Chapter 9
We ended up at this quaint but busy looking diner. I perused the menu and settled on a burger and fries. I had soda because no one here knew how to make sweet tea. But I'd add that to the list of things to teach the chef how to make.
On the menu he had something with a cheese sauce. "Can you add the cheese sauce to the top of the fries?" I asked. He gave me a funny look. "I guess. You will love the cheese sauce they added tiny bits of bacon in there. I mean tiny!" He scurried off. "Is that a thing back where you live?" He asked. "Yep and sweet tea but you guys haven't figured that one out yet." I said. He chuckled. "Oh shame on us, you'll have to teach us your ways." He said.
The waiter brought out our food. He waited for me to try one of the fries. "Oh that is good cheese sauce. Here you gotta try this." I said holding a fry out to Andy. He took a bite. "Hey that is really good." He said. The waiter looked skeptical. So I handed him a fry. He took a bite. "Hey this is good, Joe hey Joe!! You gotta try putting some cheese sauce on the fries. It's amazing!" He said running off towards the kitchen with his arms in the air.
I chuckled. "Maybe they'll name it after me." I said. "Yes the Mac Attack!" He said enthused taking a big bite of his burger. Everything was delicious. I wiped my mouth. "Thanks for this, real food." I said. He chuckled. "You don't get real food where you're staying?" "Well it's real food just real weird. It's a cultural thing. It is. It's just...different than what I'm used to." I shrugged. "But was any of it good?" He asked. "Oh don't get me wrong I've tried some new things that were delicious! I think I'm just used to food back home." I popped the last few fries into my mouth. "Boy I'm stuffed." But I knew I'd most likely be back.
"Great, okay now we take a tour of the town. Eh what do you say?" He asked. "Okay, yea sure. I've been out...you know with the family but I'd love to see your take on it." I said. Lie, huge lie. I hadn't been out. I spent most of my time at the palace learning the ways of a royal and what little time out I had I always ended up at the skate park. He slipped some money onto the table. I tried to pull some money out of my pocket as well. "Nah, I got it. Let's go." He nodded his head towards the door. "Well thank you. I appreciate it.
"No problem, okay so the first thing I'm going to show is kind of a shame. There used to be this really cool aquarium here. Now the tanks are all empty. Things have been thrown inside the glass broken and people used spray paint on everything. I mean it's a shame." He took a right turn and I saw a huge bronze gate battered and beaten in. We slipped right through. I saw exactly what he was talking about.
The aquarium as it once was looked like a ghost town of sorts. It was all grey's in various colors. The only color was the splashes of spray paint here and there. "Is there a need for this to be open? Is it just taking up space? Should it be torn down and turned into something else." I didn't realize how much I valued Andy's opinion. Our conversations have been amazing and he knows so much, he knows so much about all the surrounding towns close to where he lives. "You know it was quite the site back in it's hey day. The only reason it closed down was because the couple that was running it got to old to do it and when they passed away their kids fought over what to do with it. They could never agree so it just sits here to this day. But to answer your question, yea I think it would be nice to have it restored to it's formal glory." He said.
I'd take that into consideration. I mean surely being queen meant I had some pull here. I could convince the family to sell that it's what's best for there country. Yes I'll do it. We walked around looking at the massive displays. "I bet this truly was beautiful back then." I said. "Oh it was they even did a fish parade. It kind of looked like the Chinese dragon parades. They could update it, use black lights it would be something to see." He grinned. You'd make a really good king. I clapped my hand over my mouth. "Are you okay?" He asked. "Absolutely." "Okay, ready to head out?" He asked. "Yea, let's go." We turned around and left the sad aquarium.
"What happened to all the trees and stuff by the water?" I asked. "A pretty big storm came through here last year and nobody thought they should fix it. One of the things I loved most about Levoux is they took pride in their landscape." Yep fixing that too. I'm going to take the gardener and his son and pay them extra, over time whatever and have them fix this.
As we walked up and down the streets I saw lot's of businesses with dilapidated fronts. The paint was chipping and they needed new windows on some. I frowned. "What's wrong?" He asked concerned putting a hand on my arm. "Everything looks different than I imagined." I said. "You know why? Don't tell anybody this." He lowered his voice to a whisper. "The King and Queen haven't been able to take care of everything like they used to. They are really old. I hear they are retiring soon." He said. "Oh, that's probably a good thing, you know get some fresh blood in there." I nodded. "I agree. And hey don't be sad, you'll go home at the end of summer and go to college and it'll be fine." That is what I told him isn't it? It's just as well this way it doesn't raise suspicion.
