Forget Me Not

Diana hummed as she picked the flowers, blue forget-me-nots, which grew in abundance in her little garden. She loved them and often compared herself to them, she was a wallflower as much as the forget-me-nots were; just as they were overlooked in favour of the vibrant roses and lilies, she was often relegated to the background. And just like the flower suddenly comes into its own, so had her love story.

She could not remember when and how she fell in love with Adam, but love him she did; through their childhood days, adolescent years and early adulthood. She had loved him when he had come for the holidays, from the university, with his girlfriend. She could see the love they shared, and though it pained her, she did not stop loving him. She had loved him while he loved another, had loved him when he announced their engagement, loved him when his fiancé had walked out on him, leaving him heartbroken.

Adam had always considered her his friend, and she continued to be one, staying by his side and hearing him rant as to why Liliana had left him. It hurt her, but then if the only way she could be with him was to offer him a willing ear and a gentle shoulder, she would do it. As they spent time together, his comfort with her deepened.

Their first kiss was accidental, but she carried the memory of it for days, till the second kiss wiped it away. It was heated and magical, one that spoke of love and desire. Each successive kiss was a seductive whisper of promises and dreams. And when he finally confessed to loving her, she had simply stared at him in disbelief.

She had loved him for so long; twenty years in silence and desperation, two years in agony and pain, three years in sorrow and despair and when she heard that he loved her too, all she could do was to stare at his eyes, blue eyes that twinkled with amusement and love.

Diana breathed in the fragrance of the flowers and smiled as she thought, 'love works in mysterious ways, though it needs action and patience.'

The sapphires on her engagement ring glinted in the afternoon sun. In a week, she would be wed to the man she had loved all her life and who now loved her back.
