Chapter 15
Olive opened the door and let Danika in, her guards waiting outside. She looked at Olive in her dressing gown and then to the half naked Phabel by the window who was putting on a cotton business shirt.
'Did I interrupt something?' she whispered.
Olive bit her lip unknowingly as her eyes looked over at Phabel and then back to Danika.
'Oh my god Olive, I'm so sorry, I'll go wait outside.'
'Don't be ridiculous.'
Danika wanted to quiz Olive about what she had interrupted, well at least the p-g version of the events. She did not want to hear about Phabel getting down and dirty with her. Sure he was good looking, holding much of the line that had passed through Lucian's father and his grandmother but that was where she wanted the comparisons to stop. She didn't want to think that Phabel was just as good looking as her husband, nor the fact that they looked quiet similar to each other. Danika wished there was a delete button in her mind, something that could discard disastrous thoughts like that, knowing that if Lucian were to take a trip through it, he might find them. That would be what any husband wants, she scoffed in her mind, to find that his wife thinks another man is just as good looking as he is, worse yet, a relative. She was just grateful that Phabel couldn't read minds and the guards were on the other side of the closed door.
Olive packed her belongings into the bags, her text books into the boxes that Danika had brought. Everything that she owned was in a few boxes and bags, Danika's guards took them to the car while she handed her keys back to the building manager. He had tried to grump at her about the lack of notice but Phabel shut him up with money. Olive wasn't impressed, she didn't want him tossing his money at her problems but she said nothing. She had said goodbye to her old drab apartment and walked out the door for the last time, hoping that she never had to look at the place again. They made a pit stop at the coffee shop, Olive said goodbye to Frannie pretending to be a little upset that she was leaving. The reality was that she was ecstatic, she was sick of making coffees for people who didn't appreciate it.
Danika looked upon the couple in front of her as they drove to Phabel's apartment. It was cheesy but it was perfect. Their fingers were laced together, holding hands and a permanent smile on both of their faces. She had been texting Lucian with little updates, telling him that they were in that sickening phase of longing looks and little giggles. He responded to her, stating that they were like that not so long ago, and much to his delight it had not worn off either.
As the driver slowed, Phabel sweetly kissed Olive and turned into a bug, flying out the window as Danika lowered it for him.
'That is so cool.' Olive grinned as the window went back up.
'I know.'
The driver pulled away, leaving Phabel to attend to his normal morning habits ensuring that if anyone were to look upon him, they would see the professor going about daily life and nothing more.
'So tell me what's happening and keep it clean.'
'Oh it's clean.' she said dryly.
'Sorry.' Danika grinned 'You should have put a sock on your door.'
The two women looked at each other and then burst out laughing.
'It's ok, he is still insisting that we wait a little longer. I was just being difficult. He had another vision, it was pretty brutal on him I think. It knocked him off the stool.'
'That's intense.'
Olive nodded.
'But the memory was a good one. He remembered the food we ate. I wanted him to have more memories. It kills me to think he is suffering without these memories, to know that I have them but he doesn't.'
'He will get there, don't rush the love because if you do, the passion may not be intense enough for the reversal to work.'
She nodded but inwardly sighed. Olive thought if anything there would be another chance tonight, they were both going to the castle, he would be there for the entire weekend.
'I have a surprise for you when you get to the castle.' Danika grinned madly.
'Oh?'
'I ain't telling, it's supposed to be a surprise.'
'That's just cruel.'
'But fun.'
Olive shook her head with a grin.
'But on a serious note, we need to discuss somethings about the castle.'
She could see the concern on her face.
'It's all ok, I promise. The staff are used to having humans around my family haven't turned as yet and visit frequently so there is no issue. Though I think that Phabel will want to take you to his world soon, so you should probably start preparing yourself for that.'
'I'm fine with it, I want to be with him and I can't wait to go to another world. The thought of it is so bizarre.'
'It is bizarre, trust me.' Danika scoffed. 'Ok, so down to the serious stuff. It's a little scary to think about it but I wanted to warn you first. The castle has ghosts, four to be precise.'
Olive stared at her with her jaw hung open a little. As she snapped back into the conversation she frowned.
'Are you serious?'
'Very much so. They are Lucian's grandparents and great grandparents. You needn't fear them, they are family and they will not harm you. But you will see them quite often as it is their home too. They mostly come out during the day, sometimes of a night time. It would respectful of you to curtsy them though they do not expect it of anyone. They are from his mother's line and therefore they are the former kings and queens of this world. Their departure from this world is not something that you will learn about in vamp history because they were murdered.'
'And they are still friendly?'
'Amazingly yes. Those that did the heinous deeds are dead and they want to leave the past where it should be. So what do you think about living with ghosts?'
'I don't know, I guess it's ok, I mean you look pretty sane.'
Danika laughed.
'You wait till you sit down to breakfast with them.'
'They eat?'
'No, they just waft over their chairs and talk about things, regaling us with their life, discussing politics. Sometimes it's hard to get a single word in.'
**************************
They had arrived at the castle, Danika introduced Olive to the staff and gave her the tour of the castle. Olive was very quiet as she followed Danika around.
'There is nowhere that you need fear to tread, this is your home for a year and we want you to feel comfortable here.'
Danika led her to the garden, following a stone chip path through to a gate.
'This was where Lucian and I were married. He and the gardener restored this garden and brought out the beauty of this land. Remember to curtsy and don't go screaming for the hills, ok?'
Olive nodded, suddenly feeling sick. She was about to meet four ghosts. Danika took her hand for reassurance, trying to alleviate her fears. Two figures wafted through the stone wall, a man and a woman. The man looked like Lucian, a haunting vision of Danika's love.
