The wind howled loudly that night, a small boy, barely as tall as the top of some of the tree roots, ran through the foliage, panting heavily.
He stayed away for far too long, she could have been hurt, or been found by a badger or snake or wolf or by an adult or some monster!
He stayed out too long to look for food, he shouldn't have stayed out this long, night was falling which meant animals come out and-
The small boy didn't see where he was going, too caught up his swirling stream of thoughts to pay much attention to his surroundings. With a quick squeak, he let out a pain filled groan as he was suddenly tripped over by something.
The sound of something snapping made him look up with fear. Adrenaline pumped through his veins as he watched a log fall down to the ground.
All of a suddenly, the leaves he fell on snapped up, and for a moment, he thought it was a very delayed bear trap finally going off, but was more horrified as he found himself being carried up by a net.
The twine rubbed against him, his movements harder to make as it contoured to keep him inside it. He was too big to slip through the holes, and even if he could, he'd fall a good ways down.
With a weak voice, his throat sore and scratchy from previous nights of crying due to a starved belly and aching limbs, he tried to call out for help.
"Help! Rain! Somebody! Anybody!" He could barely get his voice to sound louder than a crackling whisper. His throat was raw and swollen, every noise he made made him feel as though he would start bleeding.
He coughed, hand covering his mouth. He flinched as more pain ripped through his throat, eyes growing wide as he saw speckles of blood peppered across his hand. Great, a new thing to worry about-- he actually was bleeding.
Scared at his two new problems, he sank down, arms wrapped around him a self hug, the wind beating down once again. He gave a sniffle, feeling a tear roll down his cheek.
He was only four! How did they expect him and his sister to survive if he could barely scavenge the forest or leaving it to him to play life or death with mystery berries or-
Snap
He let out a small gasp, hearing a twig break. The young boy heard a soft voice from below him, quiet and cautious, yet curious as he spoke.
"Hello?"
He tried to turn around in the net he was caught it, pushing and shoving leaves out of the way to see under him. Fighting back the pain in his raw, scratchy throat, he tried desperately to call out to whoever was there.
"Up he-" his voice gave out, the last few syllables caught in his throat.
From under him, a boy in an oversized brown shirt could be seen, a mop of brownish black hair on his head, pale skin contrasting it. He looked up, letting out a small gasp, before looking around. The young boy in the net watched as the other grabbed a sharp rock, turning to the tree the net was connected to, beginning to scale up it, digging his fingers into small groves in the bark as he went farther and farther up.
The boy watched him, looking up as the other carefully made his way to the rope, holding the rock between his teeth as he carefully walked along the branch, arms out to balance him.
The boy in the brown shirt took the rock from his mouth, beginning to swipe at the rope fibers with it.
"Almost got it! This might hurt a little," the other boy said. The boy in the net nodded, before letting out a loud yelp as he was sent plunging to the ground.
The net opened, freeing him as he laid on the ground, whincing and letting out a small groan of pain as his tummy ached from the hard belly flop to the ground and lack of food.
He slowly lifted his head, eyes closed tightly as he tried to ride out the pain that rippled through him with each heartbeat in his small chest.
Any other weakling would have cried, but he knew better. The woods were dangerous, and making noise would alert any creature to them with no problem.
The other boy came to him, stepping on the leaves and small twigs as he hurried to his side. "Are you okay?" He asked quickly.
The hurt boy could only nod, his throat too sore to speak. He looked up, getting a better look at the boy who had helped him.
His pale skin was covered in small scars and healing scabs. His hair was messy, but it seemed to be more of a natural thing than poor hygiene, the sides sticking upwards rather than down. The boy's dark blue eyes scanned a little bit lower, locking eyes with the other.
They were two different colors. His left eye was a dark, rich, wood color brown, while his right was a pale leaf green, shiny and glinting with interest as he too looked the other over.
"Do you hurt anywhere?" He asked a small moment after, noticing the other hadn't moved an inch since their short lived staring contest.
The boy in the oversized blue jacket nodded, placing a hand to his throat, before pointing to his other injuries. His knee and whole upper right leg hurt, his arms had small cuts from the bramble he had been running through. His head spun wildly as he tried to sit up, and from the unfamiliarity of it all, he felt nauseous from the lightheadedness.
The mismatched eyed boy gave a small nod. "I'll be careful then. I'm Mono, you are?" he asked, slowly helping the other boy up from the ground, a tight hold on his arms as he slowly and gently lifted him up from the hard ground.
