CHAPTER I | Dane
"Throw it!"
"It won't stop fucking moving!"
"THROW IT!"
The dagger spun through the air and went right through the centre of the the luminous figure, which let out an ungodly scream and began to fade into the dark like smoke.
"Finally," I laugh, walking over to where the dagger landed. It had lodged itself into the rocks behind where the figure had stood, a crack, branching out with thin veins around it. Nothing material down here was strong enough to beat the holy silver dagger.
"What do you mean 'finally'? The score is settled; three to seven, I win," Seth gives me the cocky look he pastes onto his face after every victory.
I snicker, "You definitely cheated."
"Well," a saddened expression creeps into his eyes, "As fun as harassing damned souls is, I think you should go back, brother."
"Back up to hell I go," I say spinning the dagger in my hand,
Seth starts walking backwards down the orange path he came from, "No, Dane, this is hell." He salutes then drops backwards, vanishing into the abyss before his black feathers pulled him back up.
Every time I was down here I forgot the reality of it all. After we ended our earth journey, we were split up and sent to the Gate. Hades saw hidden evil in Seth that Apollo could not so he was handed over. Seth was then appointed as the devil's little bitch, or in other words, 'assistant' because Hades took a liking to him. His life here was not all that bad, he ran errands and got to witness the creation of destruction without having to suffer pain. I felt like I belonged down there with him, fucking with the souls and watching the chaos on earth with the other demons.
At least I still had our sister Phoebe, who was up there with me, but she only has one key focus; her eyes were on every male angel in that cloud choked kingdom. Phoebe was good and pure. She was liked by everyone and even Athena offered mentorship which she quickly accepted. Unlike her, I didn't fit in and tried to find every opportunity to visit Seth, but Apollo didn't like it and definitely didn't allow it which is why I had to make sure it was a secret. He would tell me that meddling in the balance of good and evil would yield severe consequences, but all his warnings would be ignored. I need to feel some excitement, all I felt were choking rules.
I do have my wings however. They aren't like Seth's, which are like black sheets and similar to a bat's, but mine are huge, white-feathered, and powerful and drag by my feet as I walk. They help me get to places and are my only prized possession. Without them, I'd be like my earth form, but in the eternal life, which doesn't sound like a very good deal. If you successfully pass into the heavens through the Gate, you're automatically gifted wings as a reward for "being good", whereas in the underworld, they must be earned. Seth earned them almost automatically due to his position but many other demons have to follow out commands for Hades that were near to impossible. Actually growing the wings is the painful part, It takes several weeks for them to fully develop and they bud out of your skin just like growing limbs. Hurts like a bitch. Once they're fully grown, you pretty much teach yourself how to fly, but it's all worth it.
I stand at the peak of the cliff, looking up at the blinding light as demon's wings circle the entrance. I spread my wings and jump off the end. As I drop, I feel the pressure of the air push my wings up like a parachute and I beat my wings once. I hear the sound they make every time they move, so strong and loud. I head towards the ring of light, looking down at the burning, dark hell below me. Till next time, brother.
My feet touch the sleek platform and light mist cloud my ankles. I fold my wings and walk towards home. I live in a small villa by myself. It was clean and white with two small pillars by the entrance, grape vines wrapping around each. The door has no handles and only opens when I need it to. Inside is just a bed and a bathroom, all white, with floor to ceiling windows draped with white curtains. Sometimes all the white was sickening and lethargic.
"Dane!" A little boy bounds over to me, his little wings flap enthusiastically. Ezekiel is a younger angel, he follows me around like a puppy most of the time, and it seems impossible to shake him off.
"Hey Ezekiel"
He jumps up and hovers right at eye level, "Dane, where were you? Apollo was suspicious"
I feel anxious at the thought of being caught, "Is that so? And what was the cause of his suspicion?"
"I don't know but he's talking to Athena in the gardens"
Oh no. Athena is the goddess of wisdom, reason and war. If I was the topic, and Apollo and Athena were in conference, they could be discussing consequence.
"And how do you know they were talking about me?" I ask,
"Umm... well, I overheard them talking about your brother and something about havoc and earth"
"Well that could easily be about some plans of Hades' couldn't it?"
His tiny wings grew tired and he slowly lowered onto his feet, "I don't know Dane, anything to do with Seth and havoc usually links to you in some way"
"I'm sure it'll be alright," I say, mostly trying to convince myself at this point, "I'll catch up with you later, I need some rest. Hey, and stop eavesdropping, you can get in trouble," I wave and start to continue back home.
I reach my doors and they slide open. As I entered they shut behind me and I stood in the faint dark. I drew open the curtains and light flooded in. The brightness made me wince and i shut them again. The dark was more comforting. I lay on my bed, my wings pressed against my back. We don't sleep, we just rest awake until we feel restful.
As I lay staring at my ceiling, all I could think was; Fuck. I really hope I wasn't caught.
