A New Day

The sky glowed a blazing red as fire rose from the depths of a burning crater. Smoke filled the air, making it nearly impossible to breath. The sounds of metal crashing and gears turning resonated throughout the area, piercing the ears of all that heard.

The Prism Guard had suffered a beating unlike any other. One of the members of the team groggily rose up from the ashes and removed her red helmet. Her brunette hair flowed down and reached her shoulders. Her crimson red armor and black spandex were covered in dirt and ashes, but had not been burned from the fire.

"Matt! Edge," she screamed, "Where are you?"

The girl ran through the flames before leaping into a ditch when bullets started flying at her from afar. She looked up from the ditch as a bullet skimmed across her shoulder.

"Ah, fuck!" She yelled.

"Claire! Yo, Claire!"

Claire turned around to see another Guardian running her way. His green armor was also covered in dirt, and the visor of his helmet had shattered on one side, revealing his brown eyes and peach-colored skin.

"Edge," yelled Claire, "God, am I glad to see you."

Edge took off his helmet and panted, "Same. I really don't know what the fuck's going on here," he said, glaring at the explosions going off and fire burning behind him, "But something's going on here."

"I can see that," said Claire aggressively, "Wait, where's Matt?"

Edge and Claire looked into the distance to see more explosions going off and a crowd of Droids circling around a burning ditch. The two ran over to the hole, and with the last of their strength, began fighting off the horde of Droids. Claire leaped upon one of the Droids and ripped off one of it's robotic arms, causing it to spin around mindlessly. Edge took a metallic dagger out of its holster on his belt and stabbed one of the foot soldiers in the chest and slowly slid his knife down the robot's body, causing electricity to flow out from it, and in turn, destroying it.

Suddenly, a geyser of water burst out from the crater, extinguishing the fire. Edge and Claire looked up in the air and squinted their eyes. Not from the bright light of the sun, but from the radiating blue aura glowing in the sky.

A boy in navy blue armor and black spandex descended from the sky like a shooting star. His helmet was completely intact, his armor, shining, and his spandex, unscathed. The boy removed his helmet as his feet touched the ground. Edge walked up to him and smiled, slapping a hand on his shoulder.

"Never a dull moment, right, Matt?"

Matt brushed off his greeting and took a seat on the ash-covered ground.

"I just watched five people get hurt," he said.

Claire and Edge looked at him, concern in their gaze.

"Little kids," he continued, "I tried to get them all to safety but--"

Matt slammed his fist down on the ground, tears forming in his eyes, "Fuck..."

Edge walked over to Matt and took a seat next to him, "It's okay, man. It's depressing, but we can't win 'em all," he said, "We knew that going in when we got these things."

Edge pulled out a golden device, styled after a modern day smartphone, that opened up, then resembling a classic-style flip phone, revealing a glowing green gemstone.

"I know."

Claire walked over soon after.

"All we can do is try our best to save whoever we can."

Matt nodded and stood up, dusting off his costume. A small smile now beginning to form on his face.

"Yeah," he said, "I guess you're right."

Edge and Claire stood beside Matt and smiled. They had been out all night fighting, and the sun was now just rising. The fire began to fade, and the smoke started to clear. Birds started chirping, and the sounds of the breeze filled the air. All the signs of a new day.

"Day saved?" Asked Edge, putting his hands behind his head.

"Day saved," said Matt reassuringly, "Droids, Dismantled..."
