Chapter 65
Come with me." Aiden ordered. "Now."
He took a step to leave just as the murmurs got even worse.
"It looks like something did happen."
"He's upset with her."
"She must have done something to irate him."
"God, I always knew that Paris was trouble. What could have happened this time?"
Hearing all the students whisper among themselves made her really afraid, for some reason, she could feel a cold chill pass through her spine. She slowly turned to Aubrey and Noa.
"What's wrong?" Aubrey mouthed but how was she supposed to answer a question she didn't even know the answer to? What was wrong? She had no idea what was wrong? The last time she spoke with Aiden, it was all butterflies and fireworks, it was perfect. She was sure she didn't do anything this time to upset him since then.
She was stalling and Aiden was getting really impatient. He stopped walking and drew a deep breath, raising his head in the air for energy. He had to calm himself down a bit. He knew he didn't need to make any decisions that could turn around to hurt his family. He was done tolerating her and everyone else. He turned immediately and stormed back to her while Anne-Marie was still having a hard time wrapping her head around what was happening. He lowered his gaze on her hand and grabbed it without thinking about anything else. He held on as tight as he could that it made Anne-Marie wince in pain. He was hurting her and it looked intentional.
"I didn't stutter." His cold voice made her heart skip a beat and he started to pull her away before she could even get over the shock of what was going on.
Noa, Aubrey, Asher and Harry went after them immediately and so did a whole number of students too. Everyone was confused and curious. They were dying to know what was going on. Anne-Marie could barely find her balance with the way Aiden kept pulling her behind him without much care for if she was walking or crawling.
"Welcome to Davenport airport your highness-"
He walked past the airport warden that tried to at least show her respect, aiming directly for the VIP section of the waiting room and causing a whole lot of other people to notice what was going on. He had a lot of them standing up from their seats to see. Everyone was surprised.
"Aiden," Anne-Marie tried to stop him but his hold on her was too tight. "Aiden slow down," she kept trying to pull his hand away. Her wrist was getting numb and it was hurting a lot too. "Aiden, you're hurting me."
The door to the VIP section was open. Aiden stormed inside, pulling her in too and throwing her further in the moment he did. She almost fell if not that she had no respect for gravity at that point. However, she managed to hit her side on the edge of the table she had made contact with. There were about ten people in the room, he didn't count.
Noa and the rest rushed in too, including Elijah.
"Everybody get out." Aiden instructed as the older people in the room stood on their feet to watch what was going on.
"Your highness," Asher walked further in, with a dashing look of surprise on his face. It had been a while since he saw Aiden in such a state before, they almost never did.
"Stay out of this Asher." Aiden didn't even bother to look at him. "Take the rest and leave. I want to be alone with P-" he froze. He couldn't. He couldn't even bring himself to call her that. He scoffed. It was frustrating, really frustrating. Asher turned to Anne-Marie, he could see how scared she was becoming as she had herself bended over, holding on to her sides that hurt like crazy from colliding with the table. He slowly turned to Aiden who had his eyes on her.
Aiden looked around the room. Why were they still there? Didn't they hear what he just said? Didn't he ask them to leave?
"Didn't I ask you all to leave?" He asked them, scanning his eyes around them all. "I said get out! Now!" This time he yelled, everyone was forced to listen.
"What's wrong with him?" Noa asked as she and Aubrey slowly turned away and started to walk out of the room, taking one last look at Anne-Marie and hoping she was going to be okay alone. Asher hesitated for a second but he found himself turning too the moment Harry reached for his shoulder. The other people in the room started to walk away as well and so were the other students. No one dared defy him. Elijah signaled the guards and they knew what they were supposed to do immediately.
They went outside and closed the door behind them. They stood guard in front of it while Asher, Aubrey, Noa and Harry stood right in front of them, glaring even though the other members of the crowd were disbursing. There was nothing to see anyway.
Aiden wanted to make sure. He had to make sure everyone was gone and Anne-Marie watched him. She was so nervous to know why he was acting that way.
"Aiden?" She took a step towards him as she noticed how he puffed air into his cheeks and raised his hands to his waist. "Aiden, did something happen?" She wanted to know. If something was wrong, she wanted to at least be the one to calm him.
Aiden chuckled sarcastically. He couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe how good she was at lying and pretending so well. It was hilarious. He raised his eyes to the ceiling, making sure he had the right words but he didn't even know where to start.
"Aiden, if something is bothering you," Anne-Marie took another step towards him, rubbing her wrist to let blood flow through it again. "You can tell me-"
"Why is water wet?" He finally lowered his gaze back to her.
Anne-Marie froze. She refrained from taking another step immediately.
"What?"
