better for her to have the staff or me? A staff is really a two-handed weapon. "That might be a better idea," I said after a moment. It would take less effort for her to control the small metal piece versus the long staff.
We switch weapons just moments before we're pulled into the vortex. Immediately, we're tossed around and I can feel the strain on my wrist from trying to hold on to Jyn. I hear terrified screams of innocent lives I've taken, I see the regrets I had lived in my last moments of my first life. I do everything I can to block those voices out.
Suddenly we stop spinning. Jyn and I are both shaken terribly. We look at each other. Jyn starts to laugh. "We made it farther than Cassian and I did," she said brightly.
I smile a little. But I know this isn't the end. "Get ready for the real fight," I said. Jyn nods and I notice that she looks healthier than when I found her. I also realize that I can't feel my wounds anymore. I check my hand. All the cuts from holding the metal too tightly are gone. So going between realms heals your body? Great!
Jyn and I stay in the calm area, floating softly. When we're pulled into the next frantic part, I see other types of creatures, mainly shadows. A shadow can't be defeated physically but it can haunt and blind you from the actually predators.
"On your left!" Jyn yells. There's some giant creature thing that looks like a tick heading for us. I swing my staff into the creature. It knocks it back a little but not enough for me to be satisfied. Jyn is dealing with other enlarged bugs on her side. She's having better success than I am.
I twist myself so our backs are together. I clamp my teeth on the staff and pull Jyn's stick-blaster thing from her belt. Let's see if blaster shots kill in this part. To my surprise, they do.
Jyn sees what I'm doing and smiles. "Great!" She shoves the metal where her blaster was and takes the staff from my mouth. Jyn uses it to knock aside smaller creatures. "Krennic, use the metal instead." I obey and swap out her stick-blaster for the metal. Jyn and I hold on to the staff with our tied hands. I disable the large bugs with the metal and Jyn shoots them. It takes us no time to learn how to work together efficiently. We make a good time.
It's actually fun beating up the creatures. Then the bugs begin to run from us. Jyn and I cheer, thinking that we had won. How wrong we were. I look up to see a large swirling airstream. "Dammit!" I hiss. "We're going to be torn apart again!"
Jyn puts away her stick-blaster. She takes the staff from out tied hands. "We'll have to survive it." She and I lock wrists again. She looks at me and says "Are you with me?"
"Well, I'm kind of tied to you so I don't have a choice."
"I was looking for a more positive answer."
"That's not positive? Fine. Yes, I'm with you." The suspense of what will happen in this next area makes me feel sick in the stomach. But I never anticipated how badly it was going to be. I don't remember anything except for pain throughout my body. I can hear Jyn screaming next to me and I wouldn't be surprised if I was screaming myself.
Somewhere in the middle of the hurricane, I open my eyes to see Galen and Tarkin. Tarkin is on the ground and Galen has the eyes of a killer. I have never seen Galen like that before and to be honest, I never want to see it. Ever. I try to reach for Galen to stop him from killing Tarkin and ruining his killing innocence. But I'm not fast enough and Tarkin dies in the hands of Galen. I can feel tears in my eyes as I watch Galen completely destroy Tarkin. Had Galen gone mad because of all the torture I had put him and his family through?
My visions continue, burning through my mental strength as I see Chirrut, Baze, Bodhi and Lyra shot by the special pellets. All four look dead. I see Cassian go insane when Bodhi was knocked down. Cassian takes out the remaining stormtroopers and goes for Tarkin. Tarkin kicks Cassian senseless through unspeakable ways. The vision of Galen going crazy replays right after that. I was right. This was all my fault. I should be the one being beaten and killed by Tarkin.
"Krennic! Krennic!" It's Jyn's voice. A vision of her struggling to stand is brought before me. "Don't do it!" Jyn is crying over her father's body. It looks like the Eadu scene except that part of the portal run behind her gives away her location. Was this the future? Were all the efforts to stop the Empire... worthless?
