you don't need to run

By the time they stopped the next morning, they were nearly to Denver.

The ride was exhausting, yet again, but Josh wasn't as irritated as before. He couldn't stop thinking about that girl, or more specifically, how good it felt to murder her.

Tyler seemed lost in his thoughts as well. He simply said "oh" when he realized the sun had risen and they were stopped at some shitty motel.

"Are you even tired?" Josh asked, counting their money.

Tyler shook his head. "No, I'm good. You?"

"Me neither," he responded, tucking the cash away and reaching for a handgun.

"What are you doing?" Tyler frowned.

"What does it look like?" Josh chuckled, carefully loading bullets into the chamber.

"Right here? Right now?"

"Just put this on," Josh said, holding out a ski mask. Tyler did as he was told without hesitating. "We won't get caught, okay? I promise. I just want to cause a little chaos."

"Okay," the brunette grinned, sliding on a black hoodie. He grabbed his own gun and stuffed it in the hoodie's pocket. "Sounds fun."

They exited together, hoods up, masks on, hands linked. Josh held the gun while it was inside of his pocket, silently flicking the safety off. He glanced at his love, who had his eyes trained straight ahead. His stare was cold, lifeless even.

It only made Josh smile.

Nobody even noticed when the two entered. Not until Josh aimed and fired at the woman behind the front desk, hitting her right between her eyes.

The sound richoceted, blood splattered, and then, the screams started.

Everyone in the lobby ran for cover, and only a few lucky ones would make it out alive. Tyler's hand left his grip as the boy took off running down the hallway, gun at his side. Josh didn't have much time to pay attention because he heard somebody on their phone.

"Please help me!"

"How fucking stupid are you?" Josh asked, throwing a chair aside to reveal the man cowering on the floor.

"No! No, please! Don't-"

Boom.

More screaming, and then another shot from somewhere else in the building. The red head smiled, knowing his baby was probably having a great time.

There was crying coming from the corner. A mom, hiding behind her child who couldn't have been any older than six. The daughter was hysteric, begging for her mommy to protect her and Josh couldn't ignore the slight tug on his heart.

What kind of mother was she, cowering behind her daughter? Pathetic, really.

Josh approached the girls slowly, crouching before the child and holding his hands in the air. "I'm not going to hurt you, okay? Is your daddy here somewhere?"

The little girl didn't answer, only cried while her mom shook her violently. "Take her! Don't hurt me, just take her instead!"

A long round of shots rang out. Everyone jumped expect for Josh. He simply took the little girl's hand and pulled her out of her mother's arms.

Tyler came running around the corner, going so fast he nearly tripped over himself. "Someone called the cops. We have to go. Now."

"Take her to the van," Josh said, picking the girl up and shoving her in Tyler's arms. The brunette looked at him in confusion. "Just do it!"

Once the two were out of the building, Josh crouched before the woman. He grabbed her cheeks, forcing her jaw open and sticking the barrel of the gun inside of her mouth. She poignantly whimpered, but it had no effect on Josh. He heard the van start outside.

"You are a sorry excuse for a mother. You're a pathetic fucking coward. I can't fucking stand people like you. You deserve to rot in hell."

Boom.

Josh took off running, slamming on the gas as soon as he was inside of the van. Tyler was sitting with the girl on his lap, holding her against his chest and rubbing her back.

"Why did we steal a kid?"

"We didn't steal her, we helped her. Mom was disgustingly pitiful, told me to take the kid instead. I wasn't going to put up with that."

"Oh," Tyler hummed, pulling the ski mask off and setting it aside. Josh did the same, and also tossed his gun into the back.

"We aren't going to hurt you," he told the girl. "I promise. We might be bad guys, but we're not evil. Can you tell us where your daddy is?"

She looked up at him slowly, wiping at the snot and tears spread across her face. Seeing Josh's actual face must've made the poor girl feel slightly at ease. He didn't look so scary anymore.

"Daddy's gone," she whimpered, nuzzling herself further into Tyler's embrace. "Don't have a daddy..."

"Well, my name is... Josh. And that's Tyler. Can you tell us your name?"

It was probably stupid to tell the girl their real names, but Josh felt too guilty not to. It felt like the right thing to do.

"Emily..." she said slowly, looking back and forth between the boys. This all must've been so overwhelming for her.

"Emily, that's a pretty name. Can I call you Emmy?" Tyler asked softly, giving her a friendly smile.

"I 'unno..."

"Do you have a grandma or grandpa, Emmy?" Josh cut in. "Someone we can return you to?"

"Just Mommy..."

Tyler sighed, Josh groaned. This was not good. They needed to find somewhere safe for the kid because there was no way Josh would have her around when things went to shit.

"Listen, Emmy. Can you listen to me?"

"I'm a good listener."

"Okay, good," Josh chuckled. "So listen closely. Tyler and I are gonna take you somewhere safe, okay? We'll take you to the police department and-"

"Wait, what the fuck? No we won't, Josh, that's so stupid." Tyler interrupted, eyebrows furrowed. "She knows our names, thanks to you. We can't take her to the police."

"What the fuck do you want me to do then, huh? I'm not going to keep her around to witness everything. That's fucked up," Josh grumbled. "I'm taking her to the police station."

"Like hell you are."

"Watch me."

"Joshua William, so help me God, if you take this kid to the police station I will murder you. That's a promise."

"Scary," he muttered, grinning as Tyler smacked his arm.

"I'm serious. Can't we just... Keep her? She's so cute, and she has my eyes!"

"No."

"Josh..."

"No! I said no, Tyler. I'll drop her off at an orphanage then."

"You can't do that," the brunette argued, holding Emily closer. "She'll be stuck there and they won't take care of her."

"So give me a fucking idea then."

"I don't have one."

"That's what I thought."

🔪👻🔪

They did end up taking her to the orphanage, despite tears from both Emily and Tyler. Josh assured them both that they would be absolutely fine before dropping the kid off on the front door step and speeding off.

"That was cruel," Tyler mumbled, arms crossed over his chest. "We should've kept her."

"I'm ignoring you."

"Asshole."