'Good afternoon Danika.'
'Good afternoon Lucian, Nicoleta, this is Olive Matheson. She and Phabel are uh, together.'
Olive stopped freaking out the second she realised that it wasn't as bad as she figured it to be. She curtsied as two more figures appeared through the wall.
'Lucian and Nicoleta are the grandparents and his great grandparents, the elder Lucian's parents, Grigore and Stefania.'
She curtsied again to the smiling ghosts, watching carefully as they drew closer.
'Olive is going to be living here until she completes the vamp history part of her course at the university. When she is done with that she and Phabe will... I don't know.' Danika turned 'Have you decided?'
'Not as yet.'
'If I know anything about Eris and Islana they will expect their son to marry before residing with you.' Grigore offered 'So it maybe that you are with us for longer than you expect my dear.'
'Of course.' she blushed.
'They will be joining us for dinner tonight and staying the weekend. Alina and Alex will be joining us for lunch tomorrow, we would like very much for you all to join us for each of the meals.'
'Thank you, your offer is most gracious.'
Danika nodded her head slowly with a grin.
'Dinner is at six, we will leave you to rest.'
She took Olive by the elbow and took her back down the path, Olive turned and watched as the ghosts faded into the air around them.
'His parents are staying?' she whispered 'What happened to a weekend alone?'
'Sorry, it was a late change of plans that I had no control over. They aren't ones for insisting that the two of you behave but for the weekend you might want to. Though it's going to be pretty obvious when you do, seeing as Phabe's memory will return.' she chuckled.
Danika looked at the disappointed look on her face.
'I wouldn't worry about it. I had the maids set up the guest accommodation for them far away from your room with Phabel right across the hall.'
'Last night I slept better than I ever had. I know I would miss him too much.'
'What are you going to do when he goes back to his apartment?'
'I don't know.'
************************
Olive couldn't help but grin at the mad smile on Danika as she held the door to what would be her room for the next year. It was on the first floor of the castle, down a short corridor that was straight off the stairs. The door itself was grand, a dark wood door with panel inserts and a brass handle.
'Are you ready?'
'Sure.'
Danika pushed open the door revealing the newly renovated room. It had been bare since the recent renovations that they had to do to maintain the dilapidated castle but with the newest arrival, Danika had returned the furniture to the room with a few additions. Olive stepped through the door to a room that was enormous, she couldn't grasp how one bedroom could be so large. All of the walls were the stone that the castle was built in, looking pristine and fresh. Her eyes darted everywhere around the room, trying to take in as much as she could. The ceilings were high, large beams stretched over the room. There was a fire place with a leather lounge nestled in front of it and at the back of the room was a work station. She was speechless as she crossed the wood floor, looking around. Danika took her hand with a look of pure excitement as she dragged her to the what would be her new life.
'For you.'
Olive looked at the large table that had several piles of different types of materials, she turned to the work station that had a draws and pretty boxes that were neatly stacked. A sewing machine and over-locker sat on the bench, looking very new. Olive could feel the emotions swell, tears welling in her eyes. There was even a sewing mannequin.
'I know it's not complete yet.' she sighed 'The builder is coming on Monday to build shelves over there so if there is any changes that you want to make, you should leave instructions for him.'
With tears in her eyes, she turned to Danika. She crumpled a smile and engulfed her in a hug, letting her sob the tears of happiness.
'Ok, enough of that, more to see.'
Danika took her hand and led her through the door to the bedroom. To the left of the door was the bathroom, a room that was as big as her old apartment. Olive stared at the fine fit out, the white was so shiny bright and new, she wondered if anyone had ever used it. Across from the bathroom was another room that was just as large, it's walls were lined with hanging spaces and draws.
'I don't have many clothes.' she said quietly.
'Well then you should make some and when you become a shifter we can go shopping in mid jump, my shout.'
'I can't take Lucian's money.'
'Who said it's Lucian's money?' she scoffed 'Before him I was pretty wealthy.'
'You were?'
'I was in a band, it's how we met.'
Danika linked her elbow into Olive's as she lovingly thought of the days not so long ago when she met Lucian.
'He had come to one of our concerts to keep his youngest sister company. We hadn't thought about vampires much until we met them backstage that night but after that, we did. There was a gap in our tour schedule and we came here to film a video clip that was for a song that my brother had written. He said it was like it had come out of nowhere, after meeting Lucian and Marinya he was inspired. So we got our favourite director onto it and he sourced this place, purely by coincidence.'
Danika led her to the main part of the bedroom, against the back wall was one large wood bed. It had posts that led to the wood canopy, surrounded by a dark green curtain.
'I believe that it was not coincidence, I believe that it was meant to be. Just like you and I were destined to become friends and in turn, you and Phabel becoming reunited. Don't you agree?'
'Absolutely.' she smiled 'Vampires freak me out but with you I persisted and did my damnedest to move beyond that fear and now I have a friend.'
'And your love back.'
Olive blushed as a figure appeared at the door near them, she turned with a smile. Phabel with an overnight bag in hand, she didn't think there was a better sight.
'Yeah.' she breathed with a grin.
'Ok, I'll leave you to explore your room, change it as you please. If you need anything I'll be in the study with Lucian.'
She stopped beside Phabel who hadn't once looked away from Olive.
'Your parents will be here at five thirty Phabe, whatever you are planning on doing, I would suggest you get it done before then.'
His head turned to her with curiosity.
'They are staying the weekend. Lucky you.'
Danika grinned as he winced, knowing what his parents were like. Not before marriage.
'Great.' he muttered.
'Catch ya later.' Danika chuckled.
