Chapter Six
Thana woke up to a knocking on the door. She sluggishly pulled open the door to find Silas. He smiled looking Thana up and down. Silas stood there with his hands in his pockets asking, "you look comfy, are you ready?"
"Yeah just let me throw on some shoes," Thana said slipping on her tennis shoes.
"Might want to fix your ponytail there, sleeping beauty." Silas pointed at Thana's lopsided, frizzy, red-haired ponytail.
"Right, " Thana said just letting her curls hang down. She grabbed the backpack and headed out with Silas.
"Nicholas Sparks?" Silas asked making their way through the store.
"What?"
"The book that was laying on the couch. Do you like it so far?" She had completely forgotten about that.
"It's alright, " Thana shrugged her shoulders as Silas opened the car door for her.
"I feel like they always have good messages, throughout the whole book. They're books someone can connect with." Silas started driving turning up the music. "Sorry, I love Blink-182," he almost shouted over the music. Silas began singing loudly and off-key to the song. He stumbled over the words he didn't remember, tapping the steering wheel.
Thana cracked a genuine smile and laughed.
Once the song was over Silas turned down the music and Thana said, ”I've never heard a Blink-182 song." Silas's mouth dropped open hanging there for dramatic effect.
"Well feast your ears! You are about to be blessed." Silas turned up the music dancing in his seat. He sang along to every song as Thana bobbed her head humming. She wasn't a monster completely, she could appreciate some good music. By the time they pulled up to Silas's house Thana, was humming along.
"Nice house, " Thana said looking at the white porch that ran across the front of the house. Big windows were placed on each side of the white door. The farm style house was a light grey with two stories. There was a garden in the front with a mixture of different colored flowers.
"Thanks, ready to meet the folks?" Silas smiled sitting there with his door open. Thana nodded opening her door, not knowing what to expect from these people. Were they annoyingly kind? Did they smile too much?
Heaven forbid if they were anything like Penny, Thana thought.
The inside looked lived in, with books and magazines lying on end tables a few toys on the floor. A knitted blanket laid over the back of the couch with the light shining over the open living room the place felt homey.
"Mom?" Silas called out as he grabbed Thana's hand pulling her down the hall.
"In the kitchen, sweetie!" A woman's voice sang through the house. Silas's mom stood at the stove humming a tune as she cooked. The smell was a mixture of sweet and a little spicy, making Thana's stomach growl. "Someone's hungry, " Silas's mom said.
"That would be, Thana, " Silas said. She turned around a wide smile set across her olive skin toned faced. "Thana, meet Mrs. Calloway."
"Nice to meet you, ma'am, " Thana said.
"Oh please, call me Diane. I'm old enough in age where I refuse to be called ma'am." Diane's smile went all the way to her amber-colored eyes. Thana genuinely smiled, something about Diane brought her comfort.
Get a grip, Silas might have to kill her. Most of the time good people have many sins in their closets, Thana thought.
"It's nice to meet you, " Thana said shaking Diane's hand.
"Anyway, " Silas interjected. "I'm going to show her some culture in movies. She hasn't seen The Breakfast Club ever." Silas said taking some food.
"Oh no. Well, I see you two have a lot to do better get to it, " Diane smiled.
"Call us when dinners ready."
"Okay, sweetie, " Diane said.
"It was nice meeting you, " Thana said before they went upstairs to Silas's room. The room was simple with a lighter shade of blue on the walls, and limited furniture. There was a bed, desk with things scattered on top, and a flat-screen on the wall with game systems underneath. Thana gazed at the ceiling seeing the artwork his mother did. It was breathtaking. She wondered what it was like to look up at that painting every night. Everything else about the room screamed teen boy.
Definitely, how I pictured a teenage boys room except the painting, Thana thought.
"Welcome to my humble a bowed, you can make yourself comfy on the bed. Or I can grab you a chair if you'd like?" Silas asked as he went through the movies on the TV. Thana sat on the bed it wasn't as comfy as the one she had in Hell but, better than the one in the apartment.
"The painting is amazing," Thana said breathlessly. "Your mom seems...nice, " Thana said as she pretended to wipe off something on her sweats.
"I told you, " he smiled. "She is... Ha!" Silas said as he stopped searching the movie channels. "You ready to have your life changed?" He smiled with his green eyes shining.
"Forever hopefully, " Thana threw out a giggle. It always felt weird to flirt with the targets for her. Thana was never romantically interested but, they never resisted her fake charm. Silas seemed no different. "Why is this one of your favorite movies?" Thana asked.
"The Breakfast Club is realistic and unrealistic. After you've watched it, we can get in a discussion about it." Silas smiled as he sat on the end of the bed away from Thana.
Well, aren't you a good boyfriend. Thana thought as the movie began to play.
Of all the other things she could be doing for Hell, she's babysitting. Thana was trying to ignore the movie, filling her thoughts of gore.
Somehow the movie caught her attention. Thana watched intently, cheering for the teens on the inside.
By the end of the movie, Thana was clutching the pillow sitting on the edge of the bed. "Dinner's ready!" Diane called from downstairs. Thana shook out of her trance getting up to pace the room.
"Did you like it?" He asked with a smirk on face.
"Like it? I loved it! Is Saturday school really like that? Because I would definitely join." Thana talked fast a smile on her lips.
She faced Silas' reality hitting her. Thana would never be a teenager like in that movie. Silas wasn't Julius, she couldn't confide in him. Though Thana had her doubts about how much she could tell Julius now. She had a job to do, that's all this was. Information on Silas though she wasn't sure the movie would help.
