Chapter Twenty-Five
Finn is the first one of us to snap out of our confusion, walking across the room to throw open the door. Delaney is standing there, eyes flicking between us and the hall way.
"You did all of this?" Finn says in greeting of the other man.
Delaney gives a swift nod of his head before gesturing for us to follow him. We each grab one of our packs, and I call Harry's name, the dog quickly coming to my side.
"We have to be quick. The beasts will be here any minute."
"The guards, they should slow them down at least a little bit."
Delaney shakes his head at my words, walking over to the stairs. "Nope. Slipped something in their water to slow them down a bit. The beasts should be able to take them out easily enough."
It is easy to hear the sounds of people in the hospital panicking, some doing the same as us and choosing to leave. Others, though, remain glued to the windows watching the scene below. We are just passing a familiar floor, when I grab Delaney's arm, making the man look up at me in confusion and irritation.
"Alena's on this floor."
He shakes his head, moving to start walking down the stairs again. "We don't have time. We have to go."
My hand tightens on his arm, making him look up at me sharply. "She's saved my life. I can't just leave her here."
He opens his mouth to argue, but Finn just shakes his head, already walking over to the door that leads to the floor. "I really wouldn't argue with him. He has an inherent need to save people."
A smile blossoms on my face at his words and I immediately follow after him. Delaney grumbles behind us but follows along anyways. I guess if he has already put in this much effort to get us out here, he isn't going to give up now.
Alena is already running around when we enter the floor, a look of relief coming over her face when she sees me. "Alden, thank god. Did you see what's going on out there? The beasts are going to actually make it inside this time."
Nodding my head, I follow behind her as she rushes into Margaret's room. "Yes, that's why we are getting out of here. Delaney knows the way. But we have to leave now."
She pauses for a moment her mouth slightly open in shock, before she snaps out of it and starts moving again. "I can't just leave my patients."
"Then bring them with!" Delaney yells, his voice filled with aggravation. He quickly makes his way over to the window in the room, a loud string of curses when he sees what is happening below. "We need to leave now. The beasts will reach the building in only a matter of minutes."
"It's alright, sweetheart," Margaret says, giving Alena a small smile. "You don't have to worry about me."
"Margaret..." Alena starts, looking at her in wide eyes.
"I can't survive out there anyways," the other woman says, grabbing Alena's hand and giving it a squeeze. "Not with my bad lungs."
"No."
That one word causes everyone in the room to freeze, eyes sliding over to the woman in the corner of the room. In the entire time I have been here, I have never heard Mary actually talk. Finn even looks surprised, and he has been around her the most. She doesn't say anything else, her one word getting her point across.
A loud boom can be heard outside, before the lights flicker and eventually go out. Delaney is the first to break the silence with a loudly exclaimed, "shit!" he looks back over at us, tearing his gaze from the window. "The beasts got the generators."
"We need to get out of here," I murmur, pulling Viola closer to me. The clicks of the beasts are becoming audible, and that sends a tendril of fear through me. They are too close if I can hear them.
"That's what I have been saying!" Delaney says, giving an exasperated shake of his head.
"Alden," Alena calls, grabbing my attention. "Get the wheelchair."
Nodding my head, I run out of the room, grabbing the wheelchair we keep in the supply closet and carrying it back. Alena takes it from me, unfolding it with ease. The intercom is crackling on, just as we get Margaret situated, a few tanks of oxygen strapped to the back while we fit a mask over her face.
"All fertiles are to report to the first floor laboratory," the face over the intercom says, repeating the phrase two more times before cutting off.
"They must realize that this is more serious than they can handle," Finn says.
"Come on, we have to move," Delaney says, walking out of the room.
We all follow behind him, but it is terrifying out here. There are no windows in the hallways or stairwells, making it nearly impossible to see. And the screams are just starting up, the sounds traveling up the stairwell.
"Shit," Delaney mumbles. "They've made it inside." He pauses in his descent, looking up at the floor sigh on the wall. "The first floor is compromised, we're going to have to take the back way, come on."
None of us question him, just try to stay quiet as we exit onto the third floor. People are running around frantically, not even bothering to notice as we weave in between the running bodies. The clicks and screeches from the monsters are getting closer, and Viola cries out in fear against my chest.
It's hard to soothe her and run at the same time. She snuffles against me, her tiny hands clutching onto the fabric of my shirt. Looking over at Finn, I see that Remy isn't doing too much better. He is silent, at least, but his face is buried in Finn's neck, obviously scared with what is going on.
Delaney stops at the end of a deserted hallways, pulling out a pair of keys before fidgeting with the door he stopped in front of. New screams start up from the center of the floor, and I know the beasts must have made it up. Finn grabs my hand and I hold on tightly. This is one of the first times where I am truly terrified of not making it out. All the other times we encountered the beasts, there was a clear path of escape. Now, we are putting all of our faith in Delaney, who swings open the door to a supply closet.
"What the hell is this?" I hiss, trying to keep quiet but my anger is blooming. "Are we just supposed to hide in here until the beasts go away, because let me tell you, that doesn't work. They just sniff you out and break down the door."
