Phineas

Thursdays have to be my least favorite day in the whole week.

Why?

I honestly have no clue, they just are.

I stared at the digital clock on the wall in our classroom.

11:30 am.

I sighed.

The day was going too slow for my liking.

I observed my class to prevent boredom from driving me stark, raving mad.

We had a free period so my classmates were either gisting, studying or just doing whatever.

Craig, Mark and Chike argued over football players while Iheoma and Angel traded beauty tips.

Thursdays.

Beside me, Kes flipped through his Physics notebook, his face contorted in concentration.

In front of us, Adejare was sleeping while Chetachi probably had her nose stuck in a book somewhere.

Maybe I should study too.

I opened my desk and reached for a notebook, not even bothering to check what subject I'd picked.

I peeled back the cover and started reading.

My eyes felt droopy after the first few sentences.

Thursdays.

I was about to blissfully fall into dreamland when I heard my name being called.

"Senior Phineas?" a tiny child, probably in JSS1 or 2 said, tapping me.

"Yeah..huh?" I asked, still woozy.

"Coach Marene is calling you," she said.

I rubbed my eyes clean of drowsiness.

"I've heard, thanks," I said and the small thing skipped off.

I rose from my chair and walked out of the class.

The journey to Coach Marene's office was allowed me to quietly appreciate the beautiful scenery of the school.

It was renovated from an old mansion in the colonial days, so it gave off a vintage vibe that was still quite modern.

With old,yet firm bricked walls and hallways that were almost reminiscent of those in a European palace.

Not to mention spots like the courtyard, with its stone fountain and beautiful flower arrangements.

Let's just say, Hillsong High is a lovely school.

"Come in," the female coach said after I'd knocked.

I walked into the office and saw that Coach Sam's chair was empty.

"He went out today,"she said with a small smile when she noticed my attention on the vacant space.

She handed me a sheet of paper.

It had Inter-house Sports Competition Plans written boldly as the heading.

"Make sure to read this and then discuss with Zik, okay?" she said.

I nodded and carefully stuffed the paper in one of my pockets.

"You can go now."

I smiled politely and left the office.

Back in the SS3 block, I whistled softly as I strolled to my classroom.

All was peaceful and quiet.

Until, Ola suddenly flew past me and landed on the floor.

Before I could react to that, Darius landed on top of him, his fists working rapidly to add more bruises to his face.

"Fucking bastard!" Ola spat as I heard a sickening crack and blood spilled about his face.

I dragged Darius away from him, only to have to dodge a swinging punch.

"Darius! What the hell, man?" I yelled.

Hearing the commotion, people were already by their class doors, watching the unfolding drama.

"Ouuuu!" I heard Lekki squeal from my class.

Ola jumped up and pounced on Darius, giving the boy two solid blows to the abdomen.

That didn't seem to faze him at all and he only cracked his knuckles.

There was a strangely fierce look in his eyes that told me Ola would end up in the hospital or worse if Darius wasn't stopped.

With the help of two other boys, I was finally able to hold him down.

"Get off me! Let me teach this stupid motherfucker a lesson!Nobody can insult my father and get away with it!" he hollered.

"Not a chance, bro," I said through gritted teeth.

Whispers and mutters flew about as the fight seemed to be over.

The few juniors who had come up to watch, vanished before anyone else noticed them.

"Say cheese!" Sebastian Soyinka quipped as he took a picture of the scene.

He always puts shit like this in the newspaper.

Rhianne suddenly jumped out of her class, barefoot, and ran towards Darius, who had stopped yelling and was breathing heavily.

She crouched to him and held his face, which surprisingly wasn't even that wounded.

"Darius!" she whined."What happened,huh?"

He sighed and pushed us off of him, dusting himself off.

With one last death glare at Ola, he took Rhianne's arm and walked away with her.

The other boys bounced too, leaving me alone in the hallway with Ola.

"Why did he leave, huh? Abi na because he see im babe? He for allow me beat am, na!" Ola ranted.

"Enough!" I said."Come with me."

He spat out a mix of blood and spit, right there on the floor, before following me to an empty room on the floor below.

I sat and looked at him.

I couldn't tell whether his nose was broken or not because of the blood and bruises all over his now bashed up face.

Archie, Kes and Majid burst in a few moments later.

"We heard and we saw," Kes said.

Archie nodded, a very concerned look on his face.

Majid simply folded his arms and leaned against the wall.

"You'd better go to the school clinic for that," I said, pointing at his nose.

"No need," he grumbled, placing two fingers on each side of the bridge of his nose.

He worked the cartilage fiercely, until something snapped and he cried out in pain.

He had shifted his nose back to its proper position.

Wonder where he learnt how to do that?

"Okay, Ola, exactly what happened? Darius said something about you insulting his dad," I said.

"His dad?" Archie said. "Dude! You know his dad's in the army, na, and a big time General at that. You could be in serious trouble!"

" You think I give two shits or a rat's ass?Darius should go and ask that General of his what he did to my father," Ola growled, wiping his face.

"I have a question," Majid said. "Did you or did you not find out this information from those Elysian guys you hang out with?"

"What?" Kes asked.

"You still hang out with those punks?" I almost spat out.

In SS2, some of his so called friends from our sister school, Elysian Heights Academy, framed him for one of their dumb crimes.

It was thanks to connections that my guy wasn't thrown into jail.

It didn't and still doesn't make sense that he enjoys their company.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, knows that all Elysianites are trouble.

Ola laughed.

He laughed and laughed, great gulps of laughter that made his shoulders heave.

"You think you know? You really think you know?" he said, almost playfully.

Then his expression hardened.

"You don't know anything, Mustapha!Nothing! So don't go around acting like you do, when you don't!" he all but screamed.

Majid looked as cooly nonchalant as ever, staring Ola in the eye.

"Um, 'Jid, let's give him some space," Kes said, patting him on the shoulder.

With that, they left, Archie following them moments later.

"We're here for you, never forget that, Ola," I told him calmly.

"I know. Majid should just....stop! It's fucking annoying, and he really doesn't know all the shit that's going down."

I was nearly tempted to ask exactly what was going on, but I left it.

Maybe later, when he's less likely to knock all my teeth out.

There was a knock on the door and before I could answer, it swung open and Janice strutted in.

"I leave you alone for five fucking minutes, Olawole!" she said, folding her hands sassily.

Ola smirked.

"Don't look at me like that, you street fighter," she joked, ruffling his hair.

I simply stepped back.

The dynamics of their relationship was another case in itself.

"You look beat up bad, honey. Let's get you to the nurse."

Janice pulled him up and led him out the door.

I followed.

Then the announcement system crackled to life.

"Olawole Adebola, please report to the Principal's office!" the speakers boomed.

Janice gave him a worried look.

"Go to class, babe," he said, pecking her slightly.

She sighed, turned and sashayed away.

"Looks like I'll have to face the music for this one. I don't regret anything, though," Ola said, facing me.

"Just take it like a man, dude," I encouraged him, not really knowing what to say.

He walked off.

I sighed and ran a hand over my face.

Thursdays.