"Sev--" he barely croaked, wheezing as the word came to a quick end. He coughed heavily, face twisted in pain as he took a moment to try and catch his breath, his throat burning once again, "--en"
Mono gave a small nod to him again. "You'll be okay, Seven, I know a place to get you some help. Are you alone?" He asked, beginning to help the injured boy limp to wherever he was leading him to.
Seven shook his head, starting to grow frantic as he remembered who had also been thrown out with him. "Sis--" he whimpered out.
Pushing through a bush, Mono helped the other. "I'll fine her too, if I don't find her, I'm sure Four can. He's an amazing scout, he can find her. How old are you?" Mono sounded desperate to keep the small talk going, noticing the smaller boy next to him begin to rock slightly back and forth, his breathing starting to get more ragged the more they walked.
Seven, clearly unable to speak now, rose his hand, four fingers up. The boy in brown looked a little shocked, but nodded his head again.
"I'm five. How long have you been out? I got kicked out a few months ago," He said, noticing the sudden lack of response from the other for moment, before quickly reaching out and grabbing him before he could topple over.
Seven's vision was blurry, his breathing now just short gasps as exhaustion and pain coursed through him. His running had tired him out already, and now adding the pain his body reminded himself with each heartbeat felt too much to handle.
He leaned against the other, his eyes growing heavy as the world around him grew dimmer. He felt Mono shake his shoulder, which he groaned as his head pinged with more pain.
"Hey, just a little bit more. C'mon, stay awake," he said. Seven could barely lift his head up to look, through the fuzziness, he could make out a hole in the bottom of a tree.
When they came to it, the green and brown eyed boy carefully helped him in, never losing his grip on him as he followed after.
The younger could only remember hushed speaking after that, occasionally being shook awake by Mono, before blacking out soon after.
***
Eventually, he stirred awake, only this time in an empty room. He laid down on a large bed of soft leaves and moss, his wounds dressed and tended to.
He slowly sat up, careful to no open his wounds, looking around at his surroundings.
It was an open room, more beds laying across the floor, some with kids in them while some were empty. Small jars of fireflies gave light in the room, dotted around and providing soft lighting for the sleeping children in the otherwise dark room.
Nooks were dug out in the dirt walls, holding bottles of medicine and slightly dirty bandages, a few blankets as well. The air was scented with lavender, Seven finding himself growing at ease as he breathed the calm and sweet aroma.
A desk was placed not that far from him, another kid, much older than him, working diligently as he wrote on an old, tattered paper with a small stick of what seemed to be charcoal.
Upon sensing the other wake, the child at the desk turned, Seven slightly taken aback by his looks. Both of his eyes were a strange amber-y color, striking against the darkness around him as the fireflies on his desk blocked out most of him in dark shadows.
His jaw looked slightly twisted, sitting uneven in a way Seven felt uneasy looking at. He cradled a limp arm in a make shift sling made of old fabric rather than bandages. As he got up, Seven noticed he seemed to struggle to walk, teetering back and forth as he came to him.
The younger was frozen stiff, watching the older boy with fright filled eyes. The boy with the twisted jaw gave a small, closed mouth smile, making a few signals with his hand to him.
Seven wasn't sure what he was trying to say, just watched as the boy looked over his wounds, slightly humming in thought as he gently touched them, judging Seven's reactions to the touches.
He mostly made pain yelps and whimpers as the boy touched his sore wounds, his hand going up to his throat as he squeaked and whined over the pain.
Eventually, Twist, Seven would later learn, got up, picking a small bottle from one of the nooks and placed it in his sling, grabbing a small cup of water, and came back, offering the pain killers to him.
Hesitantly, Seven took them, and after a bit, felt the pain begin to slowly numb down to where it was more tolerable. The older left him alone soon after, going back to whatever he was doing at his desk.
Seven looked over at the other sleeping kids around him, dark blue eyes looking over for any child in an oversized yellow coat, or at least for a small braid with a red ribbon, only to frown as he saw no one with that same description.
Glancing back at the child at the desk, Seven carefully and quietly got up, tip toeing out of what he supposed was a room for those who were hurt or injured.
He quietly crept out, momentarily being blinded by bright firelight from torches in what seemed like a rabbit burrow.
He looked both ways, not wanting to be snuck up on, and went to the right. The tunnel lead off to the side, and as he peeked around the corner, relaxed as he saw a familiar dark haired brunette with mismatch eyes.
