Pocket Watch

Izuku was sitting miserably on his bed, staring at the wall. Katsuki had been bullying him all week, but it was different last Monday.

He'd been bragging about how he'd earned the qualifications to take the Tutorial. Apparently the blonde had gotten the system in his eye the night before, and had refrained from going to the Tutorial just so he could brag about it, and put Izuku down one last time.

Izuku looked up when his mother knocked on his door.

  "Come in!" He called.

Inko opened the door, smiling at Izuku sadly.

"Izuku.. the things your father left behind came today.." she said.

Izuku stared a moment, his own sad smile stretching thinly across his face.

  "Thanks mum."

Inko put the small box she was carrying down on the bed beside Izuku.

"I haven't looked, but these are the things he wanted you to have.. I'll leave you be."

Inko smiled and left the room, closing the door gently.

Izuku sighed, opening the box and taking out the few items within.

Hisashi Midoriya had been a Player. Someone who passed the Tutorial and entered the Tower, conquering it's many floors.

He'd been an incredibly popular Ranker, being the head of the famous Fire Dragon clan. He'd been known only as Dragon, as his quirk was fire breathing.

Unfortunately, as with many Players, he died, somewhere in the tower. He could have been killed by a powerful monster, a hidden trap, or even another Player.

Izuku carefully held an old, scuffed, scratched pocket watch.

It was a gift Izuku gave his father before he left for the Tutorial. It was well worn, and when Izuku opened it, he could tell it was broken, maybe beyond repair.

Izuku was about to put the watch down, when a voice reached his ears.

  "Izuku!" The voice said.

  "Dad..?" Izuku muttered.

"It's been a long time son.. If you've got my diary then I guess I'm dead. I'm sorry to put you and Inko through that. I'm also sorry I was never around for you.. but I was away to make enough money to support you and your mother. Unfortunately.. well, I can't do that anymore, can I? I don't want to put more strain on Inko.. so I'm giving this to you. Izuku. You're going to be 14 soon, that's the age the Tower starts choosing Tutorial candidates."

Izukus eyes widened. Him? A Player? But he didn't have a quirk!

"I know you're quirkless.. but the Tower will compensate for that. The rewards you earn will be greater, because of your disadvantage. There are weapons, artifacts and skills that will even the playing field. And then... There's this."

An image appeared in Izuku's mind, of his father stood tall, breathing flames and.. his reptilian eyes?

"All of my abilities, achievements and skills. I pass them on to you son. The only one you can't have is the fire breathing, that's my favourite after all." Hisashi laughed at his own joke.

Izuku stared at the image in his mind in awe.

  All of his dad's abilities??

"So I'm sure you'll be able to stand on even ground with those people with the flashy quirks, huh Izuku? Anyway, this is a diary, so I'll let it get to that part now. Good luck son, you're going to need it!"

With that, his father's voice disappeared. In its place, images rushed through Izuku's mind, showing him the tutorial, the tower, Hisashi's teammates and their betrayal.

  Izuku frowned.

The Fire Dragons had killed Hisashi. Izuku wanted to make them pay for killing his father, buy he wasn't strong enough yet.

"I'll climb the tower, and I'll avenge you dad.." he muttered.

When the images stopped racing through his mind, Izuku felt a burning pain in his body.

He grunted, but kept the noise to a minimum. A message appeared in his vision, floating before his eyes.

  *Succession process starting.*

*Succession is incomplete. Finish the succession after your body has been perfected.*

  *Succession progress 5 percent*

Izuku sighed in relief as the pain ebbed away.

*Register your player at the obelisk.*

  Izuku grinned to himself.

He was going to become a Player, and a Hero!

The next day, Izuku had a supply of provisions, a change of clothes and a knife his father left him alongside the pocket watch.

He checked his status window one last time as his mother fussed around him.

  *Izuku Midoriya.*

Izuku nodded to himself, stepping forwards and watching the black door materialise before him.

The greenette slipped a plain white mask onto his face, stepping through the door.

*You have entered floor 0 where the Tutorial begins.*

Izuku walked down the long corridor, looking around with his five senses curiously.

  *Proficiency has increased!*

A portal suddenly opened to the side, allowing a goblin in a tuxedo to step through and greet Izuku.

"Hello there! I must say, we weren't expecting any more newcomers this late, a week into the tutorial! Are you sure you want to attempt it now? You can always come back next time."

  Izuku shook his head.

"That's alright. I'll receive better rewards if I'm later, won't I?" He asked.

  The goblin nodded gleefully.

"You already seem to have a grasp of how the tower works. Well, if you insist, please head forwards. The first trial of the tutorial is there!" With that the goblin retreated through another portal, leaving Izuku alone.
