Chapter 17. Scarif
Please excuse the OOC Tarkin moments in this chapter.
I don't own anything.

Orson's P.O.V.
My head hurts terribly. I know I haven't been unconscious for long, because I don't remember blacking out. What gives the blackout away is the fact that I don't really remember what's going on. I lay there on the ground for a while, wondering what was digging into my back and hand. It's not until I decide to find out do I realize I'm laying on my staff awkwardly and my hand's bleeding from holding the sharp piece of metal so tightly. I let the piece of metal go.
When my memory is returned, I find the strength to sit up. I'm laying in a lot of soot and the wind it softly blowing it across the landscape. Is this what Scarif had become?
It takes all my strength to stand. I can feel every blaster bolt hit I received from the stormtroopers. It hurts a lot more in the physical realm than it did in the Realm of Muertos. I wonder how Jyn was feeling.
Jyn! I completely forgot about her! I begin searching for her through the massive piles of soot. She could be anywhere since she was torn from my arm. Hell, she could be on a different planet. What were the closest planets to Scarif? I take my staff off and use it as support to walk around, which is hard to do with the uneven ground. "Jyn!" I call, hoping she'd reply. I doubt it. The wind is blowing away my words.
I find her by a small swamp. Wait... Cassian said she died with him near a water source... which means that I had probably landed right about where the tower had been.
Jyn is laying in a crumpled heap. I reach down and carefully turn her over so she's on her back. She begins to cough and I support her head on my knee. She's awfully pretty, even in this sickly state.
Jyn's eyes finally open a little. "Papa..?" She whispers. I wish Galen was here. He would know what to do in this situation.
"Hey, Jyn," I whisper. "How do you feel?"
"Like reekshite," she replies. She coughs a little before croaking for water.
I set her head down. "I'm going to look for some. I'll be right back." I don't hesitate and run as fast as I can, searching for some clean water for her to drink. My wounds sting terribly but there are more important things than whining about injuries. I search as long as I dare to leave her. Unfortunately, there's nothing. I can't find a single drop of clean water. I don't want to return to her without some water but I don't think I have a choice. I can't leave her alone for too long.
I return and tell her the truth. Jyn just groans. "I'm sorry," I say quietly.
"Who are you?" She moans. "I can't see straight."
I hate having to answer this question. No doubt about it, she'll lose whatever trust she has in me now if I tell her the truth. When I don't answer in a reasonable time, Jyn reaches up and begins patting the top of my head. They weren't the most gentle pats but I didn't care. "What are you doing?"
"You sound familiar... I think I know you... I'm trying to find out if I recognize you..." I don't like the way her hand is prodding around my face but if it makes her feel more secure, fine.
Jyn's hand finally traces my jawline just as eye unfocused eyes start to coordinate themselves. Her eyes widen and she jumps back. "Krennic?!" I try to stop her before she hurts herself but she slaps my hand away. "Get away from me!"
"Wait! Jyn! I'm trying to help you!"
"Yeah, right!"
"Your father sent me."
"Prove it!" This was where that necklace would have come in handy. I sigh and try to think of something that would prove my point. I look around the area for anything. There's nothing for me to use. "Thought so," Jyn says coldly.
I take a deep breath. If I couldn't win her trust with a physical object, maybe some words would jog her memory. "I'm going to help you. And if you want to see your parents again-"
"You're putting seeing my parents at a ransom?"
I swear, she was just like Cassian. "No, I didn't say that. You just have to trust me and I can help you reunite with your parents."
"Why should I trust you?"
"Because without me, you can't survive the crossover to the realm of the dead." She's still suspicious. "Plus, trust goes both ways." Jyn freezes and I know she is processing my words. "Think about it," I say and stand up. "I won't go anywhere until you make a decision."
I walk back to where I had fallen and pick up the piece of sharp metal. I would probably need it to fight the mite things. It worked before. I head back to Jyn, hoping she has come to a decision. She's still processing my words.
Jyn looks up at me eventually. "I'll do it. But how are we going to get to the... dead place?"
