12 : George Watson
Life is a really interesting concept. Sometimes it hits hard and sometimes, small things become the reason for peace and happiness. Life takes twists and turns, but it does not stop at place, life goes on. So do the stories and the legends of the remarkable people.
I, George Watson, never thought to write William's story as a book. But the way he faced his complicated life, it was fascinating for me. People live for decades, but books live for ages. So, this was my way to keep his memories alive.
~~
After his meeting with Erika, William felt more relaxed and comfortable. Amon drove him back to the EVA main building and William, without saying a word, went into the Director's office. Steve, after his arms were healed, started his paperwork again.
"Knock"
There was a single knock on Steve's office door. After some time, the door opened and William entered the room. Steve's eyes turned towards him and a smile appeared on his face.
"You returned." Said Steve. "How was your date?"
"For Heaven's sake Steve."
"It's fine to sometimes...not be serious." Steve said, laughing at him. "Anyways, how is Erika?"
"She's fine," said William. "She was quiet at the beginning, but in the end I saw her more relaxed."
"That's good,"
There was a smile and a different charm on William's face. He sure was happy that day. He walked around the office and looked at the papers pinned on the walls. He observed, analysed and observed again.
"You look happy,"
"I feel better," said William. "That meeting sure helped a lot."
Steve stood up from the chair and kept all his paperwork aside, he removed his reading glasses with his now-healed arm and walked towards the big office window.
"You should take some rest," Said Steve. "You can head back tomorrow morning,"
"I was about to head back to the room."
"I'll drive you back to the residential area." Said Steve, with a friendly tone and a smile. "You can wait for me outside."
"Sure."
William, with a faint smile, accepted the offer and after waiting for a little more time, walked outside the room. He turned around and closed the door behind him. As William walked outside the room, Steve turned and walked at the end of the big window.
With a two click sound, he removed the lock and opened the big window. As the windows opened, winds blew inside making his big cloak wave in the wind. He closed back the windows.
"You can come out," Said Steve, in a slightly serious tone. "He must be gone by now."
As he said, a strange person appeared from the shadows in the corner of the room. She was dressed in black, from neck to toes. And a black mask with only a window for eyes.
"Dressed in black? That's something new." said Steve,
"It helps for hiding in the shadows," said the woman in Black. "Especially when hiding from William."
"What do you think about him?"
"He's doing fine," said the woman. "I saw him fighting against Sallos, a little careless here and there...just like when he was small."
"Yeah, old memories--"
"Coming to the point." interrupted the Woman.
"You know Maya," interrupted Steve. "You can't hide this forever, you should not. Just talk to William, stop hiding from him." he said with a serious tone.
"I...I'll think about it."
"Good." replied Steve. "Now, coming back to the point."
"I have been observing the Curse belt for some time now." Said the Woman. "There are some interesting things happening in these past few months."
~~
William quietly waited in the waiting area. The night was spreading over the sky. For him, it was a fine day. After waiting for a while, Steve came out of his office and walked towards the waiting area.
William, looking at Steve, stood up and took a step ahead.
"You took some time to come out of the office,".
"I had to entertain a guest." replied Steve. "They were in a hurry, so they left."
As if that will convince me, Steve. Thought William and faked a normal smile on his face.
"You said you'd drop me to my room,"
"Yes, about that." Steve smiled. "The car must be waiting outside, let's move."
As ordered by Steve, a blue Pierce-Arrow was waiting outside the main building of EVA. Looking at Steve and William arrive, the driver got out of the car and opened the back door of the car with a bright smile on his face.
They both entered the car and the door was closed. The blue car, elegantly, moved across the whole EVA area. Passing through various sub sections in EVA, and also showing William, how big is this place. In this short journey, nobody talked a word. Steve was looking at the road while William opened the car window and enjoyed the wind flowing through his hairs, making them wave in the air.
After some time, the car dropped William at his room. A small, but beautiful single storey house. Just what William always wanted. William, with a calm face, said Steve goodbye and the car went ahead.
William entered his house and walked straight towards his bed. It was a late night and the day was a little tiring. He slowly climbed the bed and turned around to see Rita was standing in a nightgown in front of him.
