Chapter 11

Again, colored, but not completely. This is a Starspeaker dragonet, Scrollreader! I wanted her to look like Starflight but have the scattered scales of Fatespeaker! So I took the already colored reference of Starflight from the Wiki (cause what's the point of doing all that work if it's just going to look the same anyways?), colored over the eye wrappings then slapped a transparent NightWing head on him and colored the eyes so they are green. Then I added the scattered stars onto his body and there. Starflight transformed into Scrollreader! I'm sorry I've only been doing references, but I started thinking, "why should I draw non-main OCs who are also pure bred when I could just use the references?"  Plus, I can't do art when I'm not in the "mood" so yeah. If I'm still feeling uninspired, I might do a reference of Nightshade. Idk though... we'll see.

The stone beneath Shadowscale's talons where surprisingly cold, despite this spot being at an angle where it should have received full sun from dawn to now, the afternoon.

"Oh wow!" Peregrine marveled when his talons touched the ground. "Why so cold?"

"Perhaps it had something to do with the group of IceWings who where here mere minutes before we came close?" Nightshade offered as she was last to touch down. She turned to them with her emotionless dark violet orbs, her mind only a light hum that has never relented her innermost secrets to the mind-reader for as long as he's known her.

"What? I didn't see any IceWings." Peregrine replied skeptically. Shadowscale was in agreement with his friend, though he wasn't paying as much attention as she, so he didn't voice his opinions. Her mind and face relieved nothing still, it was always a mystery to the prince, until he brought it up one day with Moonwatcher.

"Does she wear any jewelry? Anything made from a black stone?" She had asked.

"She has a necklace, a leather strap with a curved obsidian dagger attached to it. A real dagger though. Not a jewel shaped like one." He replied.

"It might be Skyfire, ask if you can look at it or touch it, if your mind feels closed off to everyone, the that should prove that it is."

And the next day, he did just that. He grabbed her necklace and the feeling was just as Moonwatcher described. Eerie silence, almost maddening, the chatter he was used to hearing was gone, leaving emptiness. It was truly unnerving and he quickly handed it back as he wondered, is that how a normal dragon's mind feels like? But ever since, it made since why he could never hear her, only sense her presence. It was because it wasn't an obsidian dagger she carried around her neck, but a perfectly shaped Skyfire dagger.

"You couldn't see them, unless you knew how to look." She replied, ripping the prince from his thoughts as she continued. "Their scales reflected the sun, glittering blindingly. I hate the sun... to bright..."

Peregrine and Shadowscale turned to her with surprise written all over their faces.

"But... I thought RainWings liked the sun..." Peregrine muttered, glancing towards the prince as if hoping for a confirmation. Shadowscale nodded slightly, indicating that he was correct.

"Most do." She said, her scales flashing with irritated orange, she didn't bother trying to blot it out. "But I hate it. I prefer darkness and shadows."

"Come on, we should push on..." Shadowscale said, staring at the entrance of the academy with a feeling of unease. What did that SandWing want? Why did she lead me here? He shook himself from these thoughts and started forward, his two companions following.

"You know, I wanted to come here. Jade Mountain Academy I mean. Instead, my parents signed me up for training..." Peregrine huffed, then grumbled some choice words about his parents under his breath, but Shadowscale heard it all.

"Don't get me wrong, their great!"  He added. "It's just... I wish they'd listen to what I want rather than making me do what they want.-"

"WHOA!" The trio heard a dragon yelp before them, causing Shadowscale to immediately halt and the three soon afterwards. A small SeaWing dragonet scrambled back, staring at them with large, frightened blue/green eyes. She was a dark, royal blue with light blue, almost white, under-scales and a light mint green color for her e bioluminescent stripes. She reminded the prince of a tiger cub, beautiful, adorable, and will grow up to be dangerous.

"Wash wewe yous go!" She exclaimed. "Yous squish me an mommy's be vewy VEWY mad!"

"Oh, sorry..." Shadowscale said with a slight bow of his head, he then cocked his head to the right. "How... old are you?"

"I's two!" She replied, holding up two talons to emphasize her point.

"Aren't you a little young to be going here? I thought the youngest was four-"

"I's not suden" She said. "I's Sunumi's daughter!"

"Oh! Princess Tsunami?" Peregrine asked.

"YEP! I's woyal!" She replied proudly, holding up her wings and nearly blinding the three with her royal swirls underneath. "I's woyal and I's stron and pwetty!"

"I'm royal too." Prince Shadowscale said to the little blue SeaWing. His voice gently and sweet. "I am Prince Shadowscale of the RainWings and NightWings. My mother is your mother's friend, Queen Glory."

The little dragonet's eyes sparkled as they widened. "Ooooo."

She immediately hugged his front leg and smiled up at him. He smiled back down at her, keeping his mind focused on Nightshade's buzzing mind so he wouldn't intrude on her mind. Though, the next thing she said, he wished he was prepared for.

"Wills yous mawwy me?"

