Chapter 5
Princess Firefly! SHE'S SO CUTE!!!
"Hey! Not so fast peregrine!" Prince Shadowscale called as he beat his wings to catch up to his friend. "I'm not part SkyWing you know!"
The rusty red SkyWing whipped around and flew next to his friend. He slowed his flight to a slow, casual glide and smiled sheepishly towards his friend.
"Sorry." He said. "I'm used to flying with other SkyWings, of who... well... are all really fast. So, I kinda have to also fly that fast too."
"Yeah, I know." Shadowscale replied with a sigh. "Guess we can never do races... I'll always loose!"
They both laughed at that as they flew above the thick canopy of trees together. "It's incredible how small the mountains look from this far away." Peregrine said after a small while, slowing to a hover to admire the scene.
"I envy you, you know." Shadowscale replied with another sigh causing Peregrine to turn towards him with a raised eyebrow. "I never left the Rainforest. I have no idea how the outside world looks like. Then again, I just turned three but still... you have already been to more places than I have..."
"It's not as good as you think." It was Peregrine's turn to sigh. "My parents want me to be like them. Soldiers, under the service of Queen Ruby. But... I don't want that. I mean, I don't mind fighting if I had my back against a wall. But I can't see me making fighting a lifestyle. I want to... No..." He shook his head and smiled. "You'll laugh."
"Come on." Shadowscale said, flying a bit closer to his friend. "You can tell me."
"Well... I wanna be a writer." Peregrine said, then stared intently at Shadowscale as if expecting him to laugh. Instead, Shadowscale looked at his friend with awe.
"THAT'S SO COOL!!! Why would I think that's stupid, or funny? Writers are creative and awesome! I LOVE reading! I'd choose a good book over socializing with other dragons any day!" The Prince exclaimed. Peregrine gave him a grateful smile.
"So." The SkyWing started with a grin. "Am I an exception though?"
"NOPE!" Shadowscale replied defiantly, then stuck out his tongue and darted off.
"HEY!" Peregrine called out with a chuckle of his own and darted after the prince. "TAKE THAT BACK OR I WON'T GIVE YOU A FREE COPY OF MY BOOK!"
"CATCH ME FIRST!" Shadowscale declared then plunged into the forest. Peregrine rolled his eyes and darted after him, expecting this to be easy. After all, he IS a SkyWing, and speed was his greatest advantage. Though his fire was significantly weaker due to his IceWing blood, his wings where just as large, muscular, and powerful as any other SkyWings'.
However, he soon realized that flying in the forest itself was harder than he expected. He kept flying into vines and branches, narrowly missing a head-on collision with a tree trunk once or twice as he tried to catch up to the NightWing/RainWing prince. Rather than being annoyed by the fact that he couldn't catch up to Shadowscale, Peregrine marveled at how he moved through the forest with such ease and grace at such a young age. Using his tail to wrap around vines and branches and swing off, gliding only for a short distance before either jumping on larger branches or swinging again with his tail.
Shadowscale finally stopped in a small clearing, panting slightly as he analyzed his surroundings. There was a small creek before him, that started from the north and trailed south, vanishing into the foliage before he can see where it ended. There where banana trees as well as a coconut and oddly, a tangerine tree along with the many tropical trees that surrounded him. There was also a strawberry bush to his right and a blackberry to his left. He made his way towards the stream, took out a canteen he keeps under his left wing, and filled it with some water and drank. Relief flooded through his entire body as the satisfying, cold liquid flowed down his throat and into his empty belly. He then turned his attention to the tangerine tree, and debated whether he wanted one of those, or a strawberry. He could hear Peregrine getting closer, and knew he had to decide on the whim.
He jumped up and snatched a larger tangerine from the tree and slashed open the peel with his talon, then plopped the fruit into his mouth and began to chew.
He's had many fruits in his life, and very rarely has he encountered one that he absolutely despised. But out of all of them, he had to admit that the tangerine was his favorite. Strawberry being a close second, and pomegranate being a closer third. He loved the tangy, citrus sting that was in perfect sync with the sweetness of the fruit. If he had to choose a single fruit that he must eat forever, no others just that one, he'd choose the tangerine without hesitation.
He has his back to me! He won't see me coming! Peregrine thought as he hunched low behind a banana tree. Shadowscale swallowed his tangerine and gave a small smile, knowing full well what his friend was planning. I'll stay until the last second, then, I'll jump away, he thought strategically as he made his way towards a strawberry bush, looking completely unaware of his friend's hiding place. He picked up a strawberry and plopped it into his mouth just as Peregrine pounced. Shadowscale bolted left and jumped into the air, causing the SkyWing to pounce on air.
"How!?" He yelled as he shot after the prince. Shadowscale only laughed in response as he flew back in the direction of the village with Peregrine in hot pursuit. He gained on the prince quickly, and quite effortlessly. He grabbed the prince's tail and smirked victoriously. Pain erupted from Shadowscale's temples as a darkness began to engulf him.
NO! Not now! Why? He thought as his mind submerged completely.
It was a different vision than those before. He stood in a dark cave with an unfamiliar amulet around his neck.