Aiden was fighting hard within himself. He really wanted to believe it, to believe that there was a chance that all of it was a lie, that Elijah had probably been mistaken. That way, he could protect his heart from being torn into bits. He could protect himself from the realization that he had developed accidental feelings for a liar and a fraud. Why was water wet? Anne-Marie could remember that question. He had asked her the same question at the royal pool the other day. Why was he bringing that up again and what did it have to do with what was going on? He drew a deep breath.
"Why-is-water-wet?"
"Aiden, what sort of a question is that-"
"You would not reply me with a question." He made sure his words were as clear as crystal. Anne-Marie heard him loud and clear. She gulped hard. "I asked a question and you will answer the way you normally would have. Why-is-water-wet? Say it!"
How she normally would have? Was he talking about Paris? Was that a question Paris had an answer to? What was that? Like a secret code between them? Why was water wet? Was there even an answer to that?
Think Anne-Marie think.
She was getting so scared and confused. Anyone could see it. Why was he suddenly talking about water and wetness and Paris? Did he know something?
She could feel his gaze burning an invincible hole through her skull. He was waiting for an answer and he was waiting as patiently as he could be. There was no way Paris would have forgotten, amnesia or not, she was never going to forget the answer to that. He didn't think she would. He hoped she didn't because if she did, it would mean he was right about everything. It would mean the person standing in front of him wasn't who she claimed to be. She wasn't Paris.
"Wh-wh-why water is wet?" Anne-Marie was stammering and gulping too much saliva at the same time. Her legs and hands were literally trembling for no reason.
Think Anne-Marie, think.
Abel must have mentioned something like that to her before. She just had to think deep for the most reasonable answer.
How was she supposed to think of anything under pressure like that and with the way he was glaring at her? Aiden was losing his patience. Did she really not know?
What was this? What game was he trying to play? Anne-Marie drew a deep breath. What was she so scared of anyway and why did he think he could intimidate her like that? She was having a mild panic attack. She took a deep breath and then another one.
"Aiden-"
"Why is water wet-"
"God, Aiden please, stop this, you're scaring me."
"Why is water wet Paris?!" He yelled at her.
"I don't know. Aiden!" She yelled back. It was too much pressure. "I'm sorry but I don't know how to answer what you're asking."
"What?"
"How am I supposed to know? It's water, it just is-"
Aiden scoffed. He nodded his head. It was clear now. He understood it clearly. He could see everything clearly. He was such a fool. He was such a fool to even consider that there was a possibility Elijah wasn't saying the truth.
"Aiden, can we just go back to the rest of the class?" Anne-Marie asked. She couldn't believe he pulled her all the way there to ask her why water was wet? What on earth was that? "Our plane leaves in twenty minutes-"
Aiden turned to Elijah immediately and reached for his gun. He pulled it out and pointed it at Anne-Marie as soon as he turned.
"Your highness-" Elijah took a step forward and then froze while Anne-Marie held her breath in shock. She couldn't believe it. She was numb all over, she couldn't move. Was that a gun? Like a real gun? Was Aiden pointing a real gun at her? Why? What did she do?
"Who are you?"
His voice was cold. Very cold and it was piercing through her heart. She was freezing already and her legs were trembling even more.
"Aiden-" she stammered. She could barely get her words straight or together. Her head was spinning just looking at that gun.
Who was she? Did he just ask her who she was? What was going on?
She swallowed hard.
Did he know something? Did he already find out? Was that why he asked the water question? Had she already given him a reason to believe she was an imposter unintentionally?
Now she was even more scared.
This was not a joke or a prank. This was not Aiden in his feelings, it was real life. It was really happening and there was only one explanation as to why.
Aiden knew.
He knew she was hiding something or at least he suspected. She knew she couldn't give him what he wanted. If he had suspicions, the best she could do at that point was try to convince him that she was speaking the truth, that she had nothing to hide.
Anne puffed air into her cheeks. She needed to if she wanted to calm her nerves a bit. She was so tense as it was. Her hands were trembling too. Just how much did he know? How much did he find out.
"Aiden, Aiden what do you mean?" He wasn't going to pull the trigger. He wouldn't kill anyone, even if he knew the truth. Not with everyone outside or so she thought. She slowly raised her hand and placed it on her chest. "I-I-it's me, Paris-"
Aiden cocked the gun and lowered it to her foot. He pulled the trigger and shot at the ground immediately. Anne-Marie screamed and fell to the ground.
Anne-Marie wasn't the only one that screamed. Everyone that had heard the gunshot did and that included the staffs at the airport.
"Has he lost his mind?" Harry whispered to himself as Asher hurried to the door. Aubrey too.
"Get out of the way." He warned the bodyguard who kept his eyes focused on thin air to even pretend to be bothered by him. Aiden's instructions were clear and they knew they had to obey him with their lives on the line.
