Chapter Three

The apartment was above a book store that looked old and abandoned. Except for the girl at the counter reading a book. It was a brick building on the corner, mushed in-between two other buildings. Thana pushed the doors open, the place smelled of damp wood and books, mixed with coffee. The smell was actually quite pleasant, and the place had a cozy feel to it.

"Welcome to Rainy Days bookstore! I'm Penny if I can help you with anything just let me know!" Penny practically squealed with joy. Her hair was blue and pink down to her chin, with brown eyes. Penny's face was a bit pudgy like she still had baby fat, and she was about a foot and a half shorter than Thana.

"Yeah, how do I get to the apartment upstairs?" Thana asked staying put.

"The stairs are in the back of the shop you can't miss them trust me. So what's your name?" Thana lifted an eyebrow. "Just because I have the key and a note with the name," Penny explained quickly.

"Thana."

"Has a nice ring to it, here you go. So I'll see you around?" Penny asked smiling wide.

"Sure, later," Thana said taking the key and walking to the back of the shop. The lights were dim and the shelves were overflowing with books. Thana was staring up at the books, walking to the back, she was sure this was a fire hazard.

CRASH!

Thana slammed into a walking stack of books, hitting the hardwood floor. The books went flying, landing on top of them. Thana popped up from the stack of books, ready to kill the person.

The boy scrambled up, "I'm so sorry. Are you okay? I didn't realize we had a customer, usually..."

"Usually don't have customers," Thana interrupted.

"Yeah well no, um again I'm really sorry." The boy seemed nervous or embarrassed, Thana couldn't tell.

"Anyway I'm not a customer, I live upstairs."

"Oh welcome then. And I'm Silas, nice to meet you." Thana didn't realize who he was, she wasn't prepared for this at all. Silas had dark brown hair, with bright green eyes. He was about the same height as Thana if not taller.

"I'm Thana, I just got here though so I'm going to go settle in," Thana said quickly. She wasn't trying to screw this job up and, this wasn't a good start.

"Alright, see you around, Thana." Silas gave a big goofy smile before picking up the books. Thana stood awkwardly for a moment, watching Silas pick up the books. She sighed setting her bags down helping Silas pick up the books. "Thanks!" He yelled walking to the front.

"Sure," Thana said quietly. She walked to the back to see a winding iron staircase. Penny was right you couldn't miss them.

She went up to the stairs to a hallway with dark wood-paneled walls and old light fixtures on the walls. Thana went for the door at the end of the hallway, opening it to an open living room with windows looking out over the street. The dark brown wood flooring was scuffed from years of ware down. The walls were an off white, the kitchen was small with mocha colored cabinets and white countertops. Thana walked to the first door in-between the kitchen and living room. The room was a small bathroom with yellow tiled walls, a sink, a toilet, and a green-colored tub. She opened the door at the back of the kitchen to a bedroom, the carpet was a burgundy color, with white walls and windows letting in bright light. Thana sat her bags on the old dusty bed, pulling out Silas's folder.

The photo was a school picture as he smiled wide, his green eye's bright. She set the photo aside going on. Thana was studying when the phone Lucifer gave her beeped.

You are enrolled in West Lake high school. You start tomorrow at 7 am. :) - Lucifer

Thana groaned at the thought of attending high school with a bunch of human kids. The teens Thana has come across, most she wanted to kill, were just a bunch of clueless idiots. She had never attended school before and, she wasn't excited to start.

Thana checked her watch, eight o'clock. She flipped through the pages looking at the places Silas might be now. The bookstore, home or with his girlfriend. Thana stood going back downstairs to the bookstore, where she found Penny still at the counter.

"Hey, Thana!" Thana was beginning to think Penny almost squealed every time she talked.

"Hey, do you know where to get a bite to eat?" Thana wanted to know where Silas might be if he's not home.

"Well, most teens hang out at Don's diner or, some go to River town pub. Want some company? We're about to close." Penny smiled her blue and pink hair looking wild. Thana didn't think it was such a good idea but, she didn't know the town either. Thana sat there thinking it over in her head. "I know where Silas is."

"What?" Thana asked her voice sounding a little sharp.

"I know where Silas is."

"I heard you. Why are you telling me this?" Thana asked, folding her arms over her chest.

"My grandma says she has this six sense thing and, that I seemed to have inherited this sense as well. Its a really strong gut feeling that just tells you something about this person. I feel what you need in my jellies." Penny said placing a hand on her heart, looking happy as can be.

"Your...jellies?" Thana asked not wanting to know where her jellies were.

What's wrong with this generation?

"It's what my grams said when I was a kid and, just sorta stuck. Do you want my help or not?" Penny put her hands on her hips, she resembled a child having a temper tantrum.

"Okay, " Thana said against her better judgment. Penny was lucky Thana, could have snapped her in two. Thana almost did for a minute, just because Penny annoyed her a little.

They walked outside, Penny started for her car. She stopped when she noticed Thana wasn't following. "Are you coming?" Penny asked sounding like her happy self.

"We can't walk there or something?" Thana wasn't sure about the beaten car, looking as if it would fall apart.

"Driving is faster." Penny went to the car unlocking the doors. She smiled waving Thana over. "He's not as bad as he looks! Brad is pretty reliable, except that one time on 137th Street. I think I fixed it!" Penny giggled as she got into the beater, starting the engine. Thana rushed over ducking into the car.

