CHAPTER 38

Author's POV

After spending some good time at their honeymoon Vikrant and Arushi were back home. When they had visited their parents their sisters had teased them till death about the lovey dovey pictures they had posted on social media.

It had been a week since they were back and Vikrant got busy with catching up on his work schedules and meetings he had missed. Even Arushi was busy catching upon the appointments and lectures she had missed. The only time they were together was when they sat for dinner and cuddled with each other in the bed. Sometimes Vikrant even missed the dinner because of his hectic schedule.

One evening when Arushi had just returned back from the hospital Rahul and his girlfriend Ananya came home unannounced.

"What a pleasant surprise. Come in Come in." Arushi welcomed them in.

Ananya and Arushi had become like soul sisters. Though they had met just a few times they had instantly connected with each other. While they sat gossiping about anything and everything Rahul became a passive speaker in their conversation waiting for his best friend to arrive.

Finally when Vikrant had arrived Rahul and Ananya had an announcement to make.

"Guys we are getting engaged this Saturday." Rahul announced after beating around the bushes shrugging Ananya to speak but when she did not budge to speak he finally spilled it out.

"What?" Arushi shrieked out in shock or maybe joy. Vikrant's eyes popped out in shock.

"Yeah, everything happened in hast so we couldn't inform you guys earlier." Rahul said while running his hands through his hair while Ananya's cheeks turned pink.

"Congratulations" Arushi jumped up from her seat and engulfed Ananya in a hug.

"But weren't you skeptical about proposing her?" Vikrant questioned Rahul while giving him a congratulatory hug.

"Yeah but you know shit happens?" he whispered but that was audible enough for Ananya to hear.

"O really...shit itseems." She said throwing a cushion at him.

The night passed by with their gossips, dinner and some fun.

As the week passed by Saturday arrived sooner than it usually did. With music, dance and lots of fun Rahul and Ananya were finally engaged.

"It was such a fun day right." Arushi sighed tiredly as she sat down to remove her jewellery and feel lighter.

"It surely was." Vikrant replied falling straight on the bed.

"Atleast remove your shoes and change Mr. Husband."

"You remember our engagement." Vikrant questioned while obeying his wife's order.

"Yes I surely do but more than the engagement what I very well remember is the cricket match." Arushi giggled and smirked at Vikrant.

"Oh god...why do you have to remember the not so beautiful things when there are many other beautiful things to remember."

"Why would I not remember it. Your best friend thought you could take my wicket right in the first ball and I suppose you too might have thought the same...hai na?"

"Of course not why would I think so"

"You know what Rahul was somewhat correct...you actually took my wicket in the first ball." A lighter shade of pink took over Arushi's cheeks as she laid beside Vikrant snuggling closer to him wrapping her arm against his torso.

"Accha ji(is it so)"

"Haan ji" Arushi replied rubbing her nose against his.

A second later Vikrant's lips found their way towards her forehead. It is always believed that a forehead peak is lot more promising than a kiss on the lips.

"Good night." Vikrant pulled Arushi closer to him and snuggled deep into her neck.

"Vikrant"

"Hmm"

"I'll miss this."

"What?" Vikrant asked in complete confusion.

"I'll miss snuggling close to you and sleeping at nights."

"Why would you miss that....neither am I going anywhere nor are you."

"In the chaos of this engagement I just forgot to inform you that from tomorrow I have night shift at the hospital. Most of the night shift duty doctors of the Burn care unit are on vacation and since I have just returned after a vacation they have appointed me there for 3weeks."

"And you did not even inform me." Vikrant said blankly a little surprised from the information he had just received.

"I was informed just yesterday and I said I forgot because of the engagement chaos. It just flashed my mind now that I wouldn't be here tomorrow night here in your arms" Arushi replied rubbing her thumb against his cheeks. She knew it was new for vikrant to not have her beside her because since the past few months both of them had stuck to each other like leeches every night.

And it wasn't that Arushi had not tried to convince the staff to opt out of the night shift. She surely did but this time the duty of a doctor was more important than that of her feelings or the duties of a wife.

"But what about your lectures? Are you going to work for the whole night and take the lectures as well? If its so then I'll sue your hospital for overburdening my wife."

To this statement of Vikrant Arushi started laughing. 'Such a caring husband he is' she thought.

"What's so funny?" Vikrant questioned with a frown. He surely was a little annoyed with the fact that he had to sleep alone and not have Arushi in his arms for 3 fucking weeks.

"Nothing." Arushi said holding her laugh a little.

"And you don't have to sue my hospital Mr. Husband. My lectures will be handled by some other professor. Only in case of any emergency I might have to take 1 or 2 classes."

"Ok"

"Lets get some sleep now."

"Not so soon wifey." Vikrant said as he rolled over Arushi in the fraction of a second and sooner both of them were drowning in the pool of pleasure.

Days were passing by in their busy schedules. On somedays they hardly even met each other. Arushi use to return home late in the mornings when Vikrant might have already left or was about to leave for work. And on somedays Vikrant returned home late when Arushi would have already left for work.

The absence of each other in their daily lives was getting on their nerves. Somedays Vikrant tried to stay late till the afternoon to spend atleast an hour or two with his love but seeing Arushi's tired state he would feel it was better for her to catch up on her sleep.

They missed each other like hell would be an understatement. The tiny WhatsApp conversations or calls did nothing to reduce the distance that was building up. It was even worse when someone amongst them shouted at the other for silliest reasons.

Just like the previous morning when Vikrant was making breakfast he got an important call. Absent mindedly he left the stove on. The call lasted a little longer than it should have and the food started to burn.

"What the hell is this Vikrant?" Arushi shouted as she walked into the house which only had the smell of burnt food and smoke coming out of the kitchen.

She rushed to the kitchen and turned the stove off and opened the windows for some fresh air. It wasn't such a big reason but Arushi was irritated enough to lash out at Vikrant.

When Vikrant walked in from the balcony after finishing his call Arushi was ready with her words.

"How can you be so careless Vikrant you left the gas on for the food to burn since god knows how long hadn't I come the house would be filled with smoke and you wouldn't even realise that the food was burning. Can't you be a little careful."

"Wohooo take a breath darling. It might have just slipped out of my mind. It was an important call I just got engrossed."

"Important call doesnt mean you forget about everything around you." Arushi stomped her foot and walked towards the kitchen.

"I am sorry yar It just went out of my mind." Vikrant said following her but Arushi was in no mood to reply to him.

On some days irritation takes over all your senses and it was one such day for Arushi.

"You dont have to do it. Just go and freshen up I'll fix this up and make breakfast for both of us."Vikrant said when he saw Arushi scrubbing the burnt food out of the utensils.

But arushi paid no heed to it and continued with her work.

"Yaar don't do this please." Vikrant said as he went ahead to backhug her.

"Will you let me do my work atleast." Arushi almost screamed banging the pan on the kitchen shelf.

Vikrant was baffled at it. For a minute he was in the thought of why was she screaming and hyper reacting for a small thing. He felt dejected with her behaviour and decided to just let her be alone.

Taking steps away from her he silently walked out of the house leaving her alone. That was when Arushi realised that she over reacted to the situation.