Every color shifting scale on the prince's body turned pink as his smile immediately shifted to highly confused.

"What!?"

Peregrine started to die of laughter and Nightshade's scales shifted to an amused yellow.

"Well," She started with a hint of amusement in her tone. "Seems you have an admirer. Don't invite me to your wedding."

"SEASPRAY! WHAT IN THREE MOONS- GET OFF HIM THIS INSTANT!" A voice roared. Shadowscale looked up to see a NightWing coming their way. She was a pretty dragon herself, and much older than the dragonet wrapped around his arm. She had midnight black, with shiny pale grey under-scales and the silver scales under her wings sprayed outward like a splash of water. She had bright green eyes and scattered silver scales on her tail as well as two small silver scales by her eyes.

"NO!" Princess Seaspray roared as she hugged Shadowscale tighter. "WE'S GET MAWWY!"

"HE DOESN'T WANT TO MARRY YOU! NOW GET OFF BEFORE I SET YOUR TAIL ON FIRE!"

"NO!" She replied again, eyes gleaming. The new midnight dragonet inhaled and angled her head down at the small SeaWing's small tail, showing that she wasn't bluffing. Seaspray's eyes widened with fear for a split second. She let go of Shadowscale and scurried off down the hallway as far a possible before turning around and yelling. "I's tell mommy!"

"Sure!" The midnight dragonet replied as she rolled her eyes, "And she'd tell you to stop harassing EVERY royal dragon who sets talon into this mountain!"

"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" Seaspray cried as she vanished from sight.

Shadowscale turned to Peregrine, who was still rolling on the floor laughing, and sighed. "Okay, fun's over, you can stop now!"

"MY SIDES! AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! MY- OWE! HAHAHA! OW! OH!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAA!" Peregrine continued.

"Breath SkyWing." Nightshade instructed in her low, smooth voice. He took her advice and slowly began to calm down to fits of giggles. Shadowscale rolled his eyes and turned his attention back to the midnight colored NightWing.

He's so pretty! Her mind screamed as she successfully hid her thoughts from her face.

Shadowscale mentally sighed, pretty? Why not ever, undragonly handsome? Awesomely Dashing? Oh great! I am starting to sound like my father! But... is that really a bad thing?

"First off, thank you." He said gratefully. "Secondly, does she do that a lot? And thirdly, who are you? I don't recognize you from the Rainforest..."

She smiled at him knowingly and chuckled. "Firstly, you are welcome. Secondly, you have NO IDEA! And thirdly, my name is Scrollreader, and I am the daughter of Starflight and Fatespeaker."

"Oh, so, you'tr parents are also dragonets of Destiny? I mean... Fatespeaker wasn't but Starflight was..."

She chuckled again and cocked her head. He IS kinda cute, shy and... His voice is nice sounding too...

"Welcome to Jade Mountain! What brings you here?" She asked.

"RainWing hybrids are missing from the Rainforest." Shadowscale said, trying to ignore her mind rambling about how nice looking he is. Her smile faded as a look of shock and horror took it's place.

"OH! THAT'S TERRIBLE!!!" She exclaimed. "Are you here to warn the our staff?"

"Yes, and check on any hybrids who might have come here." Shadowscale said. "We don't know if they are only targeting hybrids with RainWing blood, but if you have any here, I'd like to check on them first."

Scrollreader nodded. "Well attendance records are tended to by my mother and father, they could help you locate anyone.I can show you the way, if you don't know where to go."

Please say no, please say no, PLEASE say you don't know where to go..

Shadowscale internally sighed again. "No, I don't-"

"WONDERFUL!" She exclaimed excitedly. "It's this way, follow me!"

The three went after her, after a few minutes of walking in silence, she slowed her pace so she walked beside Shadowscale and started talking again. "I know there is one RainWing, SeaWing hybrid named Beroida, but I am pretty sure she's fine and well. Also, Queen Coral and Ruby are here today, they like to come to Jade Mountain to drink tea and swap mothering and queenly stories-"

"Oh, then I need to speak with Queen Coral as well." Shadowscale replied. "Her granddaughter Coy is missing, and you said Beroida is here? That's Coy's sister!"

"Coy? I KNOW COY!" Scrollreader wailed with shock in her eyes. "Coy came last year, all smiles and kindness and VERY extroverted. Reminded me of Sunny in some ways. Opposite of her sister, Beroida is introverted and I wouldn't be surprised if she is also in the library. She is most the time, just reading, which I don't mind, I like to read beside her. She's a sweetheart, and so is her sister. I am so sad to hear about what happened to her..."

Poor Coy... Did he like her? Like... like, like her? NO! Don't get jealous! That's not nice, she's missing and THAT'S BAD!

"Who else is missing?"

"A five year old RainWing/NightWing hybrid named Leopard, another named Daydreamer, who is seven, and an eleven year old named Peacemaker, and an egg-"

"WHO IS SO EVIL TO STEAL AN EGG!?" Scrollreader wailed as she stopped and whipped around to Shadowscale causing him to halt too. Her eyes showing that her despair is legitimate.

