Realizing

Anakin jumped out of bed and headed towards Ahsoka's bedroom. A heartbreaking scream woke him up in the middle of the night and it wasn't Padmé's.
"Ahsoka, what's wrong?", he asked worried. Ahsoka needed a moment to realize Anakin was standing in the doorway. She was horrified and gasped for air. "J-Just a nightmare. Nothing to worry about, I guess.", she stammered. The young togrutan tried to calm herself - with little success. Anakin went over to her and sat down on the edge of the bed. He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Was it some kind of vision?" "No, I don't think so. I haven't had one since I left the order." It's been two month since Ahsoka left and asked Padmé if she could sleep some nights in her apartment until she'd figured out what she'd do next. So weeks later she was still living with Padmé and she hasen't figured out anything.
"Do you want to tell me about your dream, snips?" "No, don't worry. It was just a nightmare. I'm okay, really." Anakin wasn't so sure about that. He could feel that his former padawan was seriously troubled but he decided to let it go for now. "Okay, if you say so. See you tomorrow." "Goodnight."

In the following night Ahsoka had a similar nightmare but it was worse than the first one. And the night after she had one again. They got worse every night. She dreamed about the war, the orders she gave which cost so many lifes, the lifes of good soldiers, of dear friends. In the fourth night she relived the moment when she let Steela Gerrera drop to her death. Steela's dead eyes where starring emotionless up to the blue sky, Lux kneeling beside her while streams of tears ran down his cheeks. This night Ahsoka couldn't hold back the tears herself. She cried into Anakin's chest while he was hugging her tightly. He comforted her the best he could but there was nothing to say what would have made Ahsoka's grief go away. After years as a jedi he hasn't forgiven himself for a single mistake he made. So they just sat there night after night, Ahsoka crying and Anakin comforting her. The dreams were like a climax: Every time she relived a more horrifying moment of the war. Scenes were she led her men into hopeless battles, moments she made wrong decisions which cost the life of so many! In these nights she realized that she became a murderer, a killing machine of the "glorious" republic. She'd never even be able to forgive herself for the killing of all these seperatist generals. Of course they all committed crimes but taking their lifes...
The pain tore her apart with every soul she killed again in her dreams. It didn't matter if she killed them directly or indirectly. Murder was murder, you can't talk yourself out of it.

Anakin felt so helpless watching Ahsoka crying every night. He insisted that she'd tell him about every dream and honestly he understood her quite well. He wanted to end her pain so badly! After two weeks in which Ahsoka nor he slept more than two hours he decided to ask Obi-Wan for help.
"Master, I don't know what to do. She's losing herself. The memories are tormenting her."
"I see."
"Is there anything I can do?" Obi-Wan thoughtfully stroke his beard.
"I'll talk with Ahsoka. Maybe I can figure out how to help her."
"Thank you, Obi-Wan. I appreciate it."
"Don't thank me already. It's possibile that I can't help end her missery."
"Let's hope you can."

Ahsoka and Obi-Wan sat crosslegged in one of the meditation chambers in the jedi temple. It was hard but Anakin was finally able to convince her to come back for just the meditation session. Anakin felt that it was hard for his padawan meeting all her friends again in the hallways who were her family not so long ago. He could feel Ahsoka's mental wall weaken with everyone who was happy to see her again but Anakin knew she would never join the jedi again. Her decision was final.
The young jedi night waited outside the chamber for his former master and his former padawan to finish meditating.

After several hours the doors finally opend. Ahsoka was the first to leave the room. There was an obvious sadness in her eyes. "What's wrong? Didn't you make any progress?" "No, it's not that. Obi-Wan helped me a lot. Apparently the force wants me to deal with my past and the seeds of the dark side which were planted each time I took a life or was part of a persons death. So I must go through all these nightmares until the seeds are all torn out, in a metaphorical way of course." Obi-Wan stood beside the young togrutan and layed his arm around her. "I'm sorry for the bad news but I'm sure you can make it through all of this, Ahsoka." Anakin went over to his former padawan and hugged her. "I'll stay by your side. You don't have to go through it alone." Ahsoka hugged him back. "Thank you, Anakin. I really appreciate it."
