Chapter 42
Ring!
Aiden lowered his head so he could fit right into the door of the little store. He couldn't believe it, he couldn't believe he let Anne-Marie talk him into any of it. Sneaking out of the palace was one thing but changing his entire look was another thing entirely.
Not that it was anyone's fault. He had too many flashy clothes, it was going to be really hard remaining unnoticed in any of his clothes. The idea was to stay away from public eyes.
Local stores.
It was just like he had imagined...average, except he had never for once imagined himself in an average store before. There were no designers, no special display rooms, all the items were just lined up on really long hangers all around the store. He watched Anne-Marie pull him towards the T-shirt section with a bright smile on her face.
She missed it.
Actual shopping on her own without anyone tailing her around the store and recommending outfits for her that she didn't like. She missed the simple stuff like buying things on sales.
She ran ahead as fast as she could down the long aisle the moment she spotted a set of white T-shirts in the middle row with the inscription I love Breton in red with a heart emoji right beside it. It was exactly what she needed. She pulled two of them out of their hangers and hurried back to Aiden who just stood there, watching her with both his hands in his pockets.
Her smile widened as she raised the shirts to his face and swung them in excitement.
"How about this?" She asked him.
"Matching shirts?" He raised his brows.
Anne-Marie frowned a little bit as she took back the shirts so she could look at them again, they were matching shirts, why didn't she think of that? She scoffed
"I- I didn't even think of that." She told him. "I'm sorry, I'd just take something else-"
Aiden grabbed one of the shirts from her immediately and held on tightly to it.
"There's no need for that." He looked away to avoid the smile on her face that came after wards. She couldn't help herself, she was so excited. He turned back to her and scoffed.
"You're excited about this aren't you?"
Anne-Marie nodded her head.
It had been a long while since she walked down the normal streets of Breton. She missed every part of it. She missed riding down the road in her bike, she missed the breeze on her face too.
"Very very." She told him.
Aiden exhaled and turned back to the shirt, He couldn't believe he was actually going to change into that. Anne-Marie took a quick scan around the room and let her smile widen when she saw exactly what she was looking for. She hurried to the face cap section and pulled two black ones out. She wore one immediately right before she hurried back to Aiden who raised his gaze to meet her when she got close.
"Here." She stood on her toes so she could manage to reach for his hair but she wasn't tall enough. She stretched further until she was and pulled his hair back before she placed the cap on it. Aiden heard her chuckle right before she grabbed his arm and spun him around to face the huge mirror behind them.
"The perfect disguise." Anne-Marie said, looking into the mirror too. Aiden slowly reached for the cap. It looked really nice on him. He was almost unrecognizable.
Anne-Marie let out a huge sigh.
"I'd just pay for these then we could change into them." She tapped him on his shoulder right before she turned and started to walk down the aisle as fast as she could.
In twenty minutes, they were both changed and out of the store. Elijah walked away from the car just as the other bodyguard hurried to grab the shopping bags from them.
"Your highness," he said with a huge smile on his face. He couldn't believe it, he couldn't believe the version of the prince he was standing in front of. Aiden looked so ordinary, so...normal.
"You can barely recognize us isn't it?" Anne-Marie asked him.
"The prince looks so regular." He looked even happier than Anne-Marie was. "He could be walking down the road and no one would even recognize him. Woah," he turned to Anne-Marie and raised his thumb. "You're a hundred percent Miss Vutron."
Aiden scoffed and rolled his eyes as he watched Anne-Marie raise her thumb to the guard too.
"Your highness," the seriousness in Elijah's tone brought them back to face him. "Are you sure being out in public like this without the queen's knowledge or the full protection of the royal guards is a good idea? Especially in disguise? You don't look-" Elijah took his time to examine Aiden from head to toe. The way he saw it, the look was belittling his reputation as prince.
"The plan is to stay low key and attract zero attention to ourselves Elijah," Anne-Marie told him. "There's nothing to be scared of, no one is going to recognize us in these outfits and since they wouldn't be able to, they can't hurt us either."
"Besides, that's why you both are here isn't it?" Aiden asked him. "Tag behind us quietly with the car and protect us. Don't make it so obvious that you're royal guards."
He clicked his tongue and exhaled.
"Oh," Anne-Marie's excitement grew when she narrowed her gaze on the huge food umbrella beside them with smoke rising from the grill machine. "Rabbit ears."