"Wai...what the heck!" William backed off and struck his head to the wall in shock. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to the capital to help you,"
"Does entering one's house also count in helping?"
"Yes it does." Said Rita.
Rita walked forward and climbed the bed. William, with his nervous face, dragged his body away. Rita, looking at William, laughed and sat on bed.
"I'm not going to eat you, you know."
"I never said that." replied William.
"I won't be sleeping with you anyways." Said Rita. "I'll be sleeping in the next room. Just call me if you need anything."
"Ah...sure."
The darkness of the night covered the sky and the moon ascended in the sky, spreading his rays on William through the massive window in his room. It was a calm night, after a long time. For now his mind was away from all the things that happened in Zora Village, his encounter with his mother and the incident in the capital town some days ago.
His replaced artificial leg reminded him of the incident, but he was calm. Maybe he realised, 'Life is never just a straight road. So live the good moments at its fullest.'
After a calm and relaxing night, the next day I visited William's room. As usual, I knocked on the door in our old pattern--1...1,2,3...1. To my surprise, the door was opened by Rita.
"Oh, you've already arrived." I said in surprise.
"I actually stayed here," she said with a smile. "To look after him."
"You don't trust him, do you?"
"Not after what he did back in the intersection battle." she replied. "That was the peak of recklessness."
While we were talking, William, after having the shower, came to the living room and looked at the door.
"George, you arrived." he said, looking at me. "Come on in." to which, I returned him a big smile and entered his house. I closed the door and rested myself on the sofa nearby. William went inside the room and after some time, came properly dressed in his EVA clothes. Black shirt with his sleeves rolled till his elbow, black pants. He avoided wearing a cape as he thought that was childish. He never preferred the Haori either.
"When are we leaving back to Zora Village?" I asked.
"Actually, we need to postpone it till...maybe tomorrow." Said william,
"Why so?" asked Rita.
"I, or I guess, we have to visit a place," said William. "It's a small residential area near the current Industrial area."
"Why all of a sudden?"
"Erika, the girl I met yesterday, wanted me to see that area," replied William. "She grew up there. And for some reason, I felt like she wanted to tell me something."
"So we are leaving now?".
"Yeah, so if possible,we can leave for Zora in the evening."
After a short discussion, we walked outside the house and called the car. Again, a model 41 pierce-arrow, because it's Steve's favourite, and he's a director of EVA.
We got inside the car and the car drove across the town. Back then, The capital was indeed a really beautiful town. The car passed the main EVA facility and we relaxed ourselves. The car was fairly big, I sat on the front seat beside the driver and William and Rita rested themselves on the back seat.
The car travelled through the main town, passed through many known places. The city of nobles, a busy area of 'Trader's streets', the entertainment streets, which brought back the bad memories and finally the river Auda.
River Auda was the final stop as the river bridge connects the Capital to the industrial area. The driver accepted our request to drive us to the mentioned residential area.
When we finally reached the area, I was not even willing to open the door of the car. Nobody got out of the door. I quickly closed the car window and observed. I can't even describe how terrible the situation was. The lives of the people living there were miserable, a true pain for one's eyes to even watch. Animals can be treated more well than how these people were living.
No wonder the first dark skin incident occured to the kid from this area. William thought.
Looking at the posh, shiny car, a woman nearby stood up from her place, keeping her baby aside and walked towards the car.
"Are you nobles?" she asked, looking at the window. "Are you here to take one of the other women again."
First, I hesitated to open the window, but hearing her words, I didn't realise when I opened the door and got out of the car. My curious mind understood the situation, but I wasn't ready to accept it.
"What do you mean by that?" I asked.
Oh good god! William said to himself, with a sigh. Is this why Erika wanted me to visit this place?
William opened the door and got out of the car. He was still quiet- from outside. I glanced at him and looked back at the women.
"Are you not the nobles?" asked the women.
"No. we...are not the nobles." said William, in a calm tone. "What's going on here?"
"Why should we believe that you are not the nobles?" said the woman, with a little loud voice.
