Chetachi

Operation Tochi's Spec is going better than I ever anticipated.

As it turned out, Phineas and his best friend, Kesiena sit directly behind Deja and I.

We talk on a regular and, as such, have become friends.

Tochi would be so proud of me.

He is actually very nice and is fun to be around.

This won't be hard at all.

Today's Friday and I just got into school.

I was on my way to class when Majid suddenly appeared in front of me.

I blinked.

"Hey?"

"We need to talk," he said firmly.

"Um..."

"Like, now, Chetachi."

I sighed and glanced at his dark eyes.

They were always so intense.

"Follow me," I said.

I took him to the library, more specifically, to the room only I used.

It was supposed to be the Librarian's office, then the school made it a store room, only to clear it out and leave it empty a term later.

So, I made it my own, complete with a desk, chair, book shelf and air conditioner, that'll all be left behind for the next Library Prefect.

I closed the door and dropped my bag on the desk as soon as we entered.

Then I stood with my arms crossed, facing him.

"I've been seeing you and Phineas,"he began.

"And?"

"I know you two are becoming friends."

"And?"

He sighed." Most importantly, Chetachi, I know you."

He was right.

He did know me.

Asides Deja and Beryl, Majid was the first friend I had here at Hillsong.

We competed together in debates and chess tournaments and grew really close.

We took our friendship to the next level a few years ago.

It was kept a secret from our friends because we were basically testing the waters.

We eventually ended things on a mutual 'we had a good run, but we're better off as friends' level.

No hard feelings.

No heart break.

"Which is why I want you to stay away from Phineas," he completed.

"What?"

"You haven't changed much, Chetachi, you're still living life for your sister. That's why you approached Phineas all of a sudden, right? Because Tochi would've done so if she was alive?"

I stayed quiet and stared at the ground.

He's not wrong....

"I can see where this is headed. You'll both catch feelings, but then your feelings will be constricted and you'll end up hurting each other."

"I wouldn't hurt Phineas or any one," I said.

"That's what you think, but living out another person's life only messes yours up."

"I'm just becoming his friend, that's all."

He took another deep sigh." Phineas might look like a hard headed jock, but he's very sensitive. He feels things too much. If you two do end up together and it turns out it's because that's what you thought your dead sister might have wanted, I promise you, it won't be pretty."

I rubbed at my nose and tried to avoid his very intense gaze.

"The ghost of your relationship with Tochi is haunting you, Chetachi. You can either let it go and live normally or keep up this charade with Phineas."

He moved much closer to me, dark eyes fixed on mine as he made his point clear.

"But once shit hits the fan, don't be surprised when I only help him out."

With that, he turned round and left the room.

How...how dare he?!

He's jealous....yes, of course, he's just jealous.

I paced up and down, trying to calm down.

Ghost of my relationship with Tochi?

What nonsense!

I grabbed my bag and stomped all the way into my classroom.

Deja was dozing as usual on her desk, not even stirring when I crashed down on my seat.

"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning,"Phineas tutted from behind me.

I wanted to whip round and say;"Is it not that your know-it-all best friend!".

Instead I smiled and shook my head.

"What got you so upset?"he asked.

Suddenly and thankfully, the assembly bell rang.

I tapped Deja awake and helped her up to her feet.

"It's nothing, really, I'm okay," I told Phineas.

He tilted his head a bit." If you say so."

Not exactly as shrewd as Majid....

Works for me.

.......

An added perk of being in SS3 was that I could skip doing sports on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Instead, I spend my time in my library room.

Beryl practices with either the dancers or the cheerleaders, while Deja sleeps or does Chemistry stuff.

I popped a mint in my mouth as I turned a page of the book in my hands.

Through the window, I could hear the gentle lapping of the sea.

All was peaceful and tranquil until someone knocked.

"Chetachi, are you in there?" I heard Phineas ask from the other side of the door.

"Um....yeah."

He opened the door and stepped in.

I took the opportunity to scope him from head to toe.

He was dressed in the school's official track suit, but he made them look soo good.

"What are you doing here? How did you know I was in here?"

"I asked Beryl."

"Why?"

"Because I have no one to go to sports with,"he said, almost whining.

