Christmas Eve
The lights were hung around the barn the group had even set up a Christmas tree in there for their own presents and Christmas eve celebration. They were wrapped around the camp fire sharing stories of their childhood.
"I lived mainly in Europe from when I was four till fourteen." Emily stated drinking her beer that Mark had snuck out to them. Because they were home everyone knew her and JJ's real age so fake ID's didn't work.
"Did you ever see Paris? That's my dream vacation." Sighed Penelope as she pulled Derek closer and she snuggled into his arm.
"Actually thats the only place I haven't been that I wanted to go to." Replied Emily.
"What about you man? Where are you from?" Derek asked Spencer.
"Las Vegas" Spencer replied.
Everyone instantly grew smiles when they thought about going up there.
"We should head up there for new years!" Exclaimed Emily.
"Well JJ's already been." Laughed Spencer, but he quickly stopped when JJ smacked his chest.
"Is that where you were for thanksgiving?" Elle questioned.
"Yeah we went to visit his mom." JJ squeeked.
Before Emily could get a word in the barn door was pushed open to reveal Mark and Lisa carrying a large box.
"Come on guys we have a tradition we want to share."
Everyone bundled up to face the cool weather outside the warm barn, it wasn't windy or snowy. Everyone walked over to where Sandy was smoothing a spot of snow in the middle of the field.
Mark placed the box on the ground and became to unpack it. It held multiple tea candles that he pushed into the ground.
"So every year on Christmas eve we join together outside." Lisa started
"And we lights candles to remember those who have gone on. Not just this year but every year and because you are joining us we ask you to participate." Sandy smiled at the group of children in front of her.
"I'll go first." Lisa stepped forward and lit two candles. "For my grandma and grandpa."
Next up was Sandy. "My late husband Peter."
Mark after. "Milo Anson my best friend... Died in battle six months ago."
Derek decided to go up with Penelope trailing behind him. "For my father."
"My parents." Penelope added.
"My father as well." Elle joined next.
JJ took Spencer's hand as they walked up to the circle. "Rosalind..." JJ sniffed trying to hold back tears.
Spencer placed a hand on the small of her back before he bent down to light his candle. "Riley Jenkins"
Emily and Aaron stood back watching their friends remember the dead. "My biggest fear about lighting these candles was that one day one of us would have to say JJ's name..." Emily whispered up to her boyfriend.
"What do you mean?" Aaron asked very concerned.
"She was sick for a while after her dad died. It wasn't just driving the truck into the lake. It was drowing in the bathtub or giving up on life. I never got her help because this family couldn't afford to loose anyone else so tried my hardest to take care of her..."
Aaron pulled her into an embrace and the two stood there for a few moments.
"Common Magenta it's your turn!" Mark called over.
"Keeps your pants on Rocky I'm heading over."
Emily lit her candle and remembered her great aunt. Everyone grabbed hands before saying a quick remembrance of their loved one's then headed back inside to get warm.
"We should read a story." Pen suggested
"What story baby girl?"
"A Christmas classic!" Penelope said as she took a book from her bag
Derek laughed as he took the book Penelope was handing to him.
"Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring not even a mouse."