I hadn't thought of that. I pull my blaster out and check the cartridge. It's empty. So much for that way out. "Well... we have to die... together..."
"You didn't think that far ahead? No wonder you were demoted."
Did she really have to bring up the past? I sigh and put my blaster to my hip. "Thanks..."
Jyn lays down and looks at the sky. I sit next to her and think. Maybe some stormtroopers will miraculously appear and shoot us. But what are the chances? I toss the metal piece up and down gently.
I notice Jyn's eyes are following the metal. She's also inspecting the cuts in my hand. "Is that metal sharp?"
"Yes."
"Could it pierce through something thick?"
"Probably. It would depend on how think it is."
"Give it to me." I do carefully. Jyn slides her finger along the edge until she cuts herself. Then she smiles. "We can use this."
I had considered using but I feared that it would bring bigger problems than we wanted. And we had to die together. I relay my concerns to Jyn. She and I spend some time thinking about a solution. There's not much around to use. Sure, we could suffocate in all these ashes but one of us might die long before the other.
Then, a light bulb goes off. I take off my staff and break off the strap. "Hold out your hand." Jyn obeys and I tie her left wrist to my right wrist. "This is going to be really painful," I say.
"What's the plan?"
I hold up the metal. "I'm going to kill us with this. I'll strike myself first since it will take longer for me to die. Then I'll do you." I hand her my staff. "Don't let go of this unless I tell you to."
Jyn looks at me like I've lost it (I probably have anyway). But she agrees. I hold the metal away from my chest and take a deep breath. This was going to hurt a lot...
=====================================
Cassian's P.O.V.
"Bodhi! Bodhi! Come on!" I shake Bodhi, trying to wake him. Bodhi doesn't wake and I fear I've lost him. "Come on, Bodhi." I can feel tears in my eyes.
A loud crash makes me snap my attention away from Bodhi. K2 has been disabled and collapses against a control panel. That makes me and Ryln and Malik (assuming they're still standing) the last ones conscious. Tarkin has taken out everyone else.
I look at the remaining stormtroopers in the room. There's only about a score or so. I pick up my staff and swap my blaster out for Bodhi's. I'm going to have to take out the boss. I fight the remaining stormtroopers with everything I have. By the time all of them are down, I'm exhausted and in pain from the many shots I received. But it was just me and Tarkin.
I raise Bodhi's pistol. This was it. Galen starts yelling something but I don't listen. I pull the trigger. Tarkin flinches. Nothing happens.
"What the..?" I check the cartridges. They're still there. So why wouldn't the thing fire? I try again. And again. The gun doesn't go off.
Tarkin laughs. "Your gun is not compatible for the bullets." He slaps the gun out of my hand and kicks me to the ground. I try to get up but Tarkin continues to knock me down. Over and over he rams my tired body into the hard ground. After a while, I begin to lose my sense of pain. This can't be good.
Tarkin leaves me to lay helplessly on the ground. He boots Bodhi's gun just out of reach. He walks over and unties Galen. "You've done well, Erso. Now stabilize this thing to handle dozens of stormtroopers going through the realms at the same time." Galen does so and Tarkin calls in more stormtroopers. The stormtroopers enter by waves and jump through the portal. Meanwhile, Tarkin handcuffs Galen to a concrete pole. "When I have sent all my stormtroopers in, I will kill you. You will die knowing that your work has exceeded all expectations and you have helped the Empire towards another step towards victory."
It's horrifying, watching all the stormtroopers. Then, a miracle happens. The portal flashes a bright light and knocks over everyone in the room. When I open my eyes, Orson and Jyn are standing there. I've never felt happier.
I feel dizzy all of a sudden. Orson looks at me just as my vision begins caving in on me. "I'm sorry... " I whisper. "I failed."
"You kept the portal open," said Orson. He helps Jyn to her father. "I consider that a successful mission."
I smile. If this is the end of my life, at least I'll go out knowing that I completed another mission. The last of my vision is clouded over and I don't remember anymore.
