A Change of Fate

A white-haired boy smiled softly as he rolled the cart forward, filled with the breakfast for his fellow siblings as he was tailed by a black-haired boy he knew quite well. He glanced over his shoulder at the boy and spoke,

???: I'm surprised Emma hasn't blown in here already.

???: Eh I'm sure she's making sure the younger ones are ready. That or she got roped into something childish.

The white-haired boy chuckled softly, spotting his siblings running around awaiting breakfast though he couldn't see the energetic light-orange-haired girl that always seemed to brighten the mornings for everyone. In fact, even as he rolled into the building's cafe area he still couldn't find her among the wandering children. He wasn't worried more so curious, what could have distracted Emma from her usual task of waking up the siblings for breakfast. Well... the majority of them anyway. He knew of one of his siblings that preferred sleeping t... He found his mind growing silent as he found Emma with someone he didn't expect.

???: Guess she was waking up (Y/n), Norman.

Norman blinked softly and turned to the black-haired boy, Ray. It was always nice for all of the siblings to be around but having you there was a genuine surprise. One he honestly wasn't expecting either.

Emma: Come on come on come on!

Emma gripped your wrist tightly and pulled you along, your tired (E/c) eyes glancing around the hallway for some escape though as a small pair of hands pushed at your back, you knew Phil also wanted you to eat breakfast as well. As you grew closer to the cafe you could hear voices growing louder and you were a bit nervous. You knew everyone here of course but knowing and socializing were two different things. As you finally broke out into the cafe, your lips pulled into a line as you were slightly shielded by your (H/c) locks, looking around to either see your siblings completely occupied and playing or staring at you with bright eyes as you were actually up and about.

???: Good morning (Y/n)!

???: Woah you're up!

???: Morning (Y/n)!

So many voices hit you at once as you lifted your hand to wave in a general direction into the cafe.

(Y/n): Good uh... morning...

You muttered out as you glanced around. The smiles of your younger siblings managed to force a smile to your face, though you managed to force it back.

???: Good morning Emma, (Y/n).

You glanced over your shoulder and found the other two older children of the orphanage. Norman and Ray walked out carrying and pushing the supplies for breakfast of which your stomach was confused. Your body wanted to sleep through your stomach managed to overpower you in demanding food earlier than it usually got. Typically you waited till the end of breakfast and slipped into the cafe to nibble a bit before taking the daily quizzes and finding a place to nap outside during playtime. Your presence seemed to be quite a topic today.

Emma: You better not run off!

Your vision snapped back to Emma who was pointing at you. Letting out a sigh, you rubbed the back of your neck, the sigh leading to a yawn.

(Y/n): Come on can't I just nap? It's not- O-OwOwOwOw!

Emma pounced before your could finish your sentence, reaching out to pinch your cheeks and pull them. You flailed a bit, your hands trying to pry her off your face. However, you were saved from the onslaught as someone much older appeared behind you. Her soothing voiced cooed out and managed to get the energetic girl to relent in her attack. You lifted your hands to rub at the pinched sensation when you felt a hand on your head. You lifted your gaze to look up at the ceiling, finding an older brown-haired woman wearing a kind smile. You knew her quite well actually. She was your mom in a sense. She hadn't given birth to you, but she cared for you and your siblings.

Mother: It's surprising to see you up, (Y/n). But I love that you decided to be with your family today.

Her tone was so nice and gentle that it stifled your attempts to tell her Emma and Phil basically forced you out of bed. You swallowed it back and nodded with a forced smile, moving to take a seat as you were apparently in for the long haul today.

The daily quizzes were something you despised with a passion you didn't know you could muster in your usually uninterested body.

Mother: Everyone ready for the results?

You glanced up and rested your chin on your knuckles, listening to the results you knew all too well.

Mother: Norman, Ray, Emma. Great work, you all got perfect scores!

The room went into an uproar as Emma cheered. You chuckled softly at how excited she seemed. Maybe getting up early today would be nice. Another sibling jumped up, seemingly agitated with Norman's intelligence as he demanded a game of tag. Norman decided to indulge Don as he was known as your siblings began rushing out of the room for free time while you trailed behind them, ready to find a place to nap.