"Stop! What are you planning on accomplishing by doing this!?" Future him exclaimed as he stared at a blurry form in the distance. Whoever it was, gave no response. He scanned the room and saw another four blurry shapes beside him, but there where two dragons he could see clearly. One was a dragon who sat in the center of the room. A NightWing with colorful scales under his wings and a terrified look on his face as he glanced between the blurred shape Shadowscale had shouted to, and the Prince himself.
The other, was an older Peregrine. He was the third largest shape in the room, the first being a blurry pale golden blur that Shadowscale assumed was a SandWing, the second being the NightWing in the center. He was hunched low in a battle position, ready to fight the unclear foe.
"Peregrine." Older Shadowscale muttered as he turned to his best friend. "Don't. She has powers, you won't win."
He grabbed the amulet and clutched it in his talons. "I must face her, the fate of Pyrrhia depends on it."
The SkyWing flicked his tail and narrowed his eyes at the foe.
"Peregrine." Shadowscale warned as the SkyWing took a menacing step forward. "Stay back and tend to Da..." The name became distorted, but it caused the SkyWing to snap out of it and glance up at Shadowscale.
"NO! I WILL NOT let you face that monster alone!" The other blurred voices seemed to protest with him, though he couldn't exactly make out what they where saying.
"I know, I know. But what's the point if you're just going to get yourself killed!? Protect the others, I must face her alone."
"But-"
"Peregrine, if you die, I will never forgive myself. You are my best friend, I can't-"
"YOU'RE A PRINCE! IF YOU DIE-"
"The tribe will be alright, they need a queen, not a King. This is something I must do. For our families, for our tribes, and for Pyrrhia as a whole. We cannot let her bring him back! This is what I trained with my father for. To prepare me for this moment."
Peregrine paused for a bit, there was more indistinct voices speaking, but Shadowscale wasn't a strong enough seer to make them out yet.
"Fine." Peregrine decided, taking a few steps backwards. "But you better not die. Or I will kill you."
Shadowscale just smiled sadly towards his friend before turning back towards the figure ahead. He glanced down at the amulet around his neck one last time, before beginning forward. With each step, the vision became darker and darker, till it vanished all together.
~☆~
"HA! Now you HAVE to take-"
He was cut off as Shadowscale roared in pain and began to flail. Shocked by the sudden turn, Peregrine and let go of his tail. Is he just playing? If so, this is NOT funny!
But he wasn't, his talons began to twitch, his body began to spasm and he fell from the sky. The SkyWing becoming terrified, he had no idea what to do, only scream the RainWing/NightWing prince's name as he plummeted towards the thicket below.
Suddenly, a large shadow launched out of the trees and grabbed the prince, zipping into the forest again just as fast as it came. Peregrine shook himself from his shock and fear and plummeted after them.
"HEY! Come on! Get up! Please!" Peregrine heard a female voice plea as he landed. Upon hearing him, she turned towards the SkyWing, her face unsurprised by his arrival. She was a NightWing, a full one by how she had the normal silver scales rather than colorful.
"Hello, Peregrine." She said then turned her attention back towards the Prince. Peregrine ran beside her and stared down at his friend. Prince Shadowscale was mumbling indistinctly under his breath and his talons still twitched rapidly. He almost looked like a normal NightWing, for every color-changing scale was white with pain.
"What... what's wrong with him? We where just playing I-"
"I know." She interrupted, turning her attention back towards him with a kind smile. Only then, did he notice her silver scales by her eyes. "I am Moonwatcher, and by the look on your face, it seems you've heard of me?"
"Yeah." Peregrine said, sighing with relief. "So, you do know it wasn't my fault!"
She nodded.
"My parents heard about you from-"
"Queen Ruby, who heard about my powers from Peril? Yes, I am reading your mind, sorry. It's still a little hard for me when there is so little dragons around. I foresaw this, well, a version where Shadowscale plummeted to his death and a war broke out between SkyWings and Glory's subjects that would have ultimately began a second great war... but I prevented it so don't worry. And no, it wasn't your fault. He... suffers from major migraines. Their sudden, very sudden."
"Oh." Peregrine whispered, feeling slightly better, yet still concerned. "Why is he mumbling and twitching like that?"
"He is in a lot of pain, some handle it differently. He'll be fine in a bit." She replied, sitting down and staring down at him with concern.
"I hope so." Peregrine replied, sitting down beside her. Waiting, hoping that his friend will get better.
When Shadowscale opened his eyes, Peregrine flushed with relief.
"Hey, how are you feeling?" He asked.
Shadowscale glanced from his friend to secret teacher, then back again.
I told him you get migraines out of no where. I didn't tell him. You must be the one to do so.
Thank you Moon. I'll share my vision with you later.
She nods, though to Peregrine, it looked like a light bow. Then mumbled, "I must be going." Then took off towards the village.
"Fine, now. I hope that didn't scare you. Sorry." Shadowscale said with a reluctant smile.
Peregrine waved off the apology. "No need, you can't control it."
"I meant for not warning you. They are rare, but when they do hit, their bad." He said. "My migraines? Did Moonwatcher tell you or-"
"Yes, she did, and it's alright. We should get you back though, just in case you get another."
"Yeah." Shadowscale said as Peregrine started off in the same direction as Moonwatcher. "Good idea."
And with that said, he rose and began to follow close behind.
