chapter x: dancing
This evening, the king is more dressed up than normal. While his appearance usually looks nice, Yoongi notes that extra care seems to have been put into it than normal. His dark outfit is trimmed with silver and the fabric looks as though it's made from the starry night sky. Even his wings seem to be brushed and clean, shining brightly in the light. Gone is the exhausted boy, replaced with a cheerful, energetic smile.
However, this is soon gone as boredom takes its place. It's clear Jungkook is trying to hide it, and he's doing a decent job at it, but even Yoongi can see the hopeful expectance and tired boredom that rests in his expression and posture. After the ball started, it became abundantly evident that no one had the confidence to approach the raven king, waiting up at the throne, and he wasn't going to go down and ask someone. Everyone has stayed where they are, chattering quietly and casting longing glances up at the expectant boy. The musicians continue to play, providing some background noise to stop the room from being taken by awkward silence.
After about two songs and countless minutes waiting, Yoongi has enough. With a soft sigh, he leaves Seokjin's side ― who had been twittering on about a topic the assassin cared little for ― and walks up to the throne. Jungkook's face lights up at the sight of him but the magpie thinks, at this point, he might have reacted this way to anyone. Nonetheless, Yoongi returns the smile as he gives a slightly exaggerated bow, hand outstretched.
"May I have this dance, Your Highness?" Yoongi asks, feeling all eyes on him now. They're all waiting, wanting to see whether he's rejected or not. A soft hand ― understandable for someone who's never done even a minute of hard work ― slides into his hand and Jungkook gets up from his seat.
"It would be my pleasure, Princess Yoongi." The pair make their way out to the wide space that had been designated for the dancing, previously left a pointless empty space. Now it's a slightly less pointless but still pretty empty space with only one couple standing in the centre. Yoongi notes that the younger male assumes the typically male position as he places his hand on the assassin's waist; the older doesn't raise any complaints as he falls into the complementary one.
"You look nice this evening." Yoongi says as they begin moving. This simple compliment (although it's more of a statement of facts than anything) causes the raven king's smile to increase, so until it's bringing a crinkle to his nose and eyes. Up close, the older can still see the dark shadows that rest beneath the boy's eyes, except now there's been an effort to hide them with some sparkly sort of paint. It furthers the starry theme the boy seems to have going.
"Thank you. You also look nice. I like the coat." As Jungkook says this, he runs his hand up the back of the fabric. It's a soft fabric, one that cost most of what Shinhye had left with. However, the assassin can't say it wasn't worth the money and he'll definitely find a reason to wear it again.
There's a moment where conversation ceases. Both are focused on dancing without stepping on their partner's feet and just enjoying themselves. Suddenly, in the spur of the moment, Yoongi twirls Jungkook in his arms. The younger lets out a surprised laugh, loosening up a little more. Even Yoongi relaxes, forgetting that they still have an audience. He chuckles along with the boy.
"Your birthday's growing near." Yoongi notes as they spin around, grabbing for any conversation topic. However, he immediately regrets it, as it reminds him of his job. Not only is the boy's birthday approaching, the end date of this suitor search is also drawing near. The assassin will have to try to kill the younger again tonight. As he looks at Jungkook and at his smiling face, he can't deny the regret he feels.
"Yeah, soon the kingdom will all be mine." Despite his smile, a hint of reluctance seems to be tainting the edge. Yoongi decides a change of subject might be better.
"You're a good dancer."
"Years of being forced to take lessons will do that. You're pretty good too."
"Mum loved dancing." Yoongi lies and for once it leaves a bad taste in his mouth. He doesn't even know what his mother liked. "She taught me herself."
"She must have been nice." The older male just gives a smile, not wanting to talk about a woman he barely knows anymore. In the background, the song ends and the musicians start a new one, but the couple continues to dance. As the conversation continues to change, the same light-heartedness takes the pair again. They laugh and smile at each other and, from where Seokjin is standing, all he can see is some form of adoration in both of them.
"If Jungkook doesn't marry him," The peacock says after watching the couple dance, "I might just have to start a riot."
"Don't you want him to marry you?" Jimin asks, clearly confused.
"No, not really. We've been friends for years, it'd be weird." The sea bird smiles to himself, barely even trying to hide it. However, when Seokjin's attention turns to him, he does his best to bite it back. "Wanna dance?"
"Me?"
"No, I was asking the guy behind you. C'mon." Seokjin laughs, grabbing Jimin by his significantly smaller hand, and drags him out onto the floor. They're the only other couple, other than Yoongi and Jungkook. This couple quickly fall into the position naturally, beginning dancing with an ease that suggests practise. "It's been a while since we danced together."
"You've been busy with the king." Jimin can't help the way bitterness enters his tone, a small pout taking his lips. "We haven't had time to dance."
"Aw, don't be like that, Jiminie. You know I dislike it as much as you." Jimin isn't sure he knows, but he keeps his mouth shut all the same. He doesn't want to ruin an otherwise pleasant dance. Instead he just nods, giving the older male a small smile. This brings Seokjin's own smile back, which is wide and fills the younger's chest with warmth. To the point where it even hurts a little.
Other couples seem to be pairing up now, joining the two that started it and broke the tension. While they might not be dancing with the king ― his attention seems to be completely taken by the assassin in his arms ― they all still manage to enjoy themselves. Even Yoongi is enjoying himself; not only would the uncle not be able to identify himself as the assassin, he himself seems to have forgotten.
In hindsight, he might decide this is a sign of weakness, but right now this doesn't even occur to him. That sort of thing doesn't even matter.
