Fleeing

Royce and I planned our escape. We were going to steal palace horses and ride them to the wall, use my new power to get passed the wall, and then we will make the journey to a close-by village to get our royal emblems off our persons.

It sounded easier said than done.

Royce and I snuck out of the window and booked it for the stables. The groomers were to show up in a few minutes, so we quickly made preparations.

Once everything was situated, a small boy, around the age of seven, showed up with a slight smirk on his face.

"Now, what would the guards think if their soon to be married rulers were found trying to sneak away?"

"As your Queen, I command you to stay silent."

"I must not lie under oath, m'lady."

He was correct under this circumstance, but I had to do something.

"I hereby grant you access to my bedroom while I am gone. Sneak in through the window. Tell Caitlyn I have done this to keep you quiet. You may sell anything you can carry."

"Thanks, m'lady. Your secret is safe with me."

"Thank you. Have a good night."

And we rode off towards the palace walls. The guards who walked the perimeter see people come and go all the time, so it wasn't unusual to see people riding around late at night - one of the perks of having a knight in your presence growing up. You get to know all the secrets guards have in their routines.

We rode up to the gate, the guard telling us to halt.

"Who wishes to leave Lyandrio?"

"Your Queen."

"We cannot allow that, your majesty."

"Excuse me? I command you to let us pass!"

"Your father gave us orders, your majesty."

"My father is letting me and Royce enjoy our last taste of freedom before our marriage. Let us through."

"We can not allow that without your father present, m'lady."

"Fine then. I shall go fetch him myself."

And Royce and I headed far enough away to where they wouldn't notice us.

"This is harder than I thought it was going to be. Father made sure I wasn't going to escape this."

"Can you climb?"

"Can I climb? Are you mad? You taught me. You should know if I can climb or not!"

"Just making sure. You're going to have to ditch the dress, though. It isn't made for climbing."

"Or for anything for that matter. Turn around."

"Why?"

"I don't feel comfortable getting out of this in front of you. Please turn around."

"Ok ok. I'll turn around."

He did as asked, and I quickly got out of the dress. I just wanted to make sure there would be no spillage in front of him. Luckily, I didn't spill over the corset during the process.

"Ok, let's get over this hunk of junk."

"Right behind you, m'lady."

"Don't start that now. You've never done so before, and I don't want you to."

"Whatever you say, m'lady."

I let out an annoyed grunt and started to climb the bricks. Some were inset, some were poking out, it was pretty easy to climb for something impenetrable.

But once we got to the top, things went downhill. A guard was waiting for us. We were held at bow point. Crossbow point, to be exact.

"I am hereby, arresting you for not obeying-"

And I kicked him over the wall. He was completely fine, but we were able to get over the wall. With this newfound freedom, we sprinted towards the forest. It would be hard to find us. We both promised to meet back up in the motel we planned to stay at. Wearing civilian clothes, of course.

We took two days to meet back up. I had to get some lady to give me her clothes, and she happily obliged, for I am a queen, but Royce had a problem or two.

"Royce! Why is your face all bruised up?"

"I got into a fight with a man. It's no big deal."

"But it is! You could have gotten seriously injured. Do you have your sword, or did you ditch it?"

"Ditched it. It is fairly easy to track."

"Good point. I should probably ditch the name and the hair."

"But it looks so good on you!"

"Yeah, but does it scream 'lesbian and single?'"

"Not really..."

"Then it needs to go! Come on, Royce! I'm just going to call you Ro from now on. It is recognizable to those who know, but no one else."

"I'll call you Daph. Same reasons."

"Ok, then! Off to the parlor!"

We made it to the nearest parlor, and I asked for a shoulder-length bob. Something to tell girls I'm single and ready to mingle. The barber gave me precisely what I had planned, and I paid him three times the price.

"Let's go find some suitors!"

"If you don't want to get caught, don't call them that..."

"...Let's go find some dates!"

"That's better!"
