Chapter 22
Danika and Olive walked through the gates flanked by the guards that remained hidden to the world around them. Much to Olive's dismay, people were watching them. She wondered if it was because they knew who Danika was or if it was because of her punching Shelly. Dread snaked it's way up her spine, causing a white hot fizzle in her mind over the Shelly fiasco. Olive was glad that she wasn't here any more, as much as she didn't want for her to be kicked out of the university, she saw it as the only option. For her to have a peaceful life here, it had to be Shelly free. There was no Shelly but the other two girls stopped them in their path. Olive didn't know their names, they were the mindless followers of one nasty cow.
'We know you got Shelly kicked out emo girl.' the blonde snarled 'You are going to pay for that.'
Olive could see the guards appear out of the corner of her eye, their ominous presence was looming over them as they stared down the two girls.
'Curtsy to your queen ladies.' one of the guards calmly spoke.
They did as they were told but reluctantly.
'Your orders were that you were not to speak to them nor approach them. Leave now or we will arrest you.'
Danika watched wordlessly as they turned and left.
'Orders mean nothing. Threaten their lives, it means nothing. Carry out the threat upon one of them and it still means nothing. What did I ever do to deserve this?'
'They are jealous.' Olive offered 'They know that you snared the king, something that they had probably wished for their own life. They can not handle the thought that you are more enticing to him than they are and if that isn't enough reason, well I guess that we could put it down to the fact that they are bitches, simple.'
The two women looked at each other and burst out laughing. They walked into their first class of the morning, to Olive's delight, it was vamp history. She would look upon her love as he taught her of this world. As Danika pushed through the door, she could feel something wrong. Looking upon the room, she could see the lesson was already underway. Her eyes looked to her watch, it had stopped completely.
'Damn it.' she hissed under her breath.
They tried to quietly slip into their seats, Phabel had his back to them and they thought he hadn't seen them. Of course he had, because his eyes always searched for Olive, he knew she wasn't here and worried for her.
'Ladies.' he turned from the white board. 'My office after class.'
'Yes professor.' they agreed in unison.
The door swung open again, much to Phabel's annoyance.
'Can I help you?' he said to the flustered young man.
'New to class.' he stuttered as he held out his paperwork.
Phabel gestured for him to move forward.
'The uh, council were delayed in approving my move here.' he said as Phabel took the papers.
'Alright Mister Connors, you are excused for your tardiness for this time only. Take a seat and do not be late ever again.'
'Yes professor.'
Phabel took out his seating chart, when he looked up he was horrified to see that there was only one seat available in this class. Right next to his mate. He watched with very controlled anger as the young man spoke to Olive and she smiled at him. Phabel cleared his throat, both of them looking at him.
'When you are ready Mister Connors.'
His eyes darted to Danika who for once wasn't whispering things in his mind. Maybe she was smitten by the good looks of the new guy. Phabel took a deep breath, knowing that the pendant would bind Olive so deep that she couldn't even contemplate taking another lover. He turned to write on the whiteboard, hoping that he could distract his destructive mind from it's negative thoughts.
'Hey, I'm Brody.' he grinned at Olive.
'Olive, this is Danika.'
'Hey.' he nodded to her.
Olive and Danika both stared at the young man. His eyes seemed so vivid, a dark brown that was so deep it seemed unnatural. Brody's hair was a complete mess, though he had intentionally set it that way. The deep strands of black were all over the place, as he turned to face the front he pulled a length of his fringe behind the heavily pierced ear. The tattoo that was sneaking out from the edge of his shirt, the leather jacket he had hung over the back of his chair, it screamed bad boy. Even the rip over the knee of his jeans was a little rebellious. Olive turned to Danika who was biting her bottom lip, a slight smirk had emerged in one corner. She mouthed oh my god to Olive who then proceeded to giggle.
'Is something amusing Miss Matheson?'
'No professor.'
'That's good to know, I'd hate to think what our king would say about you laughing at the demise of his relationship with princess Ariella Mordecai.'
Phabel returned to the whiteboard, continuing the lesson. Olive looked at Danika wondering what crawled up Phabel's arse. With a slight movement of her head she indicated exactly what had angered their professor. The handsome man beside his mate.
***************************
Danika went first, getting her 'telling off' from the professor. While she was in getting the lecture of the century about being late yet again, Olive sat outside the professors office. Brody walked past, seeing Olive waiting like she was on death row.
'Are you in trouble?'
'Uh yeah, we were late too only we weren't lucky to have an excuse.'
'Well that's no good.' he smiled, sitting on the seat beside her.
'So are you a local?'
'Yeah.'
'I'm in the international house, I barely got my approval to move here. But I made it.' he shrugged. 'I could do with a tour guide.'
'Uh... I don't know if..'
Olive could feel her heart sinking deep into her body, uneasiness coursing through her veins. Brody was incredibly good looking but there was something that was just wrong about him. She couldn't figure out what that was, but there was something odd.
'It's cool, you can bring your friend if you like, I don't mind. I was wanting to check out some of the sites, you know museums and art galleries.'
Brody scribbled his number onto a scrap of paper and held it out to her.
'Call me if you change your mind.'
The door opened, Danika and Phabel saw the outstretched hand with the piece of paper. Olive might have held reservation with the idea of being a tour guide for this new person but took the piece of paper anyway, if only to get him to leave. Phabel was livid, his mate had just accepted the phone number of another man. He turned into his office, stalking back and forth, ready to find something to break. Danika turned to the other side of the door, catching his eye. Calm down Phabe or you'll send her running. She walked out to Olive and the new fellow.
