The cover does not have a lot of whistles and bells but the simplicity is nice.

This blurb is immensely attention-grabbing. It tells you enough to make you want more.

Prologue:

The start is clever. There's a primal fear rising as you read due to the visuals (the walkies-talkie cans are stellar), as is the sense of dread you get from Billy.

Reading on, the writer offers us the two children's sorrow, as well as their dread. You cannot help but feel for them. You want someone to save them, but that may not be possible.

The scene where the two children see the men carrying guns come bursting into their room takes your breath away. The writer does a great job of allowing you to share Billy and Emily's fear, especially when the men near one of the closets (Billy and Emily are hiding in opposite closets and you are left to wonder who the men will find first).

There is a great build-up of anxiousness, not just for the characters but for the reader, as well!

I think my heart dropped into my shoe at the end, and I realized I had been holding my breath.

This was absolutely stellar and well deserving of a Cryptic's Choice badge!
