Chapter Nine
POV: America
As thousands of people scream for my death, I feel surprisingly calm. I take comfort in the fact that at least a few, a small number, of people are watching with anxious eyes. My family won't want my death. At least I hope so.... I take another deep breath. The best I can do is go out with dignity and keep my head high. I just hope that whatever they have scheduled for me won't be too painful. I shiver at the thought. I hope Aspen isn't watching.
"Welcome, welcome." Gavril says in a game show voice. His tone irritates me. This is just a game to him. And to everyone else but me. Well maybe except for Maxon. No, for him this was just revenge.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here today to witness the execution of this rebel."
He pauses as I guess he indicated toward me. "Who has admitted her guilt to the murder of Lady America."
What? I may know I'm guilty, but I never said it aloud. Right? For some reason I can't remember anything past killing her. And even that is hazy. I don't know why, but I also don't remember much about the last year or so. The more I try to remember, the more I can't. It's like trying to blow out a fire. The more you blow, the more the flames engulf.
"Will you read the official charges King Clarkson?"
Galvin asks in that ever despised voice.
"Sure." Responds Clarkson just as cheery. Man, does everyone hate me? In the background, I hear the rush of people's cries, screaming, chanting even, for my death. Was I really that awful? Or did they just want gore?
"This girl, Hannah Jefferson, is a confirmed southern rebel. Not only has she plagued us for years, along with the rest of her rebel scum, but she is also guilty of murdering Lady America, soon to be bride of Prince Maxon. Now I ask you, does she deserve death?"
A resounding cheer struck through the stage, shaking me to my very bones. This was it. They all wanted me dead.
"And so it is said." Says Clarkson in an almost cheery voice. Well of course he's cheery! He's the king. He gets to watch my death, set an example for all of Illea, and justify a murder all in one day, without even lifting a finger. I'd be happy too.
"I now ask Aspen Ledger to come forward, to share some memories of America on this most gracious day."
This is Gaviln's voice. The next voice that spoke out next was one so familiar, so normal, so ordinary that my heart almost skipped a beat.
"Lady America and I knew each other a long way back, before she was chosen and I drafted."
Chosen and drafted? When did that happen? I don't remember being-her being- chosen. This so confuses me that in my thinking, I miss most of what he says. It must have been pretty short, however. I could hear the emotion, almost like he was crying, in his voice. But I come to just in time to hear his last words.
"And she loved me."
There are a few seconds silence, then the crowd roars once again in a mixture of love struck sighs, and more cries for my death. But none of that matters to me. The only thing that truly matters is the voice that just stopped talking.
"Aspen."
I whisper, testing out the words on my tongue. Then, slightly louder, I say it again.
"Aspen."
Almost as if saying it twice confirmed the rush I felt saying his name, I scream gleefully.
"Asp-"
My happy exclamation ends in a gasp a one the the guards knees me in the stomach. Pain engulfs my body, leaving me winded and gasping for breath. Bending over, I would have collapsed to the ground had the guards not held me up.
"Do that again, and I'll make it twice as painful."
I'm not too sure if by that he means my death or another knee to the stomach, but what have I got to lose? I try again, as loud as my tattered body can yell.
"....Aspen." I meant it as a scream, but it comes out more of a forced gasp. "Aspen."
" ....May the prisoner be brought forward?" An unfamiliar voice asks. This must be the voice of my killer. I feel a rush of adrenaline. This is my last chance. Arching my tied arms, I hit the guard on my left as I kick at the other. They let go, clearly surprised. Spinning, I run only to be taken down two feet later by another guard. This time all three of them drag me there. I'm firmly tied down with more ropes to a wooden structure. My arms where tied above me, and my legs underneath me, one to the left and one to the right, creating an O shape. I was suspended by my arms completely, and they where already beginning to ache.I was tied so tightly that I couldn't feel my hands or feet. I hear the click of a bullet locking in place in front of me. So this is how I'm going to go: a bullet to the head. At least it'll be painless. However, I didn't want to die. Shaking, I struggle to keep my head high. I was really going to die. This was it: no way out.
"One" someone calls out. My heart races. I do the one thing that always helped me to calm down as a child. I sing.
" A gypsy rover came over the hill.
Down through the valley so shady.
He whistled and sang till the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.
"Two"
"She left her father's castle gate.
She left her own fine lover.
She left her servants and her state.
To follow her gypsy-"
"Three"
I close my eyes, besides the blackness of the blindfold already engulfing me, bracing myself for the jolt of pain I was to experience any second now. But then, out the nowhere I hear someone yell in a panicked shout
"Wait!"
It didn't matter though. It was too late. The bullet rips deeply through me. I bleed out. And the world fades away.
