Chapter Twenty

"Alden," someone says, lips pressing against my shoulder. "Time to wake up."

Grumbling, I roll away from Finn, who lets out a familiar chuckle. He presses up against my back, pressing another kiss against my shoulder, before slowly trailing them up to my neck.

Heat spreads through me, settling in my already hard cock. Finn lets out a satisfied hum when I shift back against him, his hand trailing down my side while his kisses become sloppier.

Not able to resist, I turn around in his arms, his hand moving to settle on my ass as he finally presses his lips against mine. The kiss becomes heated quick, Finn's tongue teasing my bottom lip.

We both like to sleep in just underwear, so it makes it impossible not to feel Finn's erection pressing against mine as our legs tangle together.

Just when my hand finds its way to the hem of his briefs, a small cry fills the air. Both of us still, hoping that Viola will go back to sleep, but the baby has made up her mind, determining that we will not be permitted to have any fun.

She snuffles some more, and I know that she is going to let out a full blown cry in just a few seconds if one of us doesn't pick her up.

"I got her," I mumble, giving Finn one last kiss before pushing the blankets away and sliding out of bed. My erection died the moment Viola started to fuss, so at least I don't have to worry about that.

Viola gives me a smile when I reach inside her crib, her arms waving around in excitement. Her smile always makes my heart swell, especially since she is always so happy when she does it.

"Hi baby," I say, picking her up. She coos as I rest her against my chest, face rubbing against me as she is still waking up.

Turning around, I see that Finn is already up out of bed, a bottle heating in the nifty little bottle warmer that Alena had brought us. Apparently, they had confiscated all of our formula, not wanting Viola to have something 'subpar'. I had just rolled my eyes when Alena had told me but didn't argue when she handed me a small box full of plastic bags with breast milk inside.

When I asked her where she got it, she had said that there was some stashed in the hospital for preemies, but since they haven't had any babies here since the outbreak, the milk has been sitting in the freezer.

Viola doesn't seem to care too much about the switch, and that's all that matters. The warmer lets out a small beep when it is done heating, and Finn tests the milk while I change Viola's diaper and put a fresh onesie and little socks on her.

"We have fifteen minutes until we have to be down for breakfast," Finn says, handing me the bottle while I get settled on the bed.

"Alright," I say, pulling up the comforter so that Viola and I are protected against the somewhat cold air. It is definitely warmer inside than it is out, especially since the rain has continued throughout the night, but it is still colder than I would like. "Well, that should be plenty of time for Viola to finish her bottle."

Viola lets out a small grunt when I say her name, her dark brows scrunching. Chuckling, I run my finger over those scrunched brows, and she relaxes again, her eyes drooping in contentment.

She has definitely started to look more like a person since she has passed the two-month mark, almost three. Her lighter colored hair fell out and is now coming in much darker, while her eyes are still the newborn blue.

As soon as she finishes the bottle, Finn takes her from me, letting me get dressed in the last few minutes we have before we have to be in the cafeteria. We had learned last night what happens if you're late. They bar you from the room, not letting you in no matter how hungry you are. A woman had been only seconds late last night, but they had still shut the door in her face, ignoring her pleas for food.

It's more than obvious that they control everything we do here, but since we have only been here one night, we don't know to what extent.

Once I am dressed, we make our way out of the room, just as another person is doing the same from the room right in front of ours. He doesn't say anything to us, his mouth set in a hard scowl when he notices how closely Finn and I are standing together. He just lets out an aggravated huff, mumbling something about fags.

Finn looks like he wants to do something to the man, so I wrap my arm around his waist, pulling him in the direction of the stairs.

The bell is just starting to toll when we reach the cafeteria, the doors closing behind us. Delaney and the brothers are already there, sitting at the table nearest the window.

Finn and I grab our food from the small window that connects the kitchen and the cafeteria. A frail woman gives us a wide smile as she hands us our food. We thank her, allowing her to coo goodbye to Viola before walking back over to join the others at the table.

"The results come today," Delaney says, taking a bite of the mush on his plate. Looks like some type of oatmeal along with a piece of dense bread makes up our breakfast today.

"That sounds ominous," I say, holding back my disgust as I eat the tasteless gruel.

"Hm, see it as you will," Delaney says.

