Chapter Three: Family Time - Mother and Son
As Kazuto walked to the principal's office, he could hear his classmates whispering to each other.
"Is he getting expelled?" he heard one ask.
"What about the PDA between him and Yuuki," a girl remarked.
"Most likely." another agreed.
He rolled his eyes and he arrived at the principal's office a few minutes later.
"Ah Kazuto," the Principal began. "Detective Kikuoka and Ms. Koujiro asked to meet with you."
"May we speak with him alone?" Kikuoka asked the Principal. "This is a private matter."
"Of course," the Principal replied. "Would you like an empty classroom to speak in?"
Kikuoka nodded and the Principal walked them to an empty classroom. When they entered, the Principal stated, "I will be waiting in my office if you need anything else." before she left the room, leaving the three alone.
Rinko took a shaky breath and asked, "A-Are you ready, Kazuto?"
Kazuto nodded, "Yeah."
Kikuoka handed Kazuto an envelope and explained, "Here are the results of the DNA test. We have not seen the results, as Rinko wanted to see them with you."
Kazuto nodded and opened up the envelope and looked at Rinko with wide eyes. He dropped the paper and Rinko picked it up before she smiled and her eyes began to tear up.
Kikuoka smiled at the two of them and said, "I'll give you two some time to yourselves."
"Kazuto, What do you think?" Rinko asked.
"I'm speechless," Kazuto began, "I never thought that I would actually be able to find out that you're my mother."
Rinko opened her arms and wrapped her around her son. She was so happy that she finally got confirmation that Kazuto is her own son.
Rinko thought, 'I will never let you out of my sight ever again.'
"Um, Rinko?" Kazuto asked shyly, "You can let go now, you're squeezing me."
"Right, sorry." Rinko apologized.
Rinko let go and Kazuto let out a breath of air.
Kazuto replied, "It's fine, but it's nice to know that you're my Mom."
"I love you so much, Kazuto!" Rinko cried.
"Um," Kazuto muttered, "Love you too."
Tears fell down from Rinko's face, she was overwhelmed that her own son said that she loved her.
"It's ok," Kazuto comforted, "I just said that I love you."
"This means so much to me that you'd say it!" Rinko exclaimed.
Kazuto nodded and wrapped his arms around Rinko in an attempt to make her feel better.
'What an emotional woman,' Kirito thought, 'Yet somehow I'm related to her.'
Rinko softly cried into his chest and it was like that for a few minutes until her tears stopped.
"It's ok now," Kazuto began, "but I have to go back to class."
"Right," Rinko agreed, "I'll see you after school!"
Kazuto waved and left the empty classroom. He went down the hall and up the stairs to the left. He was at his next class, he opened the door.
"Hey! So did they find out that you did PDA with Asuna?" A student shouted.
Another student yelled, "You're in trouble for parking your motorcycle in the teacher's parking lot!"
"Huh, what?" Kazuto asked, confused.
"I apologize," the teacher started, "they've been spreading rumors about you ever since you went to the principal's office."
Kazuto nodded.
"I've been trying to shut them up ever since class started," the teacher laughed.
Kazuto remarked, "I guess that didn't work."
The teacher shrugged and Kazuto went to take his seat.
"Psst," a student whispered, "Don't listen to the other students."
"I know, this is just a typical high school experience," Kazuto commented.
The other student nodded and turned his head back towards the front of the classroom.
'I guess I never get a break, huh?' Kazuto pondered.
When school finished for the day, Kazuto walked to his motorcycle where Asuna was waiting for him.
"Did you have a good day, Kirito-kun?" Asuna asked him with a smile.
Kazuto gave a small smile and replied, "Yeah. I also found out something that I need to share with my Au... with Midori and Sugu."
Asuna looked at Kazuto in confusion and worry.
"Kirito-kun?" Asuna asked, "Is... Is something wrong?"
Kazuto sighed. "It's just a family issue, Asuna, but I'll tell you when we get to my home."
Asuna nodded, but still looked worried.
Later, at the Kirigaya Household
Kazuto and Asuna arrived at the door of the Kirigaya Household. Asuna held Kazuto's hand while he used his other hand to knock on the door.
"Onii-chan!!" Suguha shouted.
Kazuto sighed, "You don't have to call me that."
"But," Suguha began, "You're my brother!"
Kazuto laughed that off, he now knew that it wasn't true.
"Hey, Asuna!" Suguha cheered.
Asuna smiled, "Hello!"
Kazuto and Asuna crossed the threshold of the house. They then went into the kitchen and sat right next to each other.
Suguha asked, "Would you like some tea?"
"Why not?" Kazuto shrugged.
Asuna replied, "Yes, please!"
Suguha walked into the kitchen and pulled out the tea kettle. She then pulled out the green tea leaves and set it on the counter. Then, she walked over to the sink to fill the tea kettle with water. After that, she set it on the stove and turned on the burner. Finally, she walked over to the dining table and sat across from Kazuto.
"How was school?" Suguha asked.
"It was good," Asuna started, "I aced my math quiz and I ate some sushi!"
Suguha nodded and then turned her head to Kazuto.
Kazuto remarked, "Everyone was spreading rumors about me."
"What did they say about you?" Asuna asked.
"They said that I was brought to the principal's office today for doing PDA with you," Kazuto explained.
Asuna laughed, "That is true!"
Kazuto went on, "That wasn't the case, I was brought to the principal's office for information about a DNA test."
"A DNA test?!" Suguha screamed, "But you're my brother!"
Kazuto looked down and let out a small laugh.
'She's wrong.' Kazuto thought.
"What are you laughing about?" Suguha asked.
"The truth is," Kazuto began, "I'm not your brother."