"If we were nobles and if whatever you're implying is true.'' I interrupted. "Then we would not waste our time talking with you." I looked into her eyes. "Now tell me, what is going on here?"
While I was trying to ask her the situation, there came another woman, heavily breathing and the sweat all over her face. As if, she came running here. She came and without taking a breath hugged the other woman.
"They came again." she said, while tears came from her eyes. "They're taking the girls again."
My eyes widened hearing her words. What does she mean?
"Miss, where are they?" I asked, without knowing who the woman was referring to 'they'. I made my assumption for 'they' as nobles. The woman looked at me and for some reason, trusted me. She raised her hand and pointed it towards the corner of the road, where two roads intersected.
I didn't thought of taking the car. Without any second thought, I removed my coat and my body moved. I rushed to the place pointed by the women. William got into the car and it followed me to the place.
No sooner had I turned from the corner of the road, I heard a voice. The voice of women, crying, screaming, begging for help. My pace slowed while my brain examined the situation. I saw a woman, getting dragged by a man dressed in pale, with a royal symbol on his left shoulder.
Filthy Noble.
The woman looked extraordinarily beautiful, but this beauty was all wiped by the tears constantly coming from her eyes. Her clothes were torn, revealing her stomach.
My speed was slowed but I was constantly running towards the location. There were hundreds of mens, more stronger than that single noble, standing there doing nothing but just watching her getting dragged by the noble.
The woman jerked her hand and tried to run, but that noble quickly grabbed her back. His eyes were burning with anger. His hands raised for a slap. Before his hands reached her face, I rushed in and punched him in the chest, blasting him away on the door of his white and golden coloured car. One of four cars present at the place.
Our car arrived and William and Rita got out of the car. The doors of the other three cars opened and some more nobles, or the guards of the noble I punched, came outside. The situation was self explanatory. Rita quickly went forward, covered the women and removed her cape to cover the woman's body inside her torn clothes.
"What the hell do you think you are doing?" shouthed one of the noble's guards.
"Trying to control my adrenaline and resisting to kill your boss, I guess." I replied.
"How dare you!" shouted the guard and rushed towards me. William appeared from my right and landed a strong kick, throwing him away in another car.
"Don't you even dare." warned William.
Rita took the woman aside from the place and kept watching us from a distance. After William threw that guard on the car doors, I saw a fear on the other guard's face. Some guards backed by a step while others stood frozen in place.
"You bunch of imbeciles!" shouted the Noble as he stood up. He, cleaning his dress, walked forward with anger carved on his face. He looked strong with his jacked muscles, but they are worthless if he can't respect the womens.
He rushed towards me but I didn't care. As he approached me, I dodged his hands and grabbed his collar. Using his own momentum against him, I lifted him up in the air and slammed him down on the ground with a big cracking sound.
Oh lord! That noble is not standing again. Rita said to herself.
The noble screamed in pain, but he deserved it. I couldn't control my anger and punched him in the face. The noble was calm and I realised he was unconscious.
"Anyone else?" I shouted, looking at the guards.
There was a long moment of silence in the area. All the guards were frozen looking at the condition of their boss. I looked at each of them. They soon backed off and sat in the cars. Two men came forward and looked at me.
I walked a little back and they both lifted the unconscious body of the filthy noble. Soon, the cars were gone from the place. Us staying at that place felt awkward so Rita and William helped the people in the area to calm down and we took the victim woman back to EVA.
~~
It didn't take long for this news to reach Steve's ears, but it didn't matter. William wanted to talk to Steve after looking at the situation of that area and the way people live there.
We all three, Rita, William and I, entered the Director's office. Steve was standing, facing the window, looking outside. I saw the girl, Erika, sitting on the small chair nearby. As we entered, Steve noticed us and turned around. This time, he didn't have a smiling face. It was a more serious one this time.
"You all arrived," he said. "Please have a seat."
Following his orders, William walked back and rested himself on the sofa at the corner, beside the chair Erika was sitting on. I and Rita took our seats on chairs before the Director's table. No one said a word. Steve put his eyes into an old book. There was an awkward silence in the room. My head was down as I was the one to hit the noble first. William was quiet too.