Mono stood with another boy, who seemed far older than him. He wore a dirty white tee shirt, a black coat draped over his shoulders, his dark pants ripped and tattered at the end. His hair was a mess, in the color of raven feathers, in contrast to his skin, which was as pale as fresh snow. His eyes were a dark brown, like the rich chocolate he and his sister would sometimes have if they behaved.
"Commander Thirteen, Four sent me to tell you we haven't found the girl yet, he wanted to know if you had any ideas," Mono said, his still high pitched voice making him seem even smaller compared to the taller and older child.
The older, Thirteen, or whatever Mono had called him, gave a small hum. His brown eyes flashed towards the door, Seven retreating his head from around the corner, back pressed to the wall.
"Well, why don't we ask the only one who knows where she is. It's okay, kid, no one's gonna hurt you here, you can come out," stated a bold, yet caring voice.
Seven gulped nervously, looking back in with much hesitation. Mono and Thirteen looked at him, Mono smiling warmly, coming over to him.
"You're okay!" He cheered. Seven flinched softly as the other's words reverberated in his head. He rose a hand and pressed it against it, hoping to still the pounding in his skull. He gave a small nod, though, smiling.
His throat was still too sore to speak, but didn't seem to burn as badly from what he could feel. Thirteen came over, before crouching down to their height, a small smile on his thin face.
"I'm Commander Thirteen, leader of this place. What's your name?" He asked softly, hoping to not startle the poor boy more than he already was.
Seven rose his hands, holding up seven fingers for the other to see. Thirteen looked at them, before nodding his head. "It's nice to meet you, Seven. We're looking for your sister, if you help us find her, we can give you two a good home here," he said.
The younger boy didn't quiet know what to say to the other. How could there ever be such a thing as a 'good home'? Were there caring adults here? He hadn't seen any.
But Rain needed help, that's why he was out in the first place. He had to get them food or else they could get sick and die. Rain was already getting a case of the sniffles and her skin was becoming feverish. He had to get her something eat to help her.
Slowly he gave Thirteen a nod. He could take them to their shelter, he knew where to find Rain. After that, maybe they could help them.
Thirteen smiled to him, before looking over to Mono, standing up, straightening out his black fur coat.
"Mono, I'm trusting you with taking our little buddy here to Four and the others. This will be your first task a newbie scout. Are you up for the job?" Thirteen asked, a tone in his voice that sounded almost like a prep talk Seven had heard his mother give him before he had to go see the scary doctor.
Mono nodded, throwing his small fist into the air. "Yes, sir!"
Thirteen gave a small smile to him, before reaching over, patting his brown hair. "That's the spirit, bud. Well, what are you still standing around for, go, go!"
Mono took the other boy's hand, beginning to lead them down the rabbit tunnel, Seven finding himself growing a smile of his own as they ran.
***
Finding Four was a lot easier then what Seven expected, though, spotting a child cladded in white wrapping in a dark forest wasn't all that difficult of a task.
He looked over, surprised when he saw the two younger kids come through the bushes. "Four, Commander Thirteen said to bring Seven to you!" Mono said, his enthusiasm clear as day as he smiled brightly in pride in finding the other.
Seven felt a bit scared when he first saw the other child. Four was wrapped in multiple bandages, reminding him of the mummy in a book he had read with Rain's help. His eyes were a bright hazel-yellow color, seemingly glowing from the shadows his bandages gave.
Seven noticed a yellow shirt on him, also covered in bandages, along with a pair of shorts. He seemed to be around nine or so, a bit older than him or Mono.
He gave a questioning look. "Is he even able to get around without you pulling on him?" He said, lightly scolding Mono as he looked at them.
Mono suddenly looked worried, looking to the other boy, his eyes rounded with concern. "O-oh, I didn't think about that. Are you okay, Seven?" He asked.
The boy in blue looked to him, before glaring at Four from under his bangs. He was fine, the pain killers were still working, and if he didn't concentrate on the pain in his leg too much, it's not so bad. He gave Mono a small nod. "Fine," he whispered.
Mono relaxed, noticeably relieved he hadn't done anything wrong. "Oh, thank goodness. I don't want to hurt you, at least, I didn't mean to if I did." Seven felt himself smile again as the boy in brown seemed to cheer back up, holding his hand a little tighter.
"Well that's good then. Seven, you can take us to your sister, right?" Four asked. Seven looked to him, giving another nod to him. He could take them to her with no problem.
So, this time, he took the lead, continuing to hold Mono's hand as they made their way through the reeds and tall grass.