The subject changes after that, Danny and Jacob talking about their room and their loud, arguing neighbors. Apparently, they had gotten little to no sleep because the couple had been yelling all night. Some guards had eventually come and they had quieted down after that, but that only left the brothers with a few hours of sleep before they had to wake up for breakfast.

Another bell tolls, telling us that breakfast is now over. The doors are opened by the guards standing next to them, allowing people to shuffle out of the room. Before we have a chance to leave, Alena and Murphey enter the room, both holding manila folders.

The brothers follow Murphey as he gestures for them to sit at a table across the room from us, Jacob calling him a few choice words while Danny chastises him, barely holding back a laugh.

"Good luck," Delaney says, leaving us as Alena sits down at the table.

"Results are in," she says, a soft smile on her face. "It appears that you-" she looks over at Finn "- are a fertile, while you-" she looks over at me, "- are a helper."

"What does this mean for us?" I say, leaning a little harder against Finn.

Alena lets out a resigned sigh, looking as if she has to force herself to speak. "It means that Finn is going to come with me so that we can run some more tests, while Alden, you will go down to the second-floor reception desk, where they will tell you your assigned position of help."

"What are you going to do to him?" I ask, my hand moving to Finn's leg, trying to hold onto him as best I can. "What kind of tests?"

"Compatibility, mostly," she says, opening the file that has Finn's name on it and reading over one of the documents inside. "We will run another blood test, as well as a fertility exam. After all of that, he will be matched with someone we feel he has the best chance of creating a healthy fetus."

My hand tightens around his leg, and I can feel that Finn is just as tense beside me.

"What about Alden?" Finn asks. "They aren't going to force him to do anything dangerous, will they?"

The soft smile returns to Alena's face and she gives me a reassuring look. "Seeing as you have a background in nursing, you will most likely be working as an assistant to one of our nurses, so it shouldn't be too grueling. This way, you'll also get to keep Viola with you."

Neither of us says anything else, leaving us in silence. It is soon broken by a beeping sound, which makes Alena look down at her waist.

"Ah, looks like someone is paging me," she says, standing up from the table. "I'll be right back."

She leaves us alone, walking over to a telephone fixed to the wall, dialing the number that appeared on her pager.

"This isn't right," I say, and I know that Delaney warned us, but I had been secretly hoping that neither of us would be fertiles. "They can't force you to have a baby with someone."

"I have a feeling that if we don't cooperate, they aren't opposed to using more unethical methods to 'encourage' us," Finn grumbles. "Makes sense as to why Delaney tried to escape this place."

"Maybe we can get out of here?" I say, already subtly looking around the room.

Finn shakes his head again. "No, they'll come after us, just like they did with Delaney since I am a fertile." He pauses for a minute, causing me to look over at him. He is watching me with intense eyes, and I have a feeling that I am not going to like what he is going to say next. "But you and Viola could leave this place. Make it to your family home down in California."

"What the hell?" I say, watching as his brows scrunch in confusion. My hands find their way up to his face, cupping his cheeks. Leaning forward, I press a hard kiss against his lips, which he eagerly responds to. "We are not leaving you here, Finn. We get through these things together."

He looks like he is about to protest, but I cut him off with another kiss. "Together."

He lets out a long sigh before finally nodding his head, and I lay my head on his shoulder, not wanting to be away from him right now. They are going to take him away, force him to do something that he doesn't want to, and I can't do anything about it.

Alena comes back over to the table, a surprised but happy look on her face. "Apparently, there was someone outside the hospital, protesting you guys being taken, so they brought him in."

The doors to the cafeteria open, and in comes Harry, running at top speed.

"Harry!" Finn and I both exclaim as the pup quickly closes the distance between us. Finn picks him up, hugging him close as the puppy bathes his face in kisses. We had both been worried about him out there, not knowing if he would be able to handle it, but it looks like he is tougher than we thought.

"I'll let you guys have a few minutes," Alena says, collecting her files. "But we have to go in five minutes."

Finn nods his head and I give her a grateful smile. "Thank you."

A sad smile comes across her face and she nods her head, before walking over to Murphey and slapping him on the back of the head for something he said. Jacob looks at her in awe, but Alena just ignores him, too busy arguing with her coworker.

"We're all together now," Finn says, scratching Harry behind his ears, making the puppy's eyes droop.

"Let's keep it that way."