"Are you just going to stand there?" Aubrey yelled at them. "What if someone gets hurt?"
"Get out of the way while I'm still being nice." Asher went on just as the manager and head of security with a few staffs in uniforms hurried as fast as they could to the scene while the crowd multiplied.
"W-what's going on?" He asked. One of the guards got out a badge. It had the royal crest on it, he showed it to him.
"The prince has ordered everyone to stand back and not interfere."
Anne-Marie was trembling from head to toe. Her head was spinning and her legs were trembling uncontrollably to even help her. She was finding it hard to breathe, too hard to breathe. Aiden raised the gun's aim to her forehead this time, making sure to aim correctly. He didn't care. He knew he had to get the truth from her. He had to hear her confess with his own ears.
"Next time, I won't miss." He warned her, ignoring the fact that she was literally panicking beyond her control. "Who-are-you?"
Anne-Marie watched him. He had his hands on the trigger. Was he really going to shoot her? At that point, it was like she didn't know him anymore. It was like everything she thought she knew about him the past few weeks had been replaced with this version in front of her.
"Why are you here? What do you want?"
"Aiden-"
"Who ordered you to impersonate Paris Vutron?"
Anne-Marie had tears in her eyes. She could barely think straight with him over her like that, threatening and scaring her. The past few years of her life, she had done all kinds of jobs including stunt doubling, but never had she ever had a real loaded gun pointed in front of her like that but that wasn't even what hurt her. That wasn't even why she was scared. She was scared for him. She was scared of him knowing the truth. This was the moment she had been running from for the past few months. The moment she wished and prayed would never happen. The moment she prayed he never had to know or listen to her confession.
She knew just how much the truth would hurt him, she knew what it would mean to him to know that just like everyone else, she had deceived and betrayed him. He was never going to think of her the same way again and that terrified her. She was scared not because of herself, but because she was going to hurt him. The truth was going to hurt him.
Elijah exhaled and walked to her with the envelope. Anne-Marie watched him slowly as he approached her. He stretched it towards her and she hesitated at first.
"Take it." Aiden ordered her. Her hands were trembling everytime he spoke to her but she swallowed hard. It was already happening anyway and the doors were locked. It wasn't like she could run from it. He had a gun aimed at her head and she wasn't even the real Paris. All his life, Aiden had never missed a target so she knew the moment he fired that gun, it was going to kill her. She was a no one, all she was was a commoner, no one was going to care if she died especially since it was treason.
With her trembling hands, Anne-Marie slowly reached for the envelope. She looked through the corner of her eyes, just to have a glimpse of him but he had his eyes focused on her.
"Open it." He instructed and before she knew it, she was doing all he asked her to, just like a puppet. She brought it all out. Pictures of Abel, pictures of Abel and Mickey, pictures of her and Abel, their old house in crystal lake, financial records and statement of huge sums paid into her account by the Vutrons, and most importantly, a DNA test result. How on earth were they able to get samples of her and Oliver's DNA? They were nothing alike, there was only a 2% match. She was caught, there was no way around it, Aiden knew, He knew everything. All her fears had come to reality. Her fantasy was over and now, she was starting to see things for how they really were, reality. There was no point lying about it anymore.
"I-" she started. "Aiden, I can explain."
"Is it true?" He asked her, not even bothering to drop the gun. "Is everything in that envelope true?"
Anne-Marie turned to him. She needed to get him to listen to her. She needed to at least get the chance to explain to him.
"Aiden, Aiden I just need you to listen to me,"
Aiden scoffed. Listen to her? Did she just say she needed him to listen to her? She needed? She wasn't even in a position to need anything.
"I can-" Anne-Marie voice broke. "Let me explain everything please." She was so so terrified. Elijah exhaled. Finally, she wasn't denying it. She couldn't, not when proof was right in front of her. There was no point denying it anyway, Anne-Marie knew that. Aiden waited, he needed an explanation but Anne-Marie didn't even know how to give him one. Where would she start from? Anything she said could add to the evidence he already had against her. She couldn't even bring herself to look him in the eye.
Aiden narrowed his brows and gaze on her. He understood perfectly. She wasn't going to say anything or defend herself at least so it meant Elijah wasn't wrong.
"You lied to me,"
"I'm sorry,"
"You deceived me and made a fool out of me,"
"Aiden, I didn't mean to- I was only trying to-" Anne-Marie had tears falling from her eyes and still didn't have the right words to say. She could see the look on Aiden's face. It didn't look like he believed a word she said. How could he? When her entire identity was a lie?
"How dare you?" He glared at her. "How dare a mere commoner like you plot treason against the royal family of Breton? How dare you try to deceive the king, to deceive the throne, to deceive me?"