'Your turn.'
Olive stood from her seat and scurried into the room. Danika stared down at the young man, she could see there was something very different about him.
'What are you?'
'Whatever are you talking about?' he grinned.
'I'm not an idiot, what are you?'
Brody stood from the chair, his build taller than Danika. Out of nowhere her guards appeared, standing behind her like one burly brick wall.
'Just a wolf away from his home, my lady.'
He bowed with a tip of his head and then turned to leave down the corridor. Danika turned to her trusted guards, the worry was matching her own.
'What do you make of that?'
They looked at each other, confusion was running rampant.
'Not sure.' Jeff muttered. 'But we will be mentioning this to his highness.'
'He won't be happy. Especially considering that we all feel the anxiety surrounding him.'
They both nodded. Danika looked to the closed door and hoped that Phabel was keeping his temper in check. Olive was still very flighty and one wrong move could send her running.
*********************
Phabel had calmed down, but only slightly. Upon hearing Danika whisper in his mind that the young man was a dark being that was clearly able to break through the bond, he was still uneasy. If he lost Olive to a werewolf, he could never have anyone else. This was it for him. He had to be calm, he had to be nice. Otherwise he would scare her off and that would be it.
'Miss Matheson.' he turned to her with a grin 'Ready for your punishment?'
'Always.'
The bag in her arms dropped to the ground as Phabel moved to her swiftly. Olive giggled as she wrapped her arms around his neck, feeling his soft kisses all over her jaw and cheek, down her neck and to her ear lobe. He pressed her against the wood of the cabinet, kissing her desperately. One hand laced it's fingers through the hair on the back of his head, the other rested on his chest. It just happened to be the hand that had one fine ring on it. Every time she looked at it, she smiled a crazy grin. Memories flooded back to her as they kissed frantically. As soon as she had whispered her acceptance, Phabel had kissed her so hard it made her whimper with her own need. He had been such a chaste lover, gently removing the dressing gown from her body. Even though she was in nothing more than a pair of underpants he hadn't put his hands or his gaze any where that could make her feel uncomfortable. He pulled back the bed sheets and helped her into bed. When he had put the lights out, he found his way to her embrace under the sheets. Again he was a true gentleman, wrapping his arm around her but never touching her intimately. His hand remained on her stomach all night long. Olive longed to know him better, she ached for his true touch but she knew that some things were worth waiting for. And wait she would have to do, no thanks to the unexpected arrival this morning. She inwardly sighed as their kiss ended, their time would come.
After Olive left, Phabel locked the main door and walked briskly to the locked door in his office that sat behind his desk. No one knew of it's contents, no one dared ask a professor of what his or her office might hold. But within the tiny room was one large rock wall. Phabel punched in the code for an old friend's residence. The door swung open to the sound of children yelling as they ran around the back yard.
'Phabe, long time no see.' Finn chuckled.
'Hey Finn, I need you to check up on someone for me.'
'Always here for business, never to socialise.'
Phabel followed Finn through the entry of his house, past the guards that stood at the door and into the main part of the kitchen. The smell of freshly baked bread pervaded his senses, Phabel looked at the loaves resting on the kitchen bench. One of the children was kneading the dough for her mother, under her careful tutelage. He greeted them with a friendly smile, passing through to the front of their residence. Finn and Phabel hadn't always gotten along but in recent years they had moved past any lingering doubts about each other and become good friends. Finn was the son of the king of Askara'velmanti, the werewolf realm. He flopped onto the lounge, gesturing for Phabel to join him.
'So who has managed to annoy you?'
'His name is Brody Connors, ring any bells?'
'No. Are you sure he's a wolf, because Connors isn't exactly a wolf name.'
'It's the name he has used to register at the university.'
'That may be so but I can assure you that Connors is not a wolf name. He has either used an alias or he is a hybrid that has taken the non wolf name. Did he look wolf?'
'Kind of.'
'Sounds a bit suspect to me Phabe, I think I might sit in on one of your classes to meet this Brody Connors.'
Finn frowned at Phabel.
'So what's the deal then, why so interested in him? Surely you've had wolves in your class before.'
'He has managed to break through a bond that I share with a human.'
'Oh my stars, has Phabey found himself a girl?' Finn laughed hard.
'Yes, Phabey has found himself a girl, has managed to give his binding necklace to her, somehow wiped the memory of her from his mind and barely remembers her. I am on the edge of a cliff with her Finn, one wrong move and I could lose my only chance at life love.'
'Harsh.'
'Yes harsh indeed. That is why I want to find out about him. He has broken through the bond that the girl and I share, a bond that should not allow her to even look to another man. Yet he managed to pass his phone number to her.'
'Just a question, have you two consummated this bond by any chance, you talk of a wiped memory and you barely remember her so I can safely assume that you two haven't?'
'No, when I gave her the necklace she was hours away from her eighteenth, I told her I would return to her the next night. However I did not realise that when I kissed the necklace on her chest, it wiped her and the night we spent together from my memory completely.'
'That is some serious magic going on there Phabe. My suggestion, get your freaky on with the girl. If I know anything of bonding stones, it's that once you two have done the deed, it's smooth sailing from then on.'