"Your mom called us for dinner we should get going, " Thana said pointing towards the door.
"Right, " Silas said still smiling. His bright green eyes never leaving her face.
They walked downstairs where Diane was setting the table. A man that resembled Silas sat at the head of the table. His father she assumed. A boy sat next to him with light brown hair and thick black-rimmed glasses on his face. Thana assumed it was Silas's little brother.
Thana had a choice to sit by the kid or Diane, she chose closest to the kid. Silas sat next to Thana.
"Did you like the movie Thana?" Diane asked putting food on the kid's plate.
"Yeah, it wasn't bad, " Thana faked a small grin.
"Thana this is my husband Charles," Diane said resting a gentle hand on his shoulder. "And my youngest son Otis."
"Nice to meet you. You and Silas met at school?" Charles asked.
Thana took a breath before answering. "I live above the book shop which is where we first met. But we also go to school together."
"Are your parents living with you?" He asked yet again.
"No, they travel for work a lot." Thana lied not wanting to talk about her mother. Silas didn't mention her mother's passing either and she was thankful for that.
"Hmm, " Charles said.
If only you knew what my father and I do for a living, Thana thought. A small smile appearing on her face.
"Do you eat chicken Thana?" Diane asked changing the subject.
"I eat all meat, " Thana smiled holding back a laugh. Diane scooped the chicken mixed with bell peppers and other vegetables onto Thana's plate. Her mouth watered at the smell of it.
After everyone was ready to eat, Diane sat down taking one of Charles and Silas' hands. Silas and Otis both offered a hand to Thana. Hesitantly she took their hands, watching them now their heads. Thana felt like she was about to be sacrificed rather than the chicken. She dipped her head watching Silas from the corner of her eye.
"Dear Lord..." Charles started.
Thana never prayed before, the thought never crossed her mind. The only time she heard anyone pray was right before she killed them.
Thana watched Silas as Charles talked. His dark brown hair falling in his eyes, how peaceful Silas looked. This was his everyday something Thana never had. From birth, she was taught nothing but her loyalties to Hell. Thana imagined her mother might be someone like Diane.
Someone like Diane could never love someone like Lucifer, Thana thought.
"Amen, " Charles said lifting his head everyone following his actions.
Thana started taking a few bites of food when someone tugged on her shirt. She looked over to see Otis grinning up at her. "I like your red hair, it reminds me of fire. Fire reminds me of camping. Have you ever been camping?" Otis talked really fast it took Thana a moment to process everything. She's never dealt with kids. Even when she was a kid she wasn't a normal one.
"Thanks, kid and I've never been camping," Thana smiled taking another bite of her food.
"Next weekend we're going up north, a family trip we take every year," Diane said with a smile. "Would you like to come?" Diane asked graciously.
"Thank you, " Thana said pleased with the invite. "I would love to." She would take this trip to do her investigation. Hopefully, she could get this job wrapped up soon.
Humans could be so...annoying.
"It's settled, " Diane said squeezing Charles's hand.
Diane continued to ask the boys how their day was. Thana sat back watching the family interact. If she was raised in Hell by Lucifer could she of had a normal family? Was her mother like Diane with an infectious smile? Would she ask her how her day was, plan for a family vacation? Thana gazed at Silas and Otis as the laughed. Charles even smiled showing the crow's feet around his eyes. They were a happy family. Something Thana had to change.
As they finished Thana followed Silas to the sink to rinse off dishes. "So I should get going home, " Thana said folding her hands in front of her.
"Right, I'll drive you." Silas smiled as they walked to the door yelling, "see you later, " to his parents.
In the car, Silas changed the music from Blink-182 to an upbeat pop station. "Do you know what to bring when you camp?" Silas asked eyes on the dark road.
"No idea."
"Pack a bathing suit the water is too cold but there's an aquatic center we go to. I'll have my mom make you a list." Silas said biting his lower lip glancing at Thana from the corner of his eye.
"Okay, " Thana nodded before facing Silas in her seat. "Do you know what you're going to say in your poem about me yet?" Thana fake a wide smile, her red curls bouncing around.
"A ginger so sweet though clueless to amazing music and movies." He teased as he smiled at Thana.
"That doesn't rhyme I hope you know." Thana faced forward in her seat as they neared the bookstore.
"He never said it had to rhyme," Silas said sticking a finger in the air. "You'll see when we have to present it. Now do me, " he grinned bouncing in his seat.
"Still working on it. Teacher's pet might be part of it, " Thana smiled sideways at Silas.
"I see, fine don't tell me," Silas said as he slowed the car to a stop.
"I'm not. I'll see you tomorrow with that list." Thana said popping open her door.
"Yes, you will. See you later Ms. Hollis, " he smiled his green eyes sparkling in the moonlight.
Thana nodded before climbing out of the car and going up to her apartment. The afternoon with Silas was a rush. Different kind of rush then she was used to.
She looked at the book by the couch, Silas's smile in her mind. She needed to speed this process up. Thana wasn't sure how to get the goodie-two-shoes to live up to murder. Maybe Lucifer was hoping she'd fail. Scrap this daughter out for a new one.
Thana fell onto her bed frustrated with this whole assignment. As far as she could see there wasn't anything bad about Silas. There had to be something, there was always something. Thana kept running scenarios in her head as sleep came. Drifting off into bliss.
