Chapter 1

Enjoy :)

It was a beautiful day. Warm weather, clear skies. There was a cool breeze that was feather light, just enough to balance out the sun.

The view was just as amazing. Overlooking the the hills of green grass and littered with colorful flowers. The scattered groups of cattle and livestock could be seen grazing about. In the distance, the thriving, ever-expanding village, definitely wide awake and busy.

Korra sighed, the feeling of pride swelling inside of her. It never got old, no matter how long she stared. This was her life. Even after all this time, it still felt surreal. A dream she was destined to wake up from, but hadn't.

The past few months were no doubt the best months of Korra's life. After her uncle was defeated, Korra was Queen and married. She had her family back, who were unwilling to let her go ever again.

She was surprised that her father, King Tonraq, allowed her to leave the castle alone so soon. Her mom was more reluctant, but after a little more time, even she gave Korra no problem with being alone outside the castle. Their relationship as a family was unbreakable. Although they'd spent a life time apart, it was like Korra had always been around. There were, of course, moments where her parents would find her in a mental state that they wouldn't be able to understand, because of her upbringing in servitude. It was a process, but they had been willing to support her in any way possible.

When she wasn't feeling her best, they'd step in and help out.

Asami was also a big part of Korra's support system. Korra was forever grateful to the other monarch. Asami had been an absolute perfect wife. Korra wasn't sure how she was real. Not only was she caring and strong-willed, but patient. She clearly loved Korra, and she wasn't afraid to tell anyone that they were married.

At least, that was what Asami told her.

A lifetime of being forced into servitude made being in a position of such power wasn't an easy transition. Other members of the high class circle were very put off by Korra joining their ranks. Being closed off by nature didn't help the situation. It usually took a bit of coaxing for her to get involved in conversation with strangers.

She was grateful when her friends were around to talk to during these social situations. Mako and Bolin were great companions, always ready to jump to her defense or to just hang out and goof off. They were the siblings Korra never had.

Things, all together, were more than what Korra had thought her life would be like. Going from a princess in hiding and servant to a Queen in a matter of months.

She was living in a storybook fairytale. Couldn't get better than this.

The soft sound of footsteps coming from behind her grabbed her attention. Korra recognized the footsteps, not needing to even turn around, though the habit to do so was strong. Arms wrapped around her waist, a warm body pressing against her back.

"Hey, darling."

That sweet voice. It never failed to fill Korra's stomach with butterflies every time she heard it. Korra smiled brightly, goosebumps rising when lips pressed against her exposed neck.

"Hi, Sami." Korra replied.

These moments made everything better. There was no better place, in Korra's totally biased opinion, than in Asami's arms. Asami was her safe space.

Asami rested her chin on Korra's bare shoulder, swaying them side to side. They stood there for a few silent moments in silence.

Korra finally broke the silence.

"Did you need something?" She asked, glancing up at Asami curiously.

Asami hummed in the affirmative.

"Yeah. We have that meeting with the monarchs from Arlandia and Xena. Thought I'd come and get you."

Korra felt her stomach and smile drop. Meetings with other royals were always anxiety-inducing for Korra. She'd never been taken very seriously as a ruler by other monarchs. These meetings always ended in Korra doing something wrong or just plain weird and the others would be giving her a look that made Korra want to hide for all eternity.

Of course, she couldn't tell anyone. Not even her parents. Korra was a ruler now and a grown adult. She couldn't afford to burden others with her incompetence as a ruler.

Running a kingdom was hard work and she knew she wasn't going to be perfect, but come on. How did Asami make it look so easy. It seemed like her wife always knew what to do or say in any given situation.

It wasn't fair. Meeting with other royals seemed like a walk in the park for Asami.

Korra did her best to look at least not totally upset.

"Right." She said, forcing a smile. "I'd forgotten about that."

Korra made no move to do anything. She was hesitant to go to this meeting. It was important, and necessary for alliance and such. Asami and their parents had told them of how much was riding on this alliance being made. It just made Korra's anxiety worse.

"It'll be fine." Asami tried to soothe her worries.

It did little to help, but Korra appreciated the effort. Korra nodded, knowing that she couldn't waste any more time. She squared her shoulders and turned around in Asami's arms, looking up at the taller of the two.

"I'm ready. When do they get here?"

Asami pressed a gentle kiss to Korra's forehead. She smiled warmly, making Korra temporarily forget about her anxiety.

"They're actually already here."

Korra's eyes widened.

"Already? Why didn't you say something? C'mon."

Korra pulled Asami by her hand back into the room and towards the door. As they walked through the castle halls, passing by staff and others that worked in the palace, Korra had Asami go over the overall points of the meeting. She did her best to stomp her nerves down, but the fluttering in her stomach wouldn't stop. It made her feel nearly sick.

To distract herself, Korra found herself looking around as they walked.

Even after all this time living in the palace, it still took her breath away at moments. The shined floors, the intricate details off the paintings that adorned the walls. The flowers that gave the palace vibrate color. It was all a dream home. The staff bows as the queens passed. Korra loved all the staff members.

When she'd first became Queen, they all treated her with such respect and kindness. Having the background that she did, it made her more sympathetic to their struggles and so she did her best to be as friendly and understanding towards them. Just because she was Queen now didn't mean she would forget what she'd been through.

They arrived at the meeting room, the guards bowing to them while opening the doors for them. Korra took a deep breath and tried to look as confident and in control as Asami did.
The raven-haired woman was the picture of grace and power.

Korra took comfort in knowing that if anything were to go wrong, Asami would be there. She could do this. She had to do this.

"Ready?" Asami whispered, as they walked into the room to join their visitors.

Korra glanced at her wife. She tried not to fidget with her hands. She gave the slightest nod of her head when they met eyes.

"Ready as I'll ever be." She lied.

Stars above, have mercy.

So yeah :) Hope this first chapter wasn't too awful. I'm definitely setting too high standards for myself with this story. I just hope it turns out as good as you all hope it'll be :) let me know what y'all think!