Mother: (Y/n)?

You paused as Mother called after you, a few students stopping as well before moving on.

(Y/n): Yes mother?

Mother: I noticed you always get 285 out of 300 on the quizzes.

(Y/n): Ah I guess I overthink on some of the questions a lot. I'll try and do better.

Mother: Hmm-hmm... well if you keep managing to get 285 every time I'll still be happy, though I hope you're not hiding your intelligence. I wish for all of my dear children to be the greatest they can be.

You took a breath before turning to Mother with a closed-eyed smile.

(Y/n): I promise to do my best Mother.

You spoke before exiting the room, following after the trailing siblings as they moved outside. Mother on the other hand glanced at the door and lifted her hand to rest her chin on it, glancing at the door with an interesting look.

(Y/n): I just wanna nap...

Emma: Nuh-uh! you're gonna play tag with us!

Emma and a few of your other siblings pulled you over to the starting area of tag. You had shown a bit of life by getting up early and they weren't going to let you waste it.

???: Could you please play with us (Y/n)?

A soft voice filled your ears as you glanced down to a young blonde girl smiling up at you, clutching a stuffed bunny toy. Ah... curse Emma for sending the adorable siblings at you... You took a few moments before your resistance melted away and you reluctantly joined in. Emma stood next to you and smiled. You softly smiled in return before the time started and you briskly walked toward the tree line. Norman examined you closely, you were an anomaly to him. You never really played with the others so he couldn't quite pinpoint what you would do as he watched you move into the forest. He glanced at Ray to get a count of the time before running forward after the others.

Ray glanced up from his book in time to see the watch ticking away as well as the first group of disappointed children, moving to the starting area as they had been found and tagged by Norman. Exactly thirty seconds after this, a lone figure exited the tree line. A (H/c) figure emerged, letting his hand's web rest behind his head as he yawned. Norman had seemingly caught you too, that or you didn't want to play in the first place so you could nap. This continued until only one kid was left. Emma would always be the last for the games, no matter what. Ray glanced back to you and you smiled softly. It seemed like you had hand fun at least which was something you didn't seem to experience much. It was then your gaze caught Ray's. Your (E/c) eyes met his forest green ones and he could see the bags under your eyes. It was then he felt a soft chill run down his spine. Your eyes sharpened slightly, your soft grin stretching into a smirk as you seemingly held back a giggle. In a split second, it was gone as you smiled and waved at Ray before looking to the woods. Though it always took much longer than the other kids, Norman would find everyone eventually as he and a pouting Emma exited the woods and moved toward the group.

???: Good job Norman!

???: Gah I thought I got him this time!

???: He caught us so fast...

???: You almost won Emma!

The white-haired boy chuckled as he stopped for a second.

Norman: No she didn't.

Emma: Hey I could have won!

Norman: No you couldn't have. Cause someone else did.

The siblings seemed confused until Norman walked forward, the younger kids moving out of the way until Norman was a mere step away from the (H/c)-haired boy of the same age.

Norman: I never tagged you (Y/n)

You shrugged your shoulders softly, before petting Norman's shoulders.

(Y/n): There you go, you won.

Norman: I never thought anyone would hide in plain sight, let alone among those that had already been tagged. You must have known I wouldn't return here knowing only those I tagged were here.

You couldn't help but let out a chuckle.

(Y/n): I suppose I thought a little out of the box there. Better luck next time Norman.

Ray couldn't help but softly glare at your interaction with Norman. You were complimenting him and smiling but your smirk from earlier caught him off-guard and something about now threw him off too. He would need to keep his eye on you and Norman was more than intrigued by your intellect as well, though both of them would have a hard time evaluating you if you returned to napping. Emma rushed forward and excitedly congratulated you as she began to speak on all manner of things that you had seemingly been out of the loop for with your naps. The other kids also managed to crowd around you with exciting questions and words before some trickled off to play. You felt a small bit of warmth inside you as well, feeling an old emotion you had slept off for a long time as you smiled at the children. Mother looked on from the house, her eyes analyzing you as she chuckled.

Mother: Are we back to normal, (Y/n)?...