Silence filled the air as Suguha started to form a look of shock on her face. Asuna remained with a normal look on her face. The silence was broken when there was a knock on the door.
Kazuto stated, "I'll get that."
Kazuto got up from his chair, walked over to the door, and opened it.
"Hello, son." Rinko greeted.
Kazuto replied, "Hey, come in."
Rinko walked with Kazuto into the dining room and sat down right across from Asuna.
"Kirito-kun," Asuna whispered.
Suguha demanded, "Who is this?"
"This is Rinko Kojirou," Kazuto introduced, "She is my biological mother."
A look of shock returned to Suguha's face and she passed out.
'Geez, now Sugu is passing out on me,' Kazuto thought.
Kazuto carried Suguha over to the couch and set her down. He went back into the dining room and sat next to Asuna.
Asuna asked, "What are you doing here, Ms. Kojiro?"
"Kikuoka told me where Kazuto was living," Rinko began, "so I thought that I'd pay him a visit."
Asuna nodded.
"Would you like some tea?" Kazuto asked.
"I would love to, my son!" Rinko stated.
The tea kettle was already hissing. Kazuto walked over to the kettle and set it down on the counter. From there, he put some green tea leaves in it and let it sit. After that, he got out three yonumis and poured an even amount of tea into each of them. He walked over to the dining table and set them down on the table.
"That was nice of you to make tea," Rinko remarked.
Kazuto laughed, "That wasn't me, it was Sugu."
"She's such a nice young girl!" Rinko commented.
Kazuto smiled, he was happy that Rinko thinks highly of Sugha.
He sat down in a chair at the dining table in the dining room and grabbed his yonumi of tea. He blew onto the surface of the yonumi and took a small sip.
'This tea ain't half bad' Kazuto thought.
Rinko smiled, "This is some great tea!"
"I agree!" Asuna added in.
Kazuto replied, "It was nothing, really."
Rinko reached into her purse and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She set it on the table, unfolded it, and passed the paper to Asuna.
Asuna smiled, "I already knew he was your son."
"You're such an intelligent girl!" Rinko remarked, "you're perfect for my son!"
Asuna blushed a bright red and pouted.
Kazuto thought, 'She's got Asuna embarrassed now.'
"Cut it with the flatteries," Kazuto began, "Now's not the time."
Rinko nodded.
The room filled with silence once again and it was broken when there was a knock on the door. Rinko got up, went over to the door, and opened it.
"Oh hey Kaz-" Midori began.
Rinko greeted, "Oh, h-"
Midori and Rinko looked at each other with shock on their faces. They both thought that they'd never see each other again, but that was proven to be wrong.
"Rinko?"
"Midori?"
The two women stared each other down with a stare that could break through glass.
"You got some nerve coming back here!" Midori yelled.
Rinko replied, "Listen, I don't want to cause you any issues."
"I'm giving you 30 seconds to explain!" Midori stated.
Rinko explained, "I have scoured the web in search of my long lost son and I later receive an email from Akihiko Kayaba that he's found my son living in Japan. I packed my bags and moved back to Japan. I talked with Kikuoka, found that Kazuto was playing ALO at that time, hopped in the game, and met with him there. A DNA test was taken and it turns out that I'm his mother."
"I never knew that son you had was actually Kazuto," Midori replied.
Rinko brought Midori to the dining table and directed for her to sit down.
Kazuto got up and poured some green tea for his adopted mother. He set it down on the table and smiled at Midori.
"When I was in ALO," Kirito began, "King Midhir claimed to be Akihiko Kayaba and he then brought me to my cabin after that."
"Akihiko is alive?!" Midori & Rinko shouted in unison.
"No way! That was him?!" Asuna added in.
Kazuto shrugged, saying, "Apparently so and I'm just as confused as you were."
"We need to log in and see if that's true!" Rinko demanded.
Kazuto and Asuna both nodded.
"Before you do that," Midori began, "let's have some dinner."
Midori made dinner and served it to the people at the table. As they ate dinner, Rinko asked Kazuto and Asuna questions about their time in SAO. But one question gave Midori quite a surprise.
"How did you meet your daughter, Yui?" Rinko asked them.
Kazuto did a spit take all over Suguha's face.
"Onii-san!" Sugu shouted.
"W-What?!" Midori yelled, her eyes wide in surprise. "You two have a daughter and didn't tell me!?"
"I-I... uh..." Kazuto stuttered, his cheeks red, before he looked at Asuna silently asking, 'Please help.'
Asuna smiled and explained, "It was on Floor 22 where our in-game home is now. While on a walk, Kirito-kun and I came across Yui and we took her home. Next morning, she woke up and couldn't pronounce our names so instead she called us, 'Mommy' and 'Daddy.'"
"Is she a real person?" Midori asked curiously.
"She's an AI," Kazuto replied, before a sudden thought came to him. "But she does seem extremely human at times... Could Kaya- I mean Dad, have taken a child from its family or even an orphan to become part of the game like the other players?"
Rinko shook her head. "Kayaba was many things, but a kidnapper was not one of them. Although, I wouldn't be surprised though if one of his scientists did it."
Kazuto felt his phone vibrate in his pocket and when he checked it, he saw a message from Kikuoka.
"Me and Asuna need to go," Kazuto stated, as he got up.
"What? Why?" Rinko asked.
"Kikuoka needs to speak with us immediately," Kazuto replied.
"I'm going with you then," Rinko told him.
"It's fine Kaa-san," Kazuto replied with a small smile. Rinko's eyes widened at his words as one thought went through her head, 'H-he called me mom.'
"We'll call if we need help," Asuna told them, before looking at her boyfriend. "Let's go."
"Yeah, we will," Kirito agreed.