"I don't know." Shadowscale replied, his face falling as he looked away. "But we are going to figure out who is behind this and why, no matter what."

So heroic! She thought as she entwined her tail around his.

"You'll find them" She outwardly said, making it seem like her show of affection was for reassurance. "I know it."

"Thank you... um... can we get going now? Race against time, life or death... you know?"

"Huh? OH right!" She replied as she reluctantly let go of his tail and hurried forward. "Come on, the library isn't that far ahead now."

WHY DID I DO THAT!!!!! Was it obvious? Think, think, think-

"Again, sorry about Seaspray. She is the second youngest of four. Tsunami and Riptide's oldest being Prince Seagull, who is five. I'm older than him being six and a half. He is more like his mother, and looks a lot like her too! He is impatient and strong, but he also likes to make friends with everyone. Their second oldest is Aquamarine, who we all just call Aqua. She is quiet and reserved, nothing like Tsunami at all. More like Beroida, she is four. Their youngest is Emerald who is five months old. She is a feisty, ravenous ball of energy and is by far, the most like her mother. But then again, she's only five months old so... it's too early to tell EXACTLY how she'll be... Oh! We're here!"

She stopped by the entrance to a side corridor lined with hanging scrolls. "My father is over there at the circular desk labeled 'Librarian.' He should help you, I will also see about finding my mom, she should be nearby. Anyways, good luck! Oh! And I'll also see about bringing Beroida here as well. To make things easier. Okay bye!" And with that said, she turned around and pushed past the three dragons.

That was... weird. Peregrine thought as he watched her disappear. Shadowscale silently agreed as he and the rest began to move forward.

At the hall opened up into a massive room full of iridescent green light. At first, Shadowscale was confused by this, then he noticed the windows where all covered with tree leaves. In here, scrolls were everywhere, in cubbyholes on the walls, racks, and cylinders around the cave. There could have easily been thousands of scrolls in here, and it left the tree in awe. There was a comfortable place to read just about anywhere there wasn't a place holding scrolls, a rock ledge here, a pile of moss there, some beds made of reeds and a little bit of carpets scattered about. most of the light was produced by sunlight coming down from skylights in the roof, again filtered through leaves covering them. Then they noticed it. The circular wooden desk labeled 'LIBRARIAN' in the center.

The dragon behind it had midnight-black scales with hints of purple within them and shiny pale silver under scales. The silver scales on the underside of his wings spray outward like a splash of water, just like Scrollreader. Unlike his daughter, Starflight wore a blindfold over his eyes, most likely to cover up the scars he received long ago.

The three of them made their way towards the blind dragon, causing him to perk up at the sound of their approach.

"Hello? Are you new students? I don't recognize the sounds of your talonsteps-"

"No, hello Uncle Starflight." Shadowscale replied with a smile, though he knew the blind dragon couldn't see it.

"Oh, SHADOWSCALE! What are you doing here, Come over here and give me a hug!" He exclaimed with a large smile as he extended his arms towards the prince. Shadowscale smiled as he embraced his mother's friend. Instantly, fond memories of his younger years flooded back to him, specifically, the memories of when he was one years old and Starflight taught him how to read and write. Though he was blind, he gave Shadowscale a scroll and sat down with the young dragonet for hours. Shadowscale traced letters into Starflight's palm, and then the older dragon would tell him what it was. Then, when he spelt out an entire word, he would tell the young dragonet the word it self and it's definition.

They released and he smiled down at the young dragon. "My you've grown! It's really been that long? How old are you now? Four? Five?"

"Eight"

"THREE MOONS! EIGHT!? My! I feel so old! It seemed like only yesterday Glory, Tsunami, Clay, Sunny and myself escaped from beneath this very mountain! So, what brings you to Jade Mountain? Who are your friends?"

"Well, introductions first. Is Peregrine. He is a third IceWing and has rust red scales with darker colored talons and along his back. His wing membrane is a pale yellow-ish cream along with his under-scales. He has moss colored eyes and looks almost completely SkyWing except for the thicker spikes around his neck and he isn't as slender. He's a tiny bit taller than me."

He paused and watched as Starflight pieced together Peregrine's looks within his mind until a nearly identical re-rendering was created in his mind's eye. The colors being slightly off but other than that, it was near perfect.

"The other is Nightshade. She is a full RainWing but she tends to stay dark, NightWing like colors. Mostly black but I've seen her have bits of dark maroon deep within. Currently, she is black with silver under-scales and speckles of yellow, orange, and pink splattered on her like a painting- aaaaaaaaand those are gone now."

Starflight chuckled as he placed together Nightshade with much more ease than Peregrine, getting her spot on.

"And now... for the reason we are here..." Shadowscale said with a sigh. "I must say, it's quite unpleasant"

"Oh dear..." Starflight muttered as he lifted his head and sighed. "What is it?"

"Hybrids." Shadowscale started. "RainWing hybrids are going missing."