"Your friends?"

"Kes is doing Head Boy shit, Majid just doesn't want to, Archie is reading and Ola is probably making out with his girlfriend somewhere."

"Well, I don't wanna go, sorry," I said, plainly.

Wait for it, he's going to beg....

"Please!"

What did I say?

"Besides," he said, tapping his badge."I'm the male Sports Prefect, I can actually report you for this."

"No, you can't."

"Okay, fine, just please."

I sighed and stood up.

"You had to come just when I got to the good part," I mumbled.

"You can carry your book if you want to,"he said."I just don't wanna be lonely."

"You won't be lonely, you'll have crowds of adoring fans and whatnot," I stated.

He pursed his lips and I chuckled.

"I'm coming na, shuu!"

"What about Adejare? I didn't see her with Beryl,"he said as we walked out of the library.

"She needed some shut-eye."

"Why does she sleep so much?"

"Wouldn't you like to know," I answered, rolling my eyes.

He nudged me with his elbow.

"Do you always have to be so sassy?"

"Do you always have to ask so many JAMB questions?" I fired back.

He raised his hands up in surrender and I just had to laugh.

We left the school building and walked towards the Sports Center, which houses the gym, swimming pools, basketball court and squash courts.

Still within the Sports Center, but outside, were the tennis courts and football pitch, with the running track around it.

Students milled about, some actually playing sports while others gisted with friends, used their phones or were part of the clapping committee.

"Hi, Phineas!" some JSS3 girls coo'd as we passed them.

Phineas smiled and nodded at them in greeting.

The girls giggled and swooned among themselves.

"Must be nice to be popular," I said.

"I'm not popular," Phineas said.

"Uh, yes, you are."

"I mean I'm not popular, as in me as a person. My looks might be popular but I'm not."

I nodded, never having thought about it that way before.

We got to one of the basketball courts.

He winked at me before jogging over to the guys playing to join them.

I found a seat and made myself comfortable, alternating between watching the game and reading my book.

"Did you see that?!" Phineas excitedly asked me each time he scored.

They ended the game as soon as the girls' basketball team came.

They were lead by Zik, who walked straight to the guys and demanded the ball.

Darius pushed his way forward and they held each other's look in a death glare.

A hushed silence settled over all the spectators.

It was then broken by scattered whispers.

"Are they going to fight again?"

"Film wants to start o, grab your popcorn!"

I saw their lips move in speech, but couldn't quite catch what they were saying.

Eventually Darius handed the ball over to Zik and she smirked triumphantly.

The boys shaked and patted each other for a game well played, before going their separate ways.

I noticed the way Darius glared at Zik on his way out.

Like, if looks could kill, she'd be lifeless on the ground.

"Come on, let's head to the field. I heard there's a match going on," Phineas said.

I blinked at him.

He was drenched in sweat and breathing quite heavily.

"You're still going to play? Aren't you tired?"

He chuckled." I'm just gonna watch. Nice to see you care 'bout my health, though."

"As if , " I said with a snort.

That was the right response, right?

What would Tochi have said?

I looked to see him smiling and shaking his head.

I heaved a silent sign of relief as I descended from my seat.

.......

The bell signifying end of sports range just moments after the football match ended.

We were headed back to the school building when Phineas stopped.

"So, Chetachi, I was thinking, his 'bout we meet up after school and hang out."

Yes, yes, yes!

"Hang out?" I asked, a blank look on my face.

"Yeah, to just talk and chill, you know."

I squinted my eyes at him. "Why? What's the end motive?"

"Huh?"

"It's almost impossible to do something without expecting something at the end of it. That's just how humans are now."

He shrugged." I just wanna hang out with a friend, that's all."

I nodded and smiled." Okay, sure."

"Right! Where should we meet up?"

"The beach!" I said quickly.

"What time?"

"Hmm....7:00 would be okay."

He grinned."7:00 sounds great."

"I'll see you there then....and, Phineas?"

I'd observed that his top was sticking to him like second skin.

"Yeah?"

"Go change your shirt, dude."

"Oh! Yes, of course," he said, before rushing off.

I continued on my way to the classroom.

I couldn't help but smile to myself.

Looks like I'm going out tonight.....
