Chapter 2

"Jason?" I say calmly, "Can I talk to you?"

"I guess." Says a muffled voice coming from the other side of the curtain that separates me and Jason.

I slowly open the curtain and scooch my way over to the sad little lump curled up in a blanket.

"Jason, I know how you're feeling, I really do. I miss mom and dad just as much as you do, but they had to leave. They knew that what they were doing was the right thing to do. They wanted to protect us." I tell him.

"How is leaving protecting us?" He asks. "If anything, it's putting us into more harm!"

"No Jason, our parents were sick! If they had stayed, we would be dead!" I say. "Even though we can't get sick with the disease, we can still suffer the consequences. When adults become infected, the disease makes them go crazy. This is why we can't go out in the rain remember?"

Jason sniffs and says "Yeah, I know. They come out of hiding in the rain, and - and..." He chokes back some tears.

I finish his sentence, "They do terrible things."

"Yeah." He says quietly. "Jess, I hear them at night, when it's raining - they make terrible noises - like a scream mixed with a gurgle."

"I know." I say while hugging him. "Are you ready to come out of hiding?" (He's still covered with the blanket.)

"I guess so. Hey - "

A deafening bang cuts Jason off. We both jump and turn our eyes towards the door. Bang. Jason looks at me with a scared, tear streaked look on his face. He knew just as well as I did that someone, or something, was trying to break in to our camper.

Hey readers! Hope you enjoyed! Sorry that it's so short again, hopefully when I get rolling the chapters will be longer. And sorry for the cliffhanger at the end. Please leave comments and suggestions! I want to make this book be the best it can be! And also, leave title suggestions, I'm really stumped on that. Thanks again guys!
