vii. SPECIES

HUMANS

By far the most common of the people on this list, humans come in a large variety of skin tones, heights, builds and what have you. Able to possess magic, they are the most adaptable of the species on this list, often able to thrive in areas other beings wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. There is two schools for humans to learn magic: The University of Wizardry (which is almost exclusively attended by males) and the School of Witchcraft (a smaller institution largely attended by females). They are also the most likely to have children with those of other species

ELVES

Functionally immortal and often highly isolated from the rest of the world, elves tend more often than not to have pale skin, blue eyes (though green is occasionally seen as well), light coloured hair (dark hair is seen as highly unlucky) and are often slightly shorter than your average human. They are well known for their archery skills and their proficiency in magic

DWARVES

Short, grumpy and always bearded (yes, even the women), dwarves are by far the best craftsmen and the best miners you will ever find, often preferring to live underground than deal with the shenanigans on the surface. It is unclear of how long your average dwarf lives as they are very reluctant to share any details about their species

MERMAIDS

Mermaids are remarkably rare, often preferring deeper waters than those of the fairly crowded docks of Dunmai. They are usually exceptionally beautiful with voices that carry great distances and can hypnotize even the most strong willed. Their top halves are always human but their bottom halves can be extremely varied

FAIRIES

Almost giving humans a run for their money in terms of variety, fairies can range from tiny, mischievous pixies to the more human looking Fae. What is always consistent though is an aversion to iron, an inability to lie, an adept hand at illusions and a tendency towards trouble that often leads to local law enforcement having to get involved

ORCS

Tall, strong and not precisely aesthetically pleasing, orcs are some of the best fighters you can ask for. Just don't challenge them to a game of wits or say anything negative about their mothers. They have little to no patience and will only ask for assistance (or share personal information about themselves) when they view you as a 'battle brother' i.e. someone they can trust to make sure they don't get stabbed in the back during a battle

HALFLINGS

The offspring of any two different species, Halflings often inherit traits from both their parents and are more often than not half-human. Halfling is more of a general descriptive term than a species of its own and halflings are considered to be good mediators in conflicts but can, and usually will, face discrimination from certain members of their parents' species

WEREWOLVES

While lycanthropy is more of a disease than a species, many regard werewolves as separate, often treating them with hostility out of a misguided assumption that even the faintest touch will cause infection. Infection is only caused when a werewolf bites another being while in wolf form, a rare occurrence nowadays. Lycanthropy can affect any species although for some reason, humans seem to be the most affected (most likely due to a human's innate need to pet anything even remotely fluffy). Werewolves are unable to perform magic, regardless of their capabilities before hand. While in wolf form, the werewolf is in full control of their actions and the transformation is relatively painless. Werewolves only transform during full moons, the transformation being entirely involuntary. Most keep their status as a werewolf a secret
