Memory Lane
~~~~(Aurora's POV)~~~~
"Aurora...I had no idea." Flora spoke in disbelief. I keep my gaze down, as I've lost movement and voice altogether. My illness has limited me to just eye movement.
'No one did.' I respond. It does feel better to finally tell someone, and I'm glad it was Flora.
"What did you mean by that day was the beginning?" She asks too many questions.
'I don't think you should know.' If she was shocked about my explanation, then she will definitely not be able to handle the rest.
"Aurora, what you told me was the beginning and there's more, then I wanna know." Flora states leaning closer grabbing my hand.
'Why? There's nothing you can do, it's all in the past.'
"No, but I'm here to listen. I wanna help you by listening."
'I've delt with this for ten years.'
"And now it's time for you to come clean. Please Auri," my sisters voice sounded broken and concerned.
'You haven't called me that in years.' My voice quiet. She gave me an encouraging smile. I took a deep breath, with the help of the mask and said, 'After that day in the park...it started happening in school. At first it was those boys from the park, then others soon joined in.'
(Flashback)
Beep....beep...beep.
I shut my alarm off, stretched and got ready for the morning. I quickly shower and dress in dark skinny jeans, black tank top, and a bright Victoria secret pink long sleeve shirt. The long sleeve covers the bruises and marks.
I quickly walk downstairs and grab an apple for breakfast. I notice that mom is up, and she greets me.
"Sorry mom but I have to leave early. I will see you later, love you!" I call to her and run out the door. I enjoy being outdoors, it gives off this calming effect. I like walking, it clears the mind.
The place I call hell comes into view. I dread coming here everyday, but I keep telling myself just a bit longer, then I'm out of here. I walk up the steps and push through the doors. The halls are somewhat empty, but that's only momentarily.
Close to eight o'clock, students start filling up the halls. I quickly grab my books from my locker and turn around to see that I'm surrounded by Thalia and her followers. I pull my books closer to me and keep my gaze down on the floor.
"Oh look it's the nerd." Her voice squeaked, and her followers laughing like the hyenas they are.
"What do you want Thalia." I state rather than ask as a question.
"Oh you know, since today is seniors last day until graduation, we wanted to say our goodbyes." I didn't like the sound of that. Not one bit.
"Well sorry to burst your bubble, but class is about to start." I retort and slip past her and headed to english class. Once I got to the room, I head to the back towards the window seat. I sit and open my books ready for today's lesson.
***Time Skip***
It was finally time for lunch. I entered the lunchroom and went straight for the salad bar. I got my salad all made with some fruit on the side, and a bottle of water. I walked to a table that was in the far back, by the window.
As I ate, I stared out the window giving me the view of the woods. Mid second bite, when Thalia comes over in her pumps, really short shorts, and too small of a shirt.
"Why are you guys following me?"
"Because we didn't give you our parting gift, since you ran off like a baby you are."
"Why can't you guys leave me alone? I've done nothing to you."
"Oh but you see, you have done something and that was being a nuisance." She picks up my bowl of salad and she dumps it all on my head. Then one of her lackies dumps the fruit on me and the I feel a rush of cold water.
Their laughter echoed off the walls, making everyone else in the cafeteria turn towards us. Then they burst out laughing at the scene. I can feel myself starting to shake, and it wasn't good. I stood up and stalked out of there, their laughter following me down the hall.
I run to the bathroom and stare at myself in the mirror. It looks like my salad threw up on me, with a deep sigh, I begin to clean myself up. I pick off the lettuce and toss it in the trash and fixing my clothes.
Once I was satisfied, I headed to the library. It's a good thing I have an open period, I won't have to see those preps, jocks, and jerks. I enter the library and am embraced by the silence. A smile makes its appearance as I go to a back room, that's a lounging area.
This area had bean bag chairs, lights that outline the ceiling, and a rug underneath the bean bag chairs. I sat down in one of the chairs and pulled out a book from my bag. I began to read where I left off in one of my favorite series 'Evermore'.
***Time Skip***
The final bell rang for the day, students piling into the halls. I walk to my locker to grab my things as today was my last day. Graduation was only five days away, then I'm out of here! As I was grabbing my sketchbook, my locker door is slammed shut with my hand still caught in it.
"Ah," I gasp in pain and quickly open the door. I look to my right to see that boy Ty laughing his ass off.
"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't see you there." He had a sly grin on his face. I just glare daggers at him, as he walks away with his two friends in tow. I cradle my hand and inspect the damage. My right hand is swollen, fingers are blue and purple. I'll put ice on it when I get home.
I sling my bag on my shoulder and walk out. When I was walking through the lot, I saw my siblings with Ty and Thalia, laughing by his jeep. I couldn't catch their conversation but I knew it wasn't good.
I ignore them and keep walking. While I'm walking I'm close to the highway, halfway home, when I here a stampede of feet behind me. I went to turn around but am knocked to the ground by a hard blow to the face.
I look up to see Ty, his crew, Thalia and her crew, and the worst part...my siblings. I place my hand against my cheek and wince, knowing a bruise will be there tomorrow.
