Chapter 1: The Scribe
The boy sat and stared out his window. This boy's name is Mythily Tercinus. Mythily watched the raindrops trickle down his window, betting on which one would win. Come on, right come on, right come on- blast! The left drop got to the bottom of his window first. It was friday night and he didn't have any homework so he decided to amuse himself by watching the beautiful rain outside. It was really so beautiful.
The Tercinus family lived in a small town in England. So small that everyone knew each other. In this town, it rained quite a bit, but Mythily didn't mind. He loved it, actually. He loved cloudy and cold days. He loved the wind. He loved the rain. Most people might find these things depressing, but Mythily found them lovely and they made him happier than sunshine ever could.
Mythily turned his attention to a book that was lying on the floor. The book had a brown, leather cover with the words "The True Game" on it. The words were lined in silver and there was a black crescent moon underneath them. On the side of the book was a shiny, silver clasp that held the book closed. He knelt down on the floor next to the book and picked it up. He admired the pretty words for a few seconds then undid the clasp and looked inside.
Inside were instructions for a game.
The game was called "The True Game," of course, and it was a bit like chess. At least the board and the pieces reminded him of chess. He thought chess was too complicated for him.
The first few pages contained the rules then the rest of the pages were blank. And there were many more pages. He would have written something on them but he didn't have any ideas for a story. He wasn't very good at writing, in his opinion, but he had wonderful penmanship.
His attention was torn away from the book and placed on his phone when he heard it buzz on his bedside table. He tossed the book away and grabbed his phone, checking the message. It was from a number he didn't recognize.
"Hey! Wanna meet me at the old library?"
"Who is this?" He responded.
"Oh! Sorry, this is Ricki from calligraphy class."
"Oh, hi. May I ask how you got my number?"
"Oh, I got it from your brother. Hehe."
"Oh okay. Well, I'd love to meet you there. What time?"
"Right about now. Kay?"
"Okay. See you."
"See you."
Mythily stood up and shrugged on his jacket, then shoving his phone in his pocket he walked out of his room and into his mother's office where she was working on things for college.
"Hey mom," he said, "I'm gonna meet my friend at the old library, alright? I'll be back in about an hour."
"Alright, honey." His mother said, not looking up from her work. "Have fun and be safe."
"Alright, mom."
And with that, he left.
He grabbed an extra house key on his way out and made sure to lock the door behind him. The old library was luckily pretty close to his house so he started walking.
He walked down the street, letting the rain fall on his face and dampen his chocolate brown hair. He walked the two blocks to the library then cut across the lawn to the big front doors. The front doors were really rusty and heavy and difficult to open but he still did it. He walked over to the fiction section to browse till Ricki got there. He enjoyed fantasy books the most.
He eventually found a book that looked interesting and sat down on a couch to read.
He got about halfway through the novel when he heard a cart of books crash to the floor.
"...Ricki..?" He asked timidly, but he was only answered with silence. He put the book down and got up, anxious to go investigate. He walked to where he heard the crash and found the knocked over cart of dusty old books. He looked around for any sign of someone but couldn't find anything.
He decided to ask Ricki where she was. He got out his phone and texted her.
"Hey, Ricki where are you?"
"Ricki?"
"Yo??"
There was no answer.
He shoved his phone back into his pocket, slightly annoyed and returned to the couch and the book. He continued to read till he felt a sudden sharp pain in the side of his head. He gently rubbed where it hurt then noticed a small rock lying on the couch. He picked up the rock and inspected it right before another rock hit him in the same place. He looked in the direction the rock came from and glared. He couldn't see anyone.
Before Mythily knew what was going on, a big, fluffy scarf wrapped around his face and pulled him down off the couch. To his surprise, he didn't hit the floor but landed in someone's arms.
"R-Ricki?" He stuttered, pulling the scarf off.
"Not quite." The person replied.
Mythily recognized that voice. He got up and got a better look.
"Reggie! What are you doing here??" Mythily questioned. His older brother, Reggie, grinned and put his scarf back on.
"I heard you telling mom you were gonna meet someone here and decided to come check it out. Looks like you've been duped, lil man!"
"You're right, I probably have. But, you didn't have to throw rocks at me." Mythily folded his arms.
"Relax, it was all part of my brilliant plan!" Reggie said.
Another cart of books crashed to the floor. Reggie stood up.
"We should probably go. I saw a sketchy dude walkin' around outside." Mythily nodded and they left.
They were nearly home when they heard a trash can fall over behind them. They turned around to see who did it but couldn't see anyone. When they turned around to continue walking, there was a man wearing a white cloak standing in front of them.
"Hey, who are you?" Reggie asked.
The man didn't answer, but lifted his hand instead.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Reggie said as he took a step forward.
Reggie and Mythily stiffened as they heard a massive crunch behind them. They turned and saw the trash cans had been crushed into small boxes. And the they were floating.
"Are...you...serious...?" Reggie said, taking his hands out of his hoodie pockets.
"Mythily, get home."
"Wait, why?" Mythily asked
"Trust me." Reggie replied.
Mythily had never heard his brother be this serious so he did as he was told. He ran around the block and into his backyard. He was about to go tell his mom but Reggie ran in, slamming the door behind him before he could.
"That was quick." Mythily said, rather surprised.
"Uh, yeah." Reggie said then went into his room and slammed the door shut.
Mythily checked the time on his phone and it was already 10:30 pm. He decided to go to bed, he was pretty tired.

Mythily woke up to the smell of perfectly cooked bacon. He got up and went to the kitchen, preparing himself for a mighty breakfast. He sat down at the table with a plate and smiled at his very tired looking mother. His mom smiled back as she put a few strips of bacon on his plate. He thanked her and bit into one of the excellent pieces of meat.
"Reggie's gone to Fencing and when he gets back he's going to bring you to his friend's house with him." His mom said, adjusting some of the bacon. € "He wants you to help them with their band practice. Once you're done with that he's going to bring you to the North Diner for lunch then you can come home and do whatever. I'll be working on my report all day. You're a lucky ducky." Mythily nodded, his mouth too full to talk.
Mythily didn't mind having practically his whole day planned for him. This all sounded pretty fun. He just wished he could have gone with Reggie to fencing practice. He thought his brother looked so cool fighting other people with swords. Reggie was very athletic. He was in a fencing club, on a football team, rugby team, cricket team and even an American football team.
The part of the day that Mythily was not excited for was going to Reggie's friend's house. He liked the band and the music they played but he didn't actually like Reggie's friends much. They just rubbed him the wrong way. There were 4 of them. Jenna, Ruby, Tanner and Andrew. They were all a year older than Reggie but they were all still good friends.
Jenna was the kind of girl you would see being followed by a small clan of other girls. She had long blonde hair and always wore a pink headband. She was the lead singer. Ruby was the girl that was always hiding in the shadows, pretending to cast spells and curses on people as they walked by. She had pitch black hair, that wasn't naturally black, and wore large amounts of mascara and eye liner. She played the bass guitar.
Andrew was the class clown of every single class at his high school, even if he didn't attend that class. He was always making jokes and playing pranks. He had red hair and freckles. He played lead guitar. Tanner was the person you would have bet 20 bucks that he had been blackmailed into being in the band. He was very neat and tidy, with perfectly styled black hair and fitting, glasses. He was always carrying huge books, including a dictionary, around wherever he went. He wore nice shirts with ties and you would have never guessed he was in this little band. Mythily was actually okay with him. He played the keyboard. Reggie played the drums.
He finished up his breakfast and prepared for the day ahead of him.
