Chapter Seven

A loud scream coming from inside the hospital causes me to whip my head over in the direction of the building, making my already dizzy head become even more so. Everything is quiet for all of ten seconds before the familiar screeches and clicking sounds start up, faint since they are coming from inside the building.

Still, my heart pounds. Finn is still in there, and those beasts will probably be out here in a matter of minutes, taking me and the baby as well. I knew we shouldn't have come here, but Finn is one of the most stubborn people I have ever met, and he wouldn't take no for an answer.

Now look at where that got us.

Another scream comes from inside the building, this time louder than the one before, snapping me somewhat out of my fever haze. Enough so that I can start moving again.

Looking back down at the baby, I see that it is still crying, its small hands flailing around in distress.

"You're not the only one who is scared," I whisper.

Knowing that I do not have much time, my hand slides away from the window and down to the handle, fumbling slightly before getting a good grip. It takes me a few tries of trying to open the door to figure out that it is locked.

"Dammit."

Bracing myself on the car, I turn myself around, trying to find anything that is heavy enough to break the car window. My eyes are becoming heavier, feeling as if they weigh a hundred pounds. Shaking my head, I force myself to focus.

Finally, my eyes land on an overturned motorcycle, the rider laying less than ten feet away from me. It's the person's helmet that catches my eye: bright red and looking heavy. Heavy enough to break this window.

But the person is laying in the middle of the street, meaning that I will have nothing to lean against to keep me upright.

The screams from inside, along with the screeches of the creatures, are becoming louder, encouraging the baby to cry even more.

Taking a deep breath, I push myself up off the car with trembling arms, my eyes focused on the rider. Everything is becoming louder, but I tune the sounds out, focusing on making it to the helmet I desperately need.

"Alden!" a familiar voice calls from the distance, but I ignore it, pushing myself further.

Surprisingly, I make it to the rider without falling down, despite my trembling legs. Bending down, I grab a hold of the helmet, yanking it off easily enough. Seems like they didn't have their chin strap on.

How unsafe.

With a satisfied grin, I stand up, prize in hand. Turning around, though, makes the grin slip from my face. Finn and others are running out of the hospital, the screeches coming from directly behind them.

Finn, though, is running straight towards me, a disapproving frown on his face and a bag in his hand. Looks like he lost his baseball bat in there.

Shaking my head, I force myself to focus again, tuning out the approaching screeches. Once I reach the reach the car, I promptly raise the helmet, allowing it to fall against the passenger side window. It takes a few hits from the helmet, but the window finally breaks, the shattering glass barely audible with the screams of both people and the creatures.

"Alden, what the hell are you doing?" Finn says, weaving in between the cars as he runs towards me. "Why aren't you in the damn car?"

"Baby," I heave, dropping the helmet before reaching inside and unlocking the back door.

"I really don't think we have known each other long enough to be calling each other that," Finn says, stopping beside me.

"No, not you." The lock clicks open and I stumble as quickly as I can towards the handle of the door. Grabbing on, I pull the door open, waving my hand in an elaborate gesture towards the crying infant. "Baby."

"Oh, Jesus, you found someone to save." Finn looks up to the sky, mumbling something under his breath, so low that I can't catch it.

"I couldn't just leave it," I say, bending down to grab the diaper bag placed on the ground. "So we are taking the baby with us."

"Alden-" He is cut off by an earsplitting screech, much louder than before. Both of us look over towards the front entrance of the hospital, where three of the most hideous things I have ever seen are standing.

Their skin is a sickly green, and their bodies twitch every few seconds as if they do not have complete control over themselves. From this far away, all I can see it that they look strong, not like something that is diseased.

"Come on, we have to get out of here," Finn says, his voice low and laced with fear. "I'll grab the baby."

Finn leans down, unlatching the car seat from the base that is strapped to the seat. The baby's cries quiet down some, most likely from exhaustion, but I don't have time to dwell on it even further. Stepping towards me, Finn wraps his hand around my waist, helping me to walk.

It seems like it takes us forever to finally reach the car, me stumbling along, and Finn trying to stay upright while holding a baby carrier in one hand and balancing me with the other.

People run past us in their effort to get away from the monsters, and my heart pounds, hoping that we make it to the car in time. The creatures are clicking again, seeming to communicate with each other as they stalk down the front steps of the hospital. Their eyes scan over the parking lot, trying to find their next victim.