"I understood why you wanted me to visit that place." said William, sitting on the sofa looking at Erika. "Thank you for letting me know."
"So can you do something about it?" asked Erika.
"I promise...I will-"
"Don't give promises which you don't know if you can follow." said Steve, with a little loud voice, interrupting William. "Anyways, how is your new leg?"
William looked at Steve and his serious face, and said : "It's strong enough to blask the strong guard on car doors with single kick."
Steve's face showed no change in his serious expression. "So you were involved too." he said, keeping the old book down.
I decided to speak. It was all my fault after all. I took a silent deep breath and put myself together.
"Steve," I said. "I was the one who started it. It's my fault."
"Do we have a misunderstanding?" said Steve. "I'm not angry with you. You did the right thing actually."
"Then why so serious?" asked William from the back.
"So...how should I put it?" said Steve. "Okay, so...the noble you hit yesterday and literally broke his bones."
"What about him?"
"He's dead," said Steve. "Don't freak out. You didn't kill him, he died during the treatment of his wounds which you gave him."
"Well, that's indirectly George killing him," said William.
"I'm afraid, yes." said Steve. "I will deal with the king, so you can relax. You'll be leaving for Zora village anyways."
We all went quiet again. We all felt a little guilty about how things worked out. Steve looked down for some time and looked back at Rita.
"Rita, will you take William and Erika for a small walk?" He asked. "I want to talk with George for some time."
"Sure." Rita replied with a single word.
They three stood up and William and Erika followed Rita out of the door. William closed the door while leaving and I was left alone with Steve inside.
After they left outside, Steve looked back at me and a faint smile appeared on his face. He was not angry at me, not even a bit. After all things I had done back in that place.
Just what is this man made of? I thought. How is he never angry, nor sad. How does he always smile?
"You can relax," said Steve, in a calm voice. "I will handle the king for now. The noble who died was a special person to the king."
"So...?"
"So the king might still chase you," said Steve.
"What should I do?"
"Leave the capital today. I'll make the arrangements." He said. "Go to Mount Himi. I know someone who will let you stay there."
I felt a little uncomfortable hearing those words. But it was my fault to begin with, so I accepted Steve's suggestion. And if it's Steve, I always knew I could trust him with my eyes closed.
"So...if you say so." I accepted. "Sure, I will leave today."
My face was down. I felt guilty and Steve noticed it. I stood up and was about to walk out of the office until Steve stopped me.
"George," He said. "Why do you think I'm sending you to Mount Himi and not any other place?"
I turned around and said, "I don't know. It's on the border of the kingdom so maybe it's more secure."
"Well, part of it is true." Steve smiled. "George Watson, your achievements are quite impressive. Plus the incident in that area showed you are worthy of my trust, you care about others." he paused for a moment. " But, you don't possess any cursed energy. Thus, it's really difficult if not impossible for you to fight against stronger curses and devils."
"Yes, I don't possess any of those energies."
"I'm sending you to Mount Himi to protect you from the king, and..." he paused. "And there might be someone who can help you. Have you ever heard the tales of people in Himis?"
I shook my head.
"They call it the power of mountains," Steve said. "The power of the freezing ice and the wilderness."
His every word was clear and filled with a sense of weight. His words felt inspiring, I was quiet but his words made me feel better. I nodded my head and took his permission to leave. When I opened the office door, William was quietly standing outside, looking down.
He probably heard everything. I thought.
He looked at me and a small smile appeared on his face. It was not a forced smile.
"I'm assuming you heard everything."
"Yes I did." he smiled again. "Good luck, Watson," he said.
"Thanks," I replied.
"When you return, we'll spar together to see who's stronger," He said with a smiling face. "And I won't hold back, like I always did."
"Oh really?...I was the one who always held back when we spared together in the past," I said, mocking him with a smile.
"Wait!...no you didn't," he made an adorable face reminding me, he's still eighteen and a half years old.
"After I return, let's see who is stronger." I said with a smile. "That's a deal."
