48 - The Press Conference

We all stared at the tv screen.

    'Fuck' I let out

'Jungkook' my mother gasped, probably because she wasn't used to such words coming out of my mouth.

'We need to do something!' I exclaimed. Both my parents looked at me doubtful and I knew they were thinking about the letter.

'I have been thinking about the letter. I am sure Hana doesn't know and maybe 'we can ask her to find it, I am sure she will help us?'

'Although that is not a bad idea, Mrs Yoon indicated that she made multiple copies. She knows I could have asked someone from y/n's organisation as well..' Father replied.

That did make a lot of sense yet I was so hopeful for this plan I didn't even consider that.

Throughout the whole day the media was extremely horrible against y/n. They saw this running away as proof that she worked for her father to sabotage the family. She was fleeing because everyone had discovered the "truth". I truly hoped y/n wasn't watching. It worried me greatly, because seeing this while she was by herself might be too much.

The following day the stories continued and they became more and more. My phone rang and it was a private number. I immediately picked up hoping that it was y/n

'Have you seen the news?' it wasn't a female voice on the other end. It was the deep voice I could only assume it was Taehyung

     'yes' I answered

'Can't you do anything?' Taehyung said anxiously.

'I don't know.. it's a complicated situation. I can't tell you exactly but I am trying to find a way.'

It was a super vague answer I gave Taehyung but I couldn't tell him about the letter. He sighed

'okay. I hope she isn't watching this.'

'Me neither.'  I replied as I shared the same worry. We said our goodbyes and I ended the call. Not long after there was a knock on the door and soon after Father stepped inside my room.

'Hey' I said, it was an awkward situation. I was still angry about the fact he chased y/n but in the meantime a lot more drama unfolded and staying angry about that seemed stupid right now.

'Son, I will hold a press conference in about an hour.' he announced.

       'About what?'

       'y/n'

       'oh, what will you say?'

'I don't know yet it depends on the question but I would like you to be there. I like the whole family to be there.'

      'uhm okay'

There was something in his face and doing that worried me a little bit, as if he was nervous.

The hour passed so fast and here I was standing in front of a room full of reporters. I was in between mother and Yeonjun. Father stood in front of us and at the place of the microphone. The spokesperson of the royal house asked everyone to sit down and explained that reporters were appointed to ask questions.

The first reporter stood up.

Okay here we go.

'Thank you for allowing me to ask the first question.' The reporter politely said. The king gave a nod. 'Aren't you outraged about the fact that the girl that seduced your son, the prince, is the daughter of a key figure in the very movement that wants to bring you down?'

I stared at father, I felt bad for the fact they were bombing these kinds of questions on him like this. But the fact was that he wasn't necessarily the victim here, it was y/n. I waited for his answer in anticipation.

Father shook his head 'Y/n has not spoken to her father in years, the fact you have made allegations that she in a way would conspire together with him only makes this situation way more painful for her.'

My mouth fell open, he was publicly defending her. Even when he knew that could mean that Mrs Yoon would make the letters public.

Another reporter was appointed and got up to ask her question

'How can you be so sure y/n wasn't there to conspire against you? Aren't you being naïve because the prince is so taken with her? Because the coincidence is too big isn't it? She started the same class as your son and she became close to the prince when her father was your opponent. It's not plausible to assume she followed his orders?'

The way that she summarized it was pretty logical I had to admit. But the reason why y/n was there was because she was my bodyguard, and the fact her father was this politician was something she didn't know either. The only way to convince people of the truth was to tell that truth but that would mean making everything public.

My father shook his head again, 'it is a big coincidence indeed, but I know she wasn't there because she followed her fathers orders..'

There was a pause

      'because she was following mine'

Now the entire room gasped loudly, including myself. All the reporters jumped up by this big revelation, shouting question after question. but I just gazed at my father.

He was going to take the fall.

We locked eyes for a short moment and he nodded, like this reassuring "it's okay" nod.

'If you all calm down I will answer your questions.. but only if we get some order here' he indicated in a firm voice, this surely put all the reporters back in place. They all sat down. Soon after one reporter was pointed out who was allowed to ask his question.

'Sir, could you explain what you meant exactly?'

'yes I can, when my son went to university I felt the need to protect him because he is a prince and there can be danger anywhere. Jungkook however wasn't too keen on this idea. He really wanted to have a "university" experience, I respect him for that, but I was too worried. So I came up with a plan to protect him anyways without him knowing. I hired a female bodyguard from his own age, to join classes and keep an eye on him as a neighbor. ' he chuckled 'I had not given it a single thought that perhaps they would fall in love, but they did. and to be honest I haven't seen my son this happy and certain as he is today.'

My heart beat rapidly against my chest.

Another reporter was chosen to ask a question. He looked very suspicious, as if he didn't believe a word my dad just said.

'isn't it a bit much to hire a bodyguard like this? Is he in that much danger? Plus why this girl?'

'He is. She actually saved him from an ambush. and her because we asked for the best.'

'Why are you telling us all of this now?'

Father looked down and there was this small smile, as if he completely accepted the situation.

'My son's happiness is very important to me and he has repeatedly told me y/n is vital for that. She didn't run away because of the reasons you think, she ran away because she felt it would damage Jungkook's reputation if she stayed... because I told her so.'

Another reporter slowly got up

'I am sorry to say this but why would you tell her that if Jungkook's happiness is what matters?'

He looked at me

'it was because someone has been blackmailing me, threatening to release information to the press about my late wife.'

Again a lot of noise came from the crowd

     'What kind of blackmail?'

Father took a deep breath 'I think it is time to finally tell the truth.....the former queen didn't die of a heart attack but of suicide. There are many possible reasons why she has done it, but none of us will ever know for sure because there was nobody there at the time. I didn't want people to speculate about my late wife right after her death, for a public figure like her many stories will be produced. I didn't want that to happen, especially not for my son. But now it is different. I will not be threatened, I told my family the truth earlier this week and now you know as well.'

Father cleared his throat

'That will be all, I will answer no more questions for today.'

I stood frozen as I saw my father leave the press microphone. Mother reached out her hand and took his,

'I am so proud of you' she said in a low voice. I, myself, tried to hold back any form of emotion. This would surely have some disastrous effects on my fathers image.

After the press conference we stayed inside the palace. We all tried to watch the news as little as possible. The hate that was focused on y/n shifted to my father. The lying king, the two faced king, and even the cheater king were nicknames he got. Because as he had predicted people came up with stories including one in which he cheated. People boycotted the palace and the anti monarchy movement seemed to get more followers by the hour.

I was exhausted, 2 days passed and still no word from y/n. I was so worried, what if the criticism became too much again, even when they were nice to her now? Maybe she didn't even watch tv anymore so she wouldn't even know the public opinion was more in favor of her. What if she disappears forever? she can't, can she?

After dinner I returned to my chambers. As soon as I stepped in I noticed that there was something different, a change in the air or something.

I turned around and although it was dark I saw a figure sitting on the side of my bed. I immediately was alerted, doubting between throwing something at him, switching the lights on or opening the door and getting the hell out of here.

'kook'

my heart skipped a beat at hearing her voice, it was almost a whisper.

I quickly turned on the switch of the lights and there she was.