My right wrist twists awkwardly and it feels like Tarkin is trying to break my arm. I hear something snap. I don't feel the pain but I'm probably about to die anyway. I can feel myself falling and I refuse to fight it. I'm dying and I deserve it for everything I've done.
Something hits me across the face and the visions disappear. I blink a few times to clear my vision. Jyn is floating in front of me. "What happened back there?! You were screaming and crying and it was not from the hurricane winds trying to pull you into two."
I shake my head. "I made a mistake," I tell her. "I tried to stop the Empire in the afterlife and all it's brought is pain to your friends and parents." I look down at the abyss below me. "And now you're going to experience the same thing trying to reach the realm of the dead. Everyone that I have met has been hurt in ways associated with me."
Jyn floats a little higher so her eye level is at mine, taking my right hand with her. She pushes my chin up so I have to look up at her. "Mope all you want afterwards but you have a mission to complete. We're almost there. I can sense it."
I sigh. "You should go without me. I don't want to hurt anyone else."
Jyn frowns. "When did you become so insecure about yourself?" She shoves my staff into my hands. "You said you were going be with me all the way. Well, guess what? You don't have a choice. You want to fix everything you say you've screwed up? A slow, painful death isn't the answer. We're going to make it through and you're going to help fix the wrongs."
I take a moment to process this. Finally, I take a deep breath and nod to her. "Alright. I'll do it."
Jyn nods. "Good."
"Good," I copy.
We stare at each other with determined looks in our eyes. Finally, Jyn turns away and says "To make sure we both crossover, I have a plan. All you need to do is trust me. You can do that, right?"
"Of course I can," I said. "I mean, I trusted you when we entered this trial. I just hope you trust me."
"Excellent. We're on the same page." We head back into the storm. It takes everything we have to stay together. Somehow, the two of us find the strength to pull off the feat.
After what felt like an eternity, I see a light. "There it is!" Jyn yells.
The portal opening is smaller than both of us. Basically, only one can enter at a time. "So what's the plan?" I shout.
"You trust, I act!" Not the answer I would have liked but it works. "Hold on to me tight and when I tell you to, let go!" Oh great, that doesn't sound good. Jyn swings the metal and cuts the strap tying us together. It's harder to hang on to her but I won't let go. Not until she says so. Jyn grits her teeth and watches the portal carefully.
"Now!" She yells. I release her and she kicks me in the side extremely hard. I'm whipped into a bright white area and tossed blindly through the air. I can hear Jyn yelling off to my side... or behind me... I can't really tell. It's hard to know which way is upright.
Suddenly I hit the ground. My staff is knocked from my hand and I uncontrollably roll across the floor. I can hear Jyn grunting next to me and the clang of metal against metal. She must have dropped the metal piece.
When we stop rolling, I take a moment to orient myself. I open my eyes and realize we've fallen a few meters from where Galen is chained up.
"Papa!" Jyn gasps. She gets to her feet and I do the same. Then I hear a moan as the sound of a bone cracking makes me turn my attention to Tarkin and Cassian. Cassian looks like he's about to die and it's almost like my vision came true. No, the vision did come true. Bodhi, Lyra, Chirrut and Baze... they're all down the exact same way my vision depicted them.
Cassian looks up at me. He coughs up some blood and says some raspy words. "I'm sorry... I failed."
No, he can't be dying! Please tell me he's not dying! I bite my lip and do my best to smile. "You kept the portal open, I consider that a successful mission." If this is really the end for Cassian, I want him to die knowing that he completed a mission. I help Jyn to Galen. I know what I have to do next and I don't want her to get injured.
Cassian smiles. Then his eyes cloud over and he closes them. I sigh as I watch his tired body become limp and lifeless.
I look up at Tarkin. It's time to settle things once and for all. I'm going to take out this man and end this fight forever.
========================================
I tried to write a good trial for Jyn and Krennic but it's probably not as bad as how I described some others.
Also, I sketched up an idea on what a Markavipe might look like.
I feel like it's a cross between a reek, a pig and an ankylosaurus.