"I'm gonna miss you though, you think you'll come back?" He asked. "Yea a piece of this place has my heart now." I said. "Good." He frowned. "You okay?" It was my turn to ask him. "Yea, I just don't wanna think about it. It makes me sad." He turned to me and gave me a look. "You know, I haven't told you this yet. But I feel like it's a crime that I don't tell you. You're beautiful." "That was a little cheesy. But thank you." He groaned. "I know it was, it so was but in my head it sounded so much better." He laughed sheepishly. "I think it's cute." "Me or my cheese?" He asked. "Both." I clamped my hand over my mouth again. "Look, I have to go. I'm really sorry to cut this short but uh my parents are gonna yell at me if I'm late for dinner." I said.
"Oh, uh okay...you'll be at the skate park tomorrow?" He asked. "I don't know. Maybe." "Did I do something? I'm sorry if I did." He said taking a step towards me and then stopping. "No, not at all. It's me, things are just complicated." I said. "Right, because you're leaving at the end of summer. I totally got it. Okay, you go and I will see you when I see you." He said.
I walked like I was going home. When I saw that Andy was gone I called the girls. I knew I was risking waking them up but I needed help. "Hello?" Asked Cam groggily. "It's me, I know I woke you guys and I'm sorry but this is an emergency." I said. "Oh no, this sounds serious." Said Sadie. "It is, I think I like Andy." "Ha called it, you owe me twenty bucks." Said Cam. "How rude! This is serious." I said.
"I got you, but to be fair, I saw it coming. It's fine though." "It's not, I've gone to these stupid balls for weeks now and none of those guys are right he's right. I mean he has so many good ideas." "And he's cute don't forget cute." Said Sadie. "Yea, oh man is he ever. There was a moment today, I think he wanted to kiss me. I wanted to kiss his too. But I just couldn't...unless...WAIT THAT'S IT!!" "Still waking up, take it down a notch." Said Cam.
"Sorry, I got excited. I'm gonna petition the Royal court's." "The what?" Asked Sadie. "So the Queen is in charge. They kind of like work for her? She tells them what to do. So in meeting's things she want's done get done. But to keep things fair, if there is something that needs deciding she will let them give input. She has final say of course but it's good for her to hear other people's opinions." I said.
"Oh that sounds promising." Said Cam. "Right? But what if they agree. How do I tell him that I'm a queen, and that if he still wants to be with me it comes with major strings. You gotta help me run a whole country. I mean, he seems to like it here so he might be okay with it? But this was even a big pill to swallow for me! What if he freaks out?" I asked. "One step at a time, talk to the Royal Court, they may say no. And if they do, then you'll just marry one of those royals. Anybody look promising?" Asked Sadie.
"Daniel, he's nice and sweet and the most chill out of everybody. He's even kind of cute. I just feel so bad. He's going to marry me. I'm taking away his chance for true love. He's going to settle for me. And the crazy part is, a lot of those guys would be okay with that. They want the power or whatever. I take it he genuinely doesn't care." I sighed. "He sounds nice." Said Cam. "Yea, I mean he is. It's just, I'm going to always be comparing him to Andy, even in ten years. Because at that point it won't be him. It'll be a guy I really really love, and who knows...maybe in ten years I'll have grown to love Daniel." I said thinking about every possibility.
"So did you just agree on Daniel, like if the courts say no?" Asked Sadie. "Hey, I think I did. They'll still do weekly balls until I get ready to announce my engagement though." I thought. But this was good, this was progress. "So Sadie how's your lifeguard?" I asked. "Oooh I've been dying to know!" Said Cam. There was a long pause. "So he might've kissed me. And then we agreed we'd give it a shot. I mean it's local camp. He lives like thirty minutes from me." She said. "Ooh, are you thinking about inviting him to come to Levoux at the end of the summer?" I asked. "I don't know, I have to see how things go. Maybe, I really like him." Said Sadie.
"Yay I'm happy for you, no rich doctor has cornered me in the supply closet. But there's a creepy old janitor who only has eyes for me. No thanks." She said. "Nice!!" I laughed. "No it's not nice. It's creepy I'm still holding out on you introducing me to a cute Count, Lord or Duke." Said Cam. "So can do." I said. I asked about their summer and let them talk then they had to go get ready for the day and I had to get back for dinner. I texted the driver and he was there shortly.