She grabbed Aiden's hand immediately and started to race towards the umbrella. Her mouth was watery all of a sudden just staring at the huge slice of properly food displayed on the tray.
Aiden had no idea what those were, he kept staring at them in such a confused manner. They looked really good but he had not seen anything like that all his life. Did people really eat that? Rabbit ears?
"Rabbit ears?"
"They are not real rabbit ears."
Anne-Marie said not even bothering to look at him, she had her eyes focused on the grilling slice in front of her, rubbing her hands together. "We call them rabbit ears because they are made to look like real rabbit ears. Woah, I've not eaten this in weeks."
It was exciting.
Seeing the details of her old life excited her. This was her only chance to do whatever it was she loved to do. She didn't know when she was ever going to be able to be out in the open like that again after this. She grabbed a stick from a neat bowl and poked a tiny slice into it. She turned to Aiden to feed him with it immediately.
"Here, you should taste it."
"What?" Aiden stared at her. He forced a smile on his face. "I don't think-"
"We are pretending to be normal just tonight remember? Go on, it's really tasty."
"We should probably get that tasted first just in case-"
She pushed it into his mouth before he said anything else. Aiden shut his mouth with it immediately and started to chew on it before he knew it.
Wow.
His eyes widened immediately. It was amazing. One of the best things he had ever tasted and Anne-Marie could see it in the way he turned back to the umbrella in surprise.
"You like it don't you?"
"Rabbit ears are one of the best meals in Breton," the old lady behind the grill said with a huge smile on her face just as Aiden looked at her, still amazed with the food in his mouth. "It's been a beautiful snack for the people of Breton for ages."
Anne-Marie nodded her head in approval. She knew all that.
"Are you two visitors?" She asked them.
Visitors?
Anne-Marie shook her head.
"We just don't come out often." She said. Of course it was going to be weird they didn't know Rabbit ears, it was one of the most popular food in Breton.
"That's a first," the woman said. "The only people that don't know about Rabbit ears are either Visitors or the Elites of Breton. They don't think it's healthy food." The lady chuckled, Anne-Marie forced a chuckle too. "What do those rich people know about healthy foods?" Her laughter was hilarious and loud too. "They barely look healthy. How could they when all they eat is vegetables. They spend millions in expensive restaurants just to eat vegetables and little steaks. Silly rich people."
Anne-Marie's laugher faded as she noticed how Aiden was glaring at them both, repeating the question "what was funny" over and over in his head with his lips curved downwards to show his disgust. Anne-Marie cleared her throat and turned back to the lady.
"We'd just have two please."
She nodded.
Anne-Marie took out her purse and got out a few notes from it. She gave it to the woman and got a bag from her in return.
"Thank you,"
The lady waved at her as she and Aiden turned to leave.
She loved it, the gushing night air on her skin, the beautiful lights and busy streets, she loved the busy streets. The night was indeed beautiful, one of the most beautiful nights ever or was it because she hadn't seen a lot of nights like that ever since she moved to the Vutron mansion?
Everything was beautiful, just like she remembered. She loved seeing couples kiss under the stars or walk down the street holding hands, she admired them, they reminded her of her perfect fairy tale, a tale that didn't involve all those crazies happening in her life at that moment, a fairy tale where she was actually with the prince of her dreams and Abel of course, that was her happily ever after.
She was happy, happy that she got to do all that again, it was truly refreshing, walking down the street like that was truly refreshing. She paused when she got to the front of the toy shop. She could see a small crowd standing in front of the store with a man talking to them at the top of his lungs like he was advertising something to them. Anne-Marie felt an invincible force pull her towards the tiny open store just as she pushed herself through the crowd, Aiden too, he wasn't going to let her go out of his sight.
There was a sign board in front of the store with the words, "be your lover's Cupid, shoot an arrow on all three targets and win a huge teddy."
Woah, the teddies right behind the board had to be the biggest she had ever seen, she was amazed. She narrowed her gaze to the tiny bald man standing in front of the crowd with his eyes on the couple beside him. They were standing in the middle of three targets, the little lady had about one arrow left in her hands while the man beside her looked like he was struggling so hard with the bow and arrow with it, he couldn't get a perfect shot no matter how hard he closed an eye. He shot the arrow and it barely flew five centimeters towards the target before it landed on the ground.