Anne-Marie sobbed. No matter how she tried to control herself, the truth was out. Faster than she had ever imagined and she was hurt just as much as he was. She had no idea what to say or do. She was scared at how much she had hurt him. She kept crying.
"In the end, you were just like everyone else, who am I kidding? You're the worst of them all." He lowered the gun slowly from her. He was already too weak by her confirmation to even threaten her with it anymore.
"Aiden-"
"How much did they pay you?" He glared at her. Anne-Marie's tears tripled. "How much did they pay you to do this?!" He yelled at her at the top of his lungs, causing Anne-Marie to tremble even worse.
Asher kept glaring at the bodyguards who stood firm at the front of the door. They wouldn't make a move, not even after they heard the gunshot. Aubrey exhaled to show her frustration. She had her heart in her mouth and couldn't breathe properly with all the anxiety in her heart. She couldn't help but worry.
"Nothing would happen to Paris right?" Noa wasn't asking anyone in particular. "The prince wouldn't hurt her right?"
"Of course he wouldn't." Harry said, slowly turning to her. He was just as shocked and confused as they all were. "I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding. The prince wouldn't hurt her, she's a Vutron and also the future Queen. The King won't allow it. They are both fine, they have to be-"
The door opened immediately and they all turned as they watched Aiden storm out of it, paying no attention to the crowd in front of him.
"Your highness," Harry took a step forward but Aiden just walked past him and everyone else. They could see how pale his face was, how angry he looked. He was upset, obviously upset. Asher slowly turned back to the room which was left wide open. Anne-Marie was on the ground, trembling like she had just seen a ghost. Whatever it was that had happened between them inside that room must have terrified her a lot. It was like she was struggling to breathe and couldn't stop her hands and legs from trembling so much.
"Oh my, is she okay?"
"What on earth happened?"
"Gosh this is so scary."
"Paris!" Aubrey yelled as she pulled Noa, dragging them both into the room as fast as she could at the sight of the state Anne-Marie was in. They hurried to her immediately and bent over to where she was while everyone else got out their phones. Harry turned to the crowd immediately.
"Okay that's enough." He stood in front of the door so he backed and blocked them from seeing anything going on inside. "No pictures. Show's over, we've all got a plane to catch." He was encouraging them to leave. "Leave please."
Everyone obeyed, they had to. One by one they lowered their phones and started to leave the scene.
"Can someone explain what just happened?" Asher was just as numb but he managed to let himself turn to the airport staffs behind him, narrowing his gaze on the man in a suit. He was about to say something when he felt a hand squeeze his shoulder.
"I will." Elijah said to him. "Please, this way," he gestured to the side, encouraging them to go with him. The men looked at themselves first to be sure they were in synchronization with each other. They went away with Elijah eventually.
"What was that?" Noa asked Anne-Marie. "What on earth happened? Did the prince just shoot at you?"
"Noa?" Aubrey whispered her name. It was obvious that wasn't the time to ask questions. Anne-Marie was still so shocked as it was. Noa swallowed the rest of her words just as Aubrey turned to Anne.
"Are you okay? Can you stand?"
Anne-Marie slowly turned to her.
"I've got to go." She said slowly, in almost a whisper.
"Go?" Noa asked her. "Paris, look at yourself, where can you obviously go in this state?"
Anne-Marie tried to pick herself from the ground. Her sides were still hurting because she had hit it on the table earlier but she managed to pull herself up.
"Paris, where are you going?" Aubrey got up immediately and grabbed her arm to stop her.
"I need to warn them."
"Warn who?" She slowly turned to Aubrey. "Paris, look at you, you're trembling, literally, you can barely even stand on both legs, how can you walk in this state?"
"Aubrey's right. Everyone saw what happened, the moment you leave this room looking like this, the whole world is going to know." Noa said.
"No you don't-" Anne-Marie drew a deep breath. "You don't understand. I can't let him go to the king."
"Go to the king? What for?"
"Did anything happen between you and the Prince Paris?" Anne-Marie turned to Noa immediately. "Paris, if there's anything we can do to help, anything at all, you know you can tell us."
A drop of tear fell from Anne-Marie's eyes. She couldn't believe it. She couldn't believe she was about to lose everything when she had just started. Aiden finding out was going to ruin everything. It already did. The Vutrons could abandon her and Abel and that meant his treatment was going to end. If the King found out, she and Abel could lose everything. She could lose her life. How did everything get so bad so fast? She slowly turned to the door. Harry and Asher were standing there, watching her. They were just as shocked as she was, very shocked. Her breathing got even louder, like she was struggling to and her heart race tripled. She slowly lowered her gaze to her hands. They were trembling, so much and she couldn't stop it. She couldn't help herself.
She fainted.
