Chapter Five
After lunch we had a free period, which most new students, like myself, spent exploring the campus, but I had other plans.
"Okay so, tell me what exactly are we doing at block C when we don't have to be here?"
Max groans, leaning against the smooth brick walls. I stand beside him, watching students make their way around the building.
"We're going to talk to Henry"
I tell him without making eye contact. I knew he wouldn't have followed me if I had told him the plan beforehand.
"We are?"
He says, raising his eyebrows at me in shock. I nod, tugging at his shirtsleeve desperately. He was my only friend, I couldn't lose him.
"Yes, you can be my wingman"
I smile, trying to make the plan sound more appealing to him.
"I've never been a wingman"
He admits in a sultry tone. Before I could reply, there he was, Henry, standing at the water fountain, looking like a prince.
"Well then, time for some work experience"
I say quickly, pulling Max towards the fountains.
"Hey Henr-"
"Henry! There you are!"
A tall, ginger girl with piercing green eyes shoves past us, latching onto Henry's arm like a lion on its prey. I have to do a double take because I can't believe what I was seeing. Max gently pulls me away, letting us observe the scene first hand.
"What are you doing today after school?"
She smiles, running her hand through his golden hair. I can't believe she even dared to touch his silky mane.
"I was going to play baseball with Julian and some other guys-"
She leans in closer, her finger brushing along his tensed jaw. I watch her intently, furrowing my eyebrows.
"But I can cancel for you"
He winks, making her bite her lip. I grunt in disgust, I had seen enough, too much in fact. I was done here.
"I'll see you at 5"
She struts away, her ginger locks bouncing on her pointed shoulders. Henry slyly watches her leave, smiling to himself.
I'm standing in awe, unable to speak, when Henry suddenly notices me.
"Oh hi, Elliot, right? Sorry do you want to use this?"
He moves it of the way of the water fountain, allowing me to use it.
"No, sorry, I wanted to talk to you about some performance stuff after school today, but I can see you're busy"
I turn around quickly, utterly embarrassed. I grab Max's arm tightly, pulling him away with me.
"Hey, hold on, I'm free tomorrow morning if you still want the help"
He offers kindly, rubbing the back of his neck. He looked nervous, but I couldn't figure out why.
"Uh, yeah, sure, that'd be great"
I stutter, releasing my grip on Max. He sighs gratefully, rubbing his sore arm.
"I'll see you then"
He smiles at us both once more before turning and walking away.