They passed through a small creek, the younger boys giggling as they splashed each other as they crossed it, Four keeping an eye out as they did so.
They slid down a small slope next, before passing the tree with the trap Mono had found the other in. Seven carefully lead them through the traps he knew of, going through thick patches of brambles, passed a small swampy lake, before they finally came to a small mouth of a cave.
Seven pointed to it, Four taking a few steps forward, look around. He pressed a hand to the rock, looking at a few marks that was on it.
"An old bear cave. You two are lucky the Hunter took care of this guy a few years ago," he muttered, looking over to the two. "Where's your sister at?"
Seven let go of Mono's hand, the small boy coming into den. He took a breath to speak, before coughing as he felt his throat dry suddenly. The coughs echoed in the den, before he finally calmed down, through his throat stung.
"Rai-- Rain-!" He tried to call out, before burst out coughing again, this time falling onto his knees, blood speckling the rocks as he held his throat, tears lining his eyes.
Mono came to him, worried as he crouched next to him. He looked at the blood, but couldn't find the will to speak about it. Instead, he looked up, eyes scanning the cave. "Rain?" He asked, raising his voice as he tried again, "Rain!"
From the darkness, he noticed a small movement from the side of the cave. Four came over to inspect what was wrong with the young boy, as Mono rose from his spot, coming to where he saw the movement.
He found a small girl, her skin having a thin film of sweat over her, shivering from her spot on the floor. A small red ribbon was clutched in her hand, long, rich brown hair falling behind her and along her neck and shoulders. She wore a yellow coat, the sleeve a bit long on her. She wore white stretchy pants, dirtied from a puddle of nasty cave water she was left laying in.
Her eyes were closed, and her breathing made small noises that wasn't normal sounding. He reached down, carefully picking her up, filled with concern as he noticed how light and thin she was.
She didn't stir awake, but noticeable curled into him, happily accepting the warmth he gave. Mono came over, holding Rain in his arms by the bend of her knees and back, bridal style as they called it.
Slowly, she opened an eye, showing pale eerie green, almost white in color. "Bubby..?" She whimpered weakly.
"It's okay, we got you, I got you," Mono said softly. The smaller girl looked up to him. "Sevvy?"
Mono turned, holding her still, beginning to make his way back to the others. "We got him too. You'll be okay, both of you."
Four picked Seven up, deciding the young boy was too tired and weak to make the trip back. Seven tried to protest, whining as he tried to squirm. He wanted to know if Rain was okay first, they could worry about him later.
But after a moment, Seven could feel himself slowly passing out. The pain killers finally wearing off, the pain in his legs, head, and arms were beginning to ping with a fiery reminder of his stupidity. He tried to call out to ask Mono if his sister was fine, but the world grew dimmer and dimmer at a rapid rate, finding himself passing out once more.
***
Seven woke up again in what he guessed was the same recovery room as last time. He sat up, looking back around. Everything was the same, except for the fact the boy with the twisted jaw wasn't here anymore.
He looked over to the bed closest to him, seeing a figure shivering on her cot, a blanket placed over her. Her pale face was twisted in discomfort, her face buried in her arms as she slept. Her breathing was noticeably more clear, the noise of her chest congestion now barely being heard thanks to the lavender in the room easing her breathing.
Seven relaxed, laying back down on his side, looking at his sister. Rain was okay now. She could get help, and they even had a new home now if Thirteen kept his word.
A small smile came to his face again, closing his eyes. He gave a small yawn, feeling a comforting blanket of exhaustion slowly cover him. He felt himself ease into a peaceful and comforting dreamless sleep, something he hadn't had in a long time.

Time for you guys to learn a little about Seven, Rain, and Mono's paaassst.
Yes, so this is how Sev and Mons met and how him and Rain joined the rebellion. I thought it be a good chapter, but it took a lot longer than I thought it would be.
Hope you all enjoyed!
Take care!

Two updates today, yaaay! I mostly just fixed a few typos and added the beginning, as before the beginning was originally a small dream section of an earlier chapter.
Also, I know the height thing is definitely wrong since most characters would technically be too big to fit in the warren (Thirteen is 15 and if we are going off in-game teenage Mono, there is no dang way he could fit in it)
So, long story short, the kids don't hit a major growth spurt until, like, 18 or something. Just thought I should point it out.
Anyways, hope you all enjoyed!
Take care!

The baby beans, I forgot how much I loved this chapter-
Smol Mono is better than present Mono
Hope you all enjoyed!