Delaney gives me a deadpan look, before motioning us all to get inside. Finn has to drag me in, closing the door once everyone is inside the tiny closet.
"This place is old, the oldest hospital in the state. And with old hospitals comes secret tunnels. Doctors had to have a way to move around their not so legal doings." His hands run along a bookshelf before pushing it to the side. Behind it is a wooden hatch, just big enough for a body.
The wooden door opens with a creaking sound, to reveal a wooden plank on some sort of track. There are even straps on the side, to hold something down. But the chute inside the hatch is completely dark, and with the sounds of terror surrounding us, it makes it seem even more ominous.
"This leads to the mortuary, which is connected to the garage. We can get out that way." He pulls up a stool making it easier to step inside the shoot. "Finn, you go down first, that way you can keep guard while everyone else makes their way down."
Finn gives a single nod of his head before setting Remy down. The little boy starts to cry, trying to cling to Finn, but I grab his hand.
"We'll be right behind him," I soothe, and Remy wraps his arms around my leg, trembling in fear.
Finn has to take off his pack in order to fit, but gets onto the plank without complaint. Delaney grabs onto a rope that had been hanging on the side, bracing one leg on the wall before carefully lowering Finn down the chute.
The screams outside are getting louder, and I grip onto Remy and Viola a little tighter. Alena walks over to the door, pushing a shelf in front of it. It is not much, but it is something.
"Alright, he made it to the bottom," Delaney says, quickly pulling the plank back up. "Let's send the packs down next."
Those are easier than lowering a person, so they only take a little over a minute, and it is a relief to be free of the weight of my pack. Alena stays by the door the entire time, ear pressed against the wood. Her eyes are wide in fear as she meets mine.
"Margaret next," Delaney says, hands quickly moving on the rope. Margaret is wobbly when she stands up, and has to take off her mask in order to lay on the plank. Delaney is more careful as he lowers her down, sending the wheelchair and oxygen tanks down after her.
The screams are definitely getting louder, and people are starting to run down this hallway, the creatures following behind. Doors are opening and slamming shut as people try a last ditch effort to hide.
Remy cries when I lay him on the plank, big crocodile tears rolling down his cheeks. I press a kiss against his forehead while strapping him in before giving Delaney the go ahead. The man is quicker with the ropes, obviously hearing what is going on outside this closet.
The doorknob starts rattling, someone banging on the door frantically. A flashback of when I first met Finn comes to my mind, and the guilt I felt then is just as heavy as the guilt I feel now.
"Alden, you next," Delaney says, and I pry my eyes away from the vibrating door.
Viola clings to me as I lay on the board, and it is terrifying being lowered into a black nothingness. The screams become distant, and only a minute later, a light appears. The plank lurches to a stop and hands unstrap me before pulling me up into a strong chest.
Finn's hands run all along me, feeling for injury as he presses kisses against my face. He doesn't have to say anything. I know he was worried.
Mary is lowered down next and Alena follows close behind, Harry in her arms. She looks more frazzled, though, when we pull her up.
"They were trying to break down the door," she murmurs.
A loud whirring sound catches our attention, and turning, we watch as the ropes in the hatch move faster than ever. A panting Delaney comes flying off the plank, slamming the hatch door shut before pushing a table in front of it.
"They made it inside," he says, before giving his head a hard shake. "We're almost there, this way."
He seems to know exactly where he is going as we run down the dark hallways, seeming to make random turns. Everything is dark too, the only light coming from a flashlight Finn must have fished out of one of our packs.
Delaney stops in front of two large metal doors, pushing them open. The coldness hits me all at once, confirming my suspicions of our location. We are in the basement garage, the one usually reserved for employees.
There are only a few cars, but what catches my attention is the bus that sits near the ramp that leads to the outside. Danny is pacing in front of it, obviously waiting for us. He looks up when he hears out footsteps, letting out something that sounds suspiciously like 'fucking finally' before running towards the driver's.
The bus is small, like one of those ones that has the comfortable seats. But climbing inside, I see that it is completely different than I was expecting. Most of the chairs are gone, and soft rugs are placed on the ground. There are boxes of supplies, along with mattresses, stacked in the back.
It only takes a minute for all of us to climb inside before Danny pulls the door closed, locking it in place. He turns the keys, making the engine come to life.
It is only when we start moving that I realize that someone is missing.
"Wait, where's Jacob?"
Danny flinches slightly at the question but doesn't look surprised. "Decided to stay behind. Thought it was safer in here."
"I'm sorry," I murmur, and Danny just shakes his head.
"He always was a stubborn ass."
He doesn't say anything else after that, and I take the not so subtle hint. Going up the ramp is like climbing towards freedom. The light of the afternoon greets us as we leave the parking garage and pull onto a nearly empty street.
There is a silence in the air as the hospital falls further behind us, the old road leading us farther away from our prison.
And for the first time, I feel as if I can finally take a breath without the fear of not ever pulling in another one.