"One more shot!" The round man announced just as the rest of the crowd murmured nervously among themselves. They all had their hearts in their mouths for them especially when the lady handed him the last arrow.
Anne-Marie scoffed when he failed to hit the target again and everyone sighed to show their disappointment.
"That's cheating." She whispered to herself. Aiden slowly turned to her. She didn't even know she was talking out loud. "Who on earth would possibly know how to shot an arrow in this day? It's not like we are in the tens, who uses an arrow nowadays anyway?" She folded her arms, staring at the target right before she drew a sharp breath, "He's obviously making the game difficult on purpose."
Aiden slowly retraced his gaze back to the targets and to the arrows as the man and his girlfriend slowly stepped away from the box.
"It looks like they don't win anything after all." The man announced as he turned to face the rest of the unimpressed crowd, smiling cheekily. "Who wants to play again?"
The crowd didn't look like they were motivated to. They all looked like they were too scared to. No one was stepping forward. Who would? they probably didn't know how to shoot an arrow either.
"No one?" The man looked like he was really excited that no one was stepping forward.
"You shouldn't have made the game so hard," a lady said from the crowd.
"That's right," someone else said. "How on earth are we supposed to know how to shoot arrows?"
"Aye," the man said to them. "Don't be like that. It's only the rules of the game. I've had a few couples win before, it's not totally impossible."
"Yeah but all three targets with just six arrows? That's impossible. No one can get all three targets even with seven arrows, not even if they were in the military."
"He can!"
They all turned to Anne-Marie, following her really loud voice, Aiden turned too, how on earth was she pulling his arm up in the air? He widened his eyes at her as she slowly turned to him and smiled.
"Me?" He mouthed in utmost surprise,
Anne-Marie nodded her head.
"It looks like we have a volunteer." The round man said as he hurried to Anne-Marie and Aiden. "It's mister-"
"Aiden."
Anne-Marie turned to him. "His name is Aiden, Aiden-Cree."
What?!
"Oh, Aiden," the man chuckled nervously. "would you like to win a teddy for your girlfriend?"
"Girlfriend-" Aiden scoffed. "Who said she's my girlfriend-"
Anne-Marie poked him in his side with her elbow, Aiden reached for it immediately, that hurt a lot. Anne-Marie turned to him and blinked her eyes three times.
"Baby," she said, "I really want a teddy please." She blinked her eyes three times and then pouted. Aiden eyed her. What on earth was she doing?
Cut it out.
He mouthed but she pretended like she didn't see him. She turned to the man.
"He'd do it." She announced.
"Great." He clapped his hands. "Please step forward, into the box." Anne-Marie made the first move and Aiden followed reluctantly, scratching his brows. He couldn't believe any of it. The man walked back to them with a bow and six arrows. He handed all the arrows to Anne-Marie and gave Aiden the bow. Aiden took it.
He let out a weak breath when the crowd behind them started to cheer them on. He lowered his gaze to Anne-Marie, she had her eyes on him, smiling sheepishly. He exhaled and took the arrow she offered him. He placed it in position, inside the bow and turned to the closest target. He lifted the bow up to his eye level.
It had been a while he ever practiced with a bow and an arrow. He wasn't sure if he still had a good aim.
Aim Aiden, all you have to do is Aim, it's just like when you're shooting a gun remember?
He pulled the bow string and then let it go. Everyone gasped as they watched the arrow fly to the wooden target. It hit it right in the middle and stuck right there.
"Woah." Anne-Marie chuckled as the entire crowd clapped loudly. Aiden reached for another arrow and turned to the next target, he pulled and aimed and then let it go, it hit the target again and the cheers got even louder.
Aiden had to admit, it felt so good, getting all that encouragement from total strangers, Anne-Marie was really surprised herself. She never knew he had it in him. He picked another arrow and turned to the last target.
It was the furthest one but he managed to aim carefully. He stretched his arm and aimed, taking away every distraction and focusing all his senses on the target in front of him. He shot at it and it hit the target.
"Yes!"
He threw his hand in the air in triumph as Anne-Marie jumped in excitement, just like the rest of the crowd. He did it! He got all three targets.
The round man couldn't believe it. He had his eyes wide open in surprise as he stared at the three targets. How on earth was it possible? How did he get all three with just three arrows?
"Looks like we have a winner." Someone from the crowd said. Anne-Marie turned to the teddys, she needed to make her choice. There was a lady standing there like she was the one in charge of delivering the gifts to their winners.
