Chapter Thirteen

The screeches are getting louder, along with the screams of the townspeople. Peeking out the window, I notice two of the beasts heading strait towards the bed and breakfast. They don't seem to notice us up here on the second level, though, intent on just getting into the building first.

A gunshot rings out, making me snap out of my daze, and I press myself closer to Finn, wanting the comfort. Viola lets out a wailing cry from the startling noise and I try to shush her, but she is refusing to be calmed.

"I think we are going to have to go out the window," Finn says, moving me behind him before opening the window.

The creatures are too distracted to notice us, and luckily the car is only about fifteen feet away from the building. Finn sticks his head out the window before letting out a pleased sound.

"Mrs. Logan has a flower trellis just a foot to the right of us," he says, before maneuvering himself out the window. Quickly, he makes his way down the trellis, reaching the ground in about ten seconds. He looks back up at me with wide eyes, motioning for me come down.

"Hold on," I mouth, before reaching down and picking up one of our bags. Finn looks surprised when I shove it out the window, but catches it anyways. He motions for me to come down again, but I just shove another bag out the window. It isn't until all three of our bags are down there that I pick up Harry.

"Ready?" I quietly ask, and Finn nods his head, body tense as he watches me hold a squirming Harry out the window. The puppy lets out a small yip when I drop him, but Finn make sure to catch him, bringing Harry against his chest and letting the puppy lick him in delight.

A scream rings the house, making me stop in my tracks and look over my shoulder. It seems that the beasts have made their way inside. Their familiar clicking is still coming from downstairs, though. Not wanting them to be able to get inside the room, I move away from the window in order to push the dresser in front of the door, trying to give myself as much time as possible. Because heights aren't my thing, and once again I am going to have to face my fear in order to survive another day.

Gunshots shake the air, and the screeching becomes louder. But it only sounds like it is coming from one beast this time instead of two. Somebody managed to kill one of the beasts, and it seems like the other one isn't too happy about that.

"Alden, come down!" Finn says from down below. Looking around the room one more time, I make sure we have everything. Viola's screams remind me that she is still held against my chest, so it is impossible to accidentally forget her.

"Alright," I whisper. Refusing to look down at the ground, I slowly maneuver myself out the window. It is a difficult task to do with only one hand since my other one is busy making sure that Viola is pressed against my chest.

"You're alright," Finn assures me, moving so that he is standing directly below the trellis. He holds it steady so it doesn't swing at all, and I am infinitely grateful. "You're doing great."

I am only about halfway down when the sound of wood snapping catches my attention. The creature must be in the room by now. My hands tighten on the metal of the trellis before I force myself to talk.

"Finn, catch Viola, we don't have much time." By now, there is only about eight feet separating us, so I feel confident that he won't let her fall.

"Okay," Finn says, once in his life not arguing with me. Giving Viola one last squeeze in order to reassure myself that she will be okay, I push myself as far away from the trellis as I can without letting go in order to drop her into Finn's waiting arms. Unfortunately, without Finn holding onto the trellis anymore, the movement causes the piece of metal to slowly fall away from the house.

"Shit," I whimper, closing my eyes so I don't have to face my impending impact.

Something catches me though before I can hit the ground, and I let out a shaky breath of relief.

"Oh my God, Finn, thank-" my words are cut off when I open my eyes and I realize that it wasn't Finn who caught me, but the man from before. The man that I had met at the park and had turned down when he asked me out.

Awkward.

"You're not Finn," I say, quite intelligently.

The guy just smiles at me while setting me down, and a very familiar voice comes from right behind me. "No, he's not." Finn wraps his hand around my waist, pulling me further away from the guy I had met at the park.

What was his name again? Jason... Jared... Jacob. That's right, his name is Jacob.

"Alden, right?" he asks, giving me a charming smile. "Townsfolk have been talking about the two of you ever since you got here, so it didn't take me long to learn your name." He looks over at Finn. "so, you must be the friend."

"Finn," the man behind me says, his jaw tense in agitation.