One of them, the smallest one, looks over in our direction. It makes another series of clicks before starting in our direction, stalking towards us like a lion does with its prey.

"Finn..." I say, my voice coming out stuttered. "We need to move faster."

He doesn't even question me, just starts walking quicker than before, practically dragging me behind him. Opening the back door, he sets me down before pushing me over and placing the baby in the seat.

The creature is moving faster, halfway to our car by now. The others seem to be concentrating on the other people who are trying to flee for their lives, but they don't concern me right now.

"Finn, hurry!"

Slamming my door shut, Finn runs to the driver side door, opening it and practically throwing himself in.

"Lock the doors, lock the doors!" I yell, my eyes not straying from the approaching monster.

The click of the locks is all the response I get before Finn turns the key. The engine revs to life, and I have never heard a more beautiful sound. Finn throws the car into drive, slipping past all the haphazard cars.

The monster is still running towards us, trying to catch up to our car. Finn doesn't let it, though, making the car move even faster once we are out of the parking lot.

The creature loses interest after we leave the parking lot, attention being drawn by another group of people trying to escape. It lets out a loud screech before starting in their direction. I turn away after that, not wanting to see what it will do to those people who have no chance of escaping.

Settling back into the seat, I look over at the baby, whose cries have died down and is now just letting out sad little whimpers. Exhausted from everything that has happened in the last twenty minutes, I let my eyes slide shut. Now that the adrenaline is starting to fade away, the aches and pains from the infection in my leg come roaring back.

Heaviness settles into my body, feeling as if lead is running through my veins rather than blood.

Finn doesn't say anything the entire ride, but I can practically feel the frustration radiating off of him. His frustration is understandable since I didn't stay in the car even when I said I would, but I couldn't leave a defenseless baby out to die. If there is one person who I can save during this entire mess, it will be a child who is too small to protect itself.

The car coming to a stop causes my eyes to flutter open. Looking around, I see that we are back at the house, the sun just starting to rise in the distance.

Finn opens his door, his keys in his hand while he slips out of the car. He comes over to my door, waiting for me to move my weight away from it in order to open the door without me falling out.

"Come on, let's get you inside." He wraps his arm around my waist and I wrap mine around his shoulders, allowing him to take most of my weight when I stand up. Together, we manage to get into the house.

Harry is waiting at the door for us, his excitement palpable. He is jumping around us as we walk, letting out excited yips to let us know that he is happy that we are home.

Finn deposits me on the couch before walking back out of the house again. Harry jumps up onto the couch, doing a few circles before finally settling down next to me.

Deciding that it would probably be a good idea to check on my cuts, I force myself to sit up. Finn walks into the house just as I am unwrapping my bandage and lets out a startled squawk.

"Alden, what the hell are you doing?" he says, closing the door behind him and locking it before rushing over to me.

He deposits the baby and the diaper bag next to the couch, pushing away my shaking hands as I try to unwind the bandage.

"Just hold on a second, Alden," he says, capturing my hands with his own when they move towards my injured knee again. "Let me take care of this. You will probably end up hurting yourself even further if you try."

With a defeated sigh, I collapse against the back of the couch, silently giving in to Finn's request. A pleased smile spreads across Finn's face as he sits down, reaching behind him for the First Aid Kit we left on the coffee table last night.

A hiss slips out of my mouth when Finn finally does pull the bandage away, revealing my wound in all of its disgusting glory. The skin surrounding the cut is a bright, flaring red, and pus is dried around the edges. Finn grabs a pair of plastic gloves, snapping them on.

Bending down, Finn gently presses at the wound, making fresh pus seep out of the cut.

"Definitely infected," he mumbles.

Using the large bottle of hydrogen peroxide, Finn carefully cleans out the wound, getting rid of all traces of the pus and dried blood. Once it is as clean as it can get, he covers it with a fresh bandage, pulling down my pants leg once he is done.

He reaches behind him, grabbing the bag he had been holding earlier and pulling out a bottle of pills. With meticulous fingers, he unscrews the cap and pushes the pill against my lips, sliding it into my mouth once I let him.

Taking the glass of water he is holding out to me, I drink the entire thing, feeling winded once it is empty.

Finn pulls himself back up onto the couch with a tired sigh, collapsing next to me. The baby lets out a small hiccup, drawing our attention.

Finn moves his eyes away from the baby and over to me, the exhaustion making the usual tawny brown a more muted color. "Just what have you gotten us into, Alden?"