"What was that for?" I ask, my voice quiet, wishing this was all a bad dream.
"I'm tired of you back talking bitch. Guys I think it's time we teach her a lesson as our parting gift." Everyone agreed, even my siblings.
"I think that's a great idea Ty." Thalia states clinging to him with her devil smile.
"You all know what to do." That's all I hear before Ty's crew stalk forward and lay punch after punch. The punches feel like baseballs are raining down on my body. Pain spreads through my body, like I'm being thrown in dangerously cold water, that feels like needles jabbing at my skin.
For a brief moment the punches stop, and I take a shaky breath as a new kind of pain takes over. It feels like I'm being trampled with blades. I open my eyes for a brief moment to see Thalia and her crew are kicking me with their heeled shoes.
Their nails covering my skin in scratches. My hands are balled up trying to cover my face but that did no good. The kicking finally stopped and I ask,
"What did I do to deserve this?" My voice barely audible. I hear snickers all around me.
"Why you deserve this? I think your siblings can answer your question better than I can." Ty states with amusement clear in his voice.
Lily walks forward and has a look of pure anger. I can feel the hate radiate off of her in waves. She raises her hand and smacks my face, the force making my head snap to the left.
"You've been nothing but a nuisance to us since the day you've been born. You're nothing more than a teachers pet, and a goody-goody too shoes." Lilly states with venom in her voice. She hit me and threw in a few good kicks. Then it was Embers turn.
"I wish it was just us three and you were never born. You're nothing but a bitch who needs to be put in her place." He hits me and my body erupts from the new wave of pain. Lastly Liam stalks forward.
"Stop." My voice wavers.
"Why? You wouldn't be in this situation if you weren't born. Why haven't you died yet? We don't need or want you here." Liam retorts with no emotion, and face unreadable. That broke my heart and then I hear Ty and the others walk to his jeep.
I see something silver, long and narrow in Ty's hand. My body shakes as I'm scared of what's to happen next. Then out of nowhere, something heavy and metal hits my side. I gasp out in pain. Then I realize it's a baseball bat.
I open my eye just a wee bit and see smiles on Lilly's and Ember's faces. When I see Liam, his face has no emotion and he's watching them beat the life out of me. He won't even try to stop them!
The beating went on a while longer, the pain building up. Punches, kicks and hits from the bat keep raining down on me like rain from the heavens. One of the punches hits my eye and I Yelp in pain. After one more slam from the bat on my ribs, Ty says,
"I think she's learned her lesson. Let's leave." Ty then walks towards his jeep throwing the bat in the trunk. The rest of his crew following him along with my siblings.
"She'll run home crying to her mommy like the baby she is." Thalia spits at me and walks to the jeep. I open my eyes to see Liam staring at me from the window. What hurt the most was what he said and the look of hate in his eyes.
I hear the jeeps engine drive down the highway, the roaring grow faint. I just lay there, of the side curled up. After laying there for a few minutes, I had to get up. After many attempts, I'm able to stand.
I can't go home. I can't see them, not after what they did. I limp into the woods, going in a random direction. My body screaming at me to stop, but I keep going until my legs grow tired and collapse beneath me.
I curl up in a ball and burst into tears. Daylight turning to night, lightning bugs dancing in the dark. Sobs escape my lips, echoing off the trees. I can hear my name being called out in the distance.
I don't want to go home, anywhere but there. My body screaming in pain, and exhausted from the beating and walk, I slowly drifted off. Suddenly, a snort of warm air brushed against my cold skin.
I hear voices coming closer, then a pair of arms wrap around me. I whimper because of the pain and whoever is holding me, hushes me.
"Don't worry, I got you." I can't tell who it is, my mind is so foggy.
"No home...don't go...home" I groan out. I hear voices whispering to each other then a voice said,
"Sam, can she stay at your place?"
"Yeah, I'll inform Amy once we get there."
"Th-thank you," I whisper, my body aching with each step we take. I fall asleep to the hum of their heart beat.
(End of Flashback)
"That's why you never came home that night." Flora said sadly. I nod my head with tears brimming over the edge.
'I couldn't take it anymore, so I ran. I told them I didn't want to come home, and I'm grateful they didn't.'
"Mom and dad were scared when it was getting late, and you didn't come home. I remember dad calling Uncle Sam asking for help. Mom and dad didn't go to bed until they got a call about eleven o'clock. Mom nor dad said a word to us." Flora says, grasping my hand. She comes closer to me and hugs me for a long time.
I miss this dearly, the affection from family. Most importantly, the attention from my siblings. I wish I could move my arms to wrap around her, returning the favor. We stay like that until the door opens and Jesse comes in. Flora gets up and let's Jesse take her spot.
"I'll be out here if you need me." She gives me a smile, and I try to smile back failing to do so.
'Thanks flower.' I say before the door closes. I turn my eyes toward Jesse, as he strokes my cheek.
"I love you," he says kissing my forehead.
'And I love you.'