Viola lets out a loud cry, snapping me back into the reality of being chased by the monsters. "And this is Viola," I say motioning the screaming infant who Finn hands back over to me before crouching down to pick up one of the bags. "Now, it's time to go before one of the creatures notices us."

Finn nods his head before picking up the other two bags and jogging to the car, unlocking it with the key fob. He has it running by the time we make it to the vehicle, and I quickly get in, while the others follow suit. My door is kept open until Harry is able to make it over as well before I pick him up as well and close the door.

"Let's get out of here," I saw, and Finn lets out a confirming grunt.

"Real talkative this one," Jacob says from the back.

"Jacob, shut the hell up before they throw us out," comes another voice. My head whips around, and I am met with the sight of a guy a few years younger than us.

"Who the hell are you?" I ask, my eyebrows scrunched in confusion.

The boy sticks his hand out for me to shake. "Danny Nelson."

"My little brother," Jacob clarifies before sitting back in the seat. "Now can we start driving now or are we just going to wait for one of the monsters to notice us?"

"Jacob, what the hell?" Danny hisses.

Finn just glares in the rearview mirror before backing out of the spot the car was parked in and making his way onto the main street. People are running around, some lying on the ground, but just as many monsters dead.

It feels like we are back to where we first started: leaving the science building. There are separate people running around, some getting in their own cars but most left without much to defend themselves. There are still quite a few beasts left, and they only seem to go down when someone shoots them in the head.

Crouching down slightly, I am able to see the few men and women who are standing from windows, shooting any beasts they see. But there isn't much hope left for this town, and that thought makes me hold Viola closer to me. My hand twitches with the want to put it over the console and twine my fingers with Finn's, but I know the action would be unwanted, so I hold myself back.

It seems like it takes forever to make it out of the town, but we finally do. Everyone in the car is silent, including Viola, who is happily sucking on a pacifier. The silence is almost deafening, but there is nothing for anyone to say. Today we faced another tragedy, and I have a feeling that it won't be the last one.

"Where to now?" I ask, looking over at Finn.

Before Finn has a chance to answer, Jacob speaks up from the back. "I heard of a place to the east that is taking people in. Apparently, they have enough food and supplies for everyone and they are able to keep the creatures back.

"We heard of that place," Finn says, his hands tight on the wheel. "And it sounds too good to be true."

Nodding my head, I look at the people in the back seat. "And you know what they say about that. If it seems too good to be true then it probably is."

Danny nods his head. "Makes sense to me."

Jacob looks like he is about to argue but just deflates against the seat instead. "Then where in the hell are we supposed to go?

Finn shrugs his shoulders. "I have no idea. There doesn't really seem to be any safe place."

"Maybe we can just go out to the countryside, where there are fewer people, and hopefully fewer creatures." Finn looks over at me, seeming to contemplate my words.

"Makes sense," he says, turning back so that his eyes are on the road. "The monsters won't go where there is no food."

"So, we are just going to drive around the countryside?" Jacob asks. "What happens when we run out of gas or food?"

"We will have to figure that out when it happens," Finn responds, his body tensing up again.

He really does not like Jacob, and I have to admit that the guy is kind of annoying, but Finn just seemed to hate him on sight.

"It isn't like we can really plan for something like this," Danny says from the backseat. "Because I guarantee that no matter what we plan, something will come along and ruin it."

"Makes sense, I guess," Jacob says reluctantly. "Nobody believed the creatures would make it out to us so quickly, but they did. Everyone refused to take any precautions no matter what we said."

Some of Finn's anger drops away at Jacob's words. "Yeah, nobody would listen to me either. It was almost like they were living in a fantasy."

"Nobody wants to believe reality when it is so harsh," I say, causing both of them to look over at me. I shrug my shoulders. "It's the truth."

Everyone is silent after that, just staring out the windows and watching as the world goes by. So many things have changed already, and I don't even know how long it has been since this whole thing started, time being hard to keep track of in this world.

But we escaped the last few disasters, so I just hope we can continue to do the same for the upcoming ones, as well.