"I want that one." She pointed at the biggest white teddy among the rest.
It had been a really long night. The toy shop wasn't the only place Anne-Marie and Aiden had visited, they stopped by the claw crane machine where Anne-Marie had won a small teddy for Aiden after trying five whole times until she was out of coins. Not that he needed the teddy or her efforts, she just wanted to pay him back for getting her that big teddy she was already in love with.
Things had escalated the entire night and they had barely even kept track of time. The amusement park was next. You should have seen the excitement on Anne-Marie's face as they rode the Ferris wheel. It was just like she remembered from her childhood, it was super amazing even for Aiden even though he kept a straight face all through the ride, but lost his entire mind and soul in the house of terror. It was a sight to see. He kept screaming and holding on to Anne-Marie's arm whenever he got the chance. He screamed so much and so loudly that it made Anne-Marie really irritated that she couldn't stop laughing even as they got out of the house.
Aiden walked behind her, watching her laugh so hard with a hand in one of his pockets, still trying to get his heart to beat steady.
Was it really that funny? Did he make a complete fool out of himself back there?
Anne-Marie turned to look at him, trying to push back the rest of her laughter as he got closer to her.
"Oh my," she placed her hand over her mouth.
Aiden squinted his eyes.
"What?"
She pointed at his head.
Aiden raised his hand to his head immediately. Anne-Marie was right, his cap was gone. He whiled around in an attempt to find it just as Anne-Marie hurried to him as fast as she could to help him.
"Where did it go?"
"It must have fallen in the house of terror."
Aiden let out an exhale. Now what was he going to do?
"Isn't that the prince?" He raised his head to meet the two girls with cotton candies in their hands, they stood staring at Aiden for a long while with surprise looks on their faces.
"Oh no." Aiden said under his breath.
"What is the prince doing in an amusement park?" One of them asked the other.
"I think you just got recognized." Anne-Marie whispered to him.
"I told you it was going to be impossible not to get noticed didn't I?" He whispered back to her
"What do we do?"
"I have no idea, you're the one with a lot of bright ideas today."
"Oh my gosh, it really is the prince." The first girl said and then whirled around.
"She's going to scream isn't she?" Anne-Marie whispered to Aiden,
"Probably."
"Everyone, it's prince Aiden!" She yelled at the top of her lungs followed by her friend's loud scream.
Everyone around them turned to them immediately. Aiden grabbed Anne-Marie's hand and started to run as fast as he could with her while the girls ran right after them.
Anne-Marie kept looking behind her to make sure they were far from them even as Aiden ran with her out of the park but they weren't entirely so far, the mob was still after them, screaming Aiden's name on the top of their lungs.
Where was Elijah and the car when you needed them? Oh that was right, they didn't leave through the front gate. Aiden increased his speed until they got to a corner, right in front of a mall. He stopped to catch his breath. Anne-Marie too.
They could barely breathe after all that running.
"Why on earth-" Anne-Marie tried you say but her heart was still racing fast. "Why do you have so much fans?"
"Well," Aiden answered, breathing heavily. "I did warn you didn't I?"
Anne-Marie placed a hand over her chest just as she turned back. The mob were getting really close. She turned back to the mall, a scooter bike had just parked in front of them and the rider got down quickly from it.
Anne-Marie hurried to him quickly while Aiden raised himself to watch her.
"Hello, hello sir," she stopped the older man who turned to look at her surprisingly. "Do you mind if we borrow your bike please?"
"M-my bike?"
She didn't have the patience to explain any further. She grabbed her purse and got out a few notes. That had to be enough. She gave it to him immediately and took the key from him without even giving him a moment to register what was going on.
"Thank you so much."
Anne-Marie hoped on the bike.
"What are you doing?" Aiden asked her in a confused tone as he walked closer to her.
"What does it look like? I'm getting us out of here."
She started the engine and then turned back to him.
"Well, don't just stand there, hop on."
"You want me, to get on that?" Aiden narrowed his gaze back to the old bike, there was no way he was going to do that. Anne-Marie was about to say something when-
"Over there! It's the prince!"
On a second thought, Aiden jumped on the bike and took the helmet Anne-Marie offered him immediately. He didn't have any time to think it through, Anne-Marie was right, they just needed to leave first. Anne-Marie started the engine and rode of.