Penny blared Bowling for Soup, singing the lyrics off-key. She tapped the steering wheel, driving through the empty streets. Thana had her arms crossed over her chest as she stared straight ahead. She watched as the headlights swerved every now and, then when Penny released wheel.

They pulled up to a two-story dark red brick mansion that was gorgeous. Complete with a huge white porch tall white pillars and, high windows. Music thudded from the house as green and purple lights flashed.

"Where are we?" Thana asked as they climbed out of the car.

"Daniel Clifford's house, he's the rich kid of the school. Dan's a little nerdy but the fact that he can throw parties makes him popular." Penny smiled as she bounced along. She wore a t-shirt that had a unicorn on it jumping over a rainbow with blue jeans and, purple sneakers. They looked like yin and yang, walking into the party.

The music was ten times louder inside and the fog rolled around the room. The scene itself was intoxicating. Some teens were dancing in the middle of a living room while others talked loudly over the music drinking alcohol. Penny grabbed Thana's hand pulling her through the crowds to the backyard. It was even crazier in the backyard as people jumped into the pool splashing around.

Thana spotted Silas over by a table with a group of people laughing. He wore a black t-shirt, with dark blue jeans, and grey sneakers. Silas was smiling with a red cup in his hand and his other arm around a blonde-haired girl. Thana started thinking of ways he could kill his girlfriend, a car accident, stabbing, maybe with a book.

"Thanaaaaa?" Penny sang next to her, pulling Thana's attention away from Silas. "That's his girlfriend Claire, she's a sweetie."

"Oh, " Thana said a little disappointed that she wasn't a b with an itch.

"Let's go." Before Thana, could protest Penny, clutched her wrist pulling her to the group at the table. "Hey, Claire! Hey, Silas!" Penny squealed once again.

"Penny, you made it!" Claire slurred her words a bit as she threw an arm around Penny's shoulders.

"Good to see you Penny, Thana." Silas smiled nodding once towards Thana. Thana nodded in return but didn't say anything.

"Claire, this is Thana," Penny said pointing a finger towards her. Thana stared Claire up and, down from her black heels and mini and to her blue eyes and freckled nose. She was gorgeous, Thana would give her that.

"This is the new tenant! It's nice to meet you!" Claire said pulling Thana is for a hug.

What is with these humans and their need to grab me! Thana thought as Claire almost crushed her. For someone so, little Claire was quite strong.

"It's um, nice to meet you too," Thana said when Claire released her.

"Where are you from?" Claire asked a smile on her thin glossed lips.

"New York, you ever been?" Thana yelled over the music.

"Can't say I have," Claire shrugged her shoulders. Claire started chatting with a brunette haired girl who came up, ignoring Thana.

Thana's eyes shifted to the red cup in Claire's hand, she smiled at her idea. Concentrating on the cup, gradually it tipped without Claire's knowledge. The sticky mixture of soda and alcohol spilled onto the front of Claire's white shirt.

"The shirts ruined!" Claire pouted looking as if she might cry.

"It's okay, we'll have it cleaned," Silas said softly placing his hands on Claire's shoulders. Penny grabbed some napkins on the table dabbing the shirt.

"Let's go to the bathroom real quick," Penny said. Claire nodded her head holding out her shirt. Penny and a few of the other girls that witnessed the scene followed Claire to the bathroom. Thana hung back, waiting for them to be out of sight.

"She seems...nice," Thana shrugged her shoulders, side glancing at Silas.

"She is, I've known her since we were kids," Silas said looking down at Thana. A small smiled played on his lips.

"How long have you two been together?"

"Going on three years. You want a drink Thana?" Silas asked a little loudly in Thana's ear. His warm breath made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.

"Sure, thanks." Thana and Silas went to the bar, where a guy danced wearing shades.

"Let me get two!" Silas spoke over the loud music. He handed Silas two red cups, handing one to Thana.

"Follow me," Silas said walking towards a pond that was a few yards out. They walked in silence through the mushy grass, cups in hand. The moon was full and bright, lighting up the field. Crickets and frogs echoed with the faint sounds of the music behind them. The moonlight glistened off the water as they stepped out onto the dock.

"What are we doing here?" Thana asked looking around as Silas stared out at the trees.

"Look there, " Silas said whispering pointing to a tree close to them. Thana's eyes adjusted quickly in the dark, as she spotted the owl flying around. "It's a barn owl, hissing owl or death owl. They have many names." Thana watched the heart-shaped face owl, the death owl. Death, she remembered she had a job to do.

"It's cute, but I should get going we have school tomorrow," Thana said heading back to the party.

"You're attending school?" Silas said catching up.

"Yeah, do you know West Lake?" Thana asked already knowing the answer. The music started getting louder as they got closer.

"That's where I go actually," Silas beamed. The laughter and loud talking grew louder the closer they got.

"So then I'll see you tomorrow?" Thana asked as she kept walking.

"Bright and early, " Silas said. He stood awkwardly not knowing if he should hug her or not.

"Silas!" Claire called from the poolside.

"I'll see you tomorrow Thana, " Silas turned going back up to the party.

"Tomorrow, " Thana avoided the party and the crowds as she crowds home. Silas was something else, she'd give him that. Claire might be an easy target for him. If they party a lot they could get into a drunken accident.

He cannot be harmed, Thana remembered. That put a damper on that plan.

She'd have to study him more, she needed to find his weak points. Humans usually had lots of weaknesses. They were fragile, breakable and that's just what Thana would do. She was going to break Silas, one way or another.
