30. Seeing Him Again

The loud buzzing dragged me from my sleep. I lifted my arm and swatted at my alarm clock, but even after hitting it three times the buzzing continued. As my brain became more aware of what was happening, I realised that the noise was coming from the door buzzer.

I crawled out of bed and staggered over to the front door.

"Yeah?" I said into the handset.

"Were you still asleep?" asked Jay. "Just hurry up and let us in."

I sighed, then padded barefoot over to the couch before collapsing into it. The door opened a few moments later, and Maria walked in followed by Jay. He was carrying a cup of coffee in each hand, and smiling rather engagingly.

"I brought you coffee, and good news," he said, as he handed me one of the takeout cups.

I lifted the plastic lid and took a sniff. It was a latte, with a few extra pumps of caramel syrup. Just how I liked it.

"Thanks. What's the news?" I asked.

"We arrested Lucas Salvatore this morning," said Maria. "The team of divers found a body in the river, and based on the evidence you gave us, we know it's the woman that Lucas killed."

They had found Desirée. I felt strangely relieved at that thought. The idea of that poor woman being dumped in the river and lost had made me upset. At least now she would have a chance of a proper funeral.

"But Dominic could be vulnerable now," said Jay. "He will be so distracted by his son being arrested, this could be your chance to get the evidence we need."

"It could," I said, though I wasn't really convinced.

"That's why you need to move quickly," said Jay. "We've got something else for you to use, err, somewhere."

He placed his coffee cup down on the table and started checking through his pockets. "Have you got it, babe?" Jay asked Maria.

She reached into the inside pocket of her jacket and pulled out a small USB thumb drive. "This? You left it in the car," Maria said, then she winked at me before rolling her eyes dramatically.

"Oh, yeah. I meant for you to pick that up," said Jay. "Anyway, it's got some spy software on there. You just have to plug it into any computer and it will install the software to let our tech department access the computer remotely. Then we can backdoor it and download any incriminating evidence we find."

I nodded like I understood what Jay was saying. "So you want me to stick this in Dominic's PC?" I asked.

"Yeah, but don't leave it in there," said Maria. "Just plug it in for about thirty seconds, then take it out again. That is all."

"Okay, that sounds simple enough," I said.

"Great," said Jay. "So if we can just leave that with you, we've got to get back down the the Salvatore's warehouse."

"No problem," I said. I mean, it sounded like something I would be able to manage without messing it up.

"Well, just let me know when you have done it," said Jay.

Then he picked up his coffee cup and headed out the door. Maria came over and gave me a quick hug, and whispered "good luck," into my ear. Then she went off and followed Jay down the stairs.

Once they had gone, I flopped back down on the sofa and finished my coffee. I knew they said it was best to move quickly, but they probably didn't mean that literally. Plus I would need a shower first before I went to see Dominic.

About four hours later, I was just heading out of my apartment and getting a taxi over to Dominic's house. The new task to focus on had given me renewed energy and drive.

My backpack was on my lap, my hands clasped tightly around it. Inside, I had my gun, and the USB thing that Jay had given me. I wasn't sure if I would be able to use either of them, but it was better to be ready for anything.

When the taxi came to a stop, I took a moment to look across the road before getting out. The Salvatore house looked quiet, though there were still a couple of guys standing outside looking conspicuous with their suits and sunglasses on. I recognised one of them as the security guard that had stopped me the last time I visited. I hoped he would remember me too, and let me in without too much trouble.

After I had crossed the road, I walked up the sidewalk towards the house. As I got closer, the security guy held up his arm to stop me. I came to a halt in front of him, as he whispered something into his sleeve. It only took a moment before he put his arm down again and nodded at me.

"Is it okay to go in?" I asked.

The guy rolled his eyes at me. "Yes," he sighed.

I started to walk timidly up the steps to the front door. Before I reached the top, the door opened and I was greeted by another security guy.

"Umm, hi. I was here to see Mr Salvatore," I said.

This guy just nodded at me too. "In his office. Third floor," he said, and gestured towards the elevator.

He didn't seem like he was looking for a conversation or anything from me, so I shuffled quickly over to the elevator doors and pressed the call button. They opened almost immediately, so I stepped inside and pressed the button for the third floor.

When the elevator doors opened again, I stepped out into the hallway and looked around. I had been on the third floor before, so I knew which door was a bathroom, and I was fairly sure which door was Dominic's bedroom. The only thing I wasn't sure was which door would be his office.

There was only one way to find out; randomly opening doors until I found the right one.

The first door I opened was another bedroom. This one was quite messy, with loads of clothes dumped on the bed. It must be Lucas's room, as they looked like his kind of clothes. It was interesting, but not what I was looking for, so I quickly closed the door again.

I went across the hallway to the door opposite, and opened it. As I did, I saw the room behind it looked kind of like a small library. There was a large desk in the centre of the room, and Dominic was standing next to it. He was with that guy Giulio, who I met before. And they seemed to be hugging each other.

As they heard the door open, they both look startled and jumped apart.

I looked awkwardly around the room, rather than at the two of them. I kind of felt like I had interrupted something, but I wasn't sure what. It was a pretty cool room though, like one of those libraries you get in the old fashioned houses. All the walls were covered in shelves of old books.

I looked closer at the shelf nearest to me to see what kind of books there were. They seemed to be proper books, I recognised the titles of some Shakespeare plays, and some novels by Charles Dickens. Though when I looked closer, I noticed they were all kind of dusty, like no one had touched them for a long time.

"Olivia. What are you doing here?" Dominic asked, once he had composed himself.

"I, umm, heard that Lucas was in trouble. I came to see if you were okay?" I said.

Dominic sighed loudly, then walked around and sat behind the desk. "Yes, he's been arrested," he said, quietly.

"Oh. Did he do something bad?" I asked, trying to sound as innocent as possible.

Dominic stared blankly at the desk in front of him without responding. Giulio walked over and gently placed his hand on Dominic's shoulder.

"Someone snitched to the cops. They grabbed him along with a few of our other guys," said Giulio, with an angry growl.

The cold grip of fear took hold of my chest. I had to remain calm and not react. I tried to put on my best poker face. I mean, I had never actually played poker or anything, but I knew the theory. Just stay calm and don't react.

Even though my expression stayed blank, I couldn't stop my hands from reacting. I gripped my bag tightly, my hands reaching towards the gun I had hidden in there. Ready to defend myself if I needed to.

"Who would do something like that?" I said.

Giulio scoffed loudly. "Bah, it could be anyone," he said. "The dumb kid has been bragging to anyone that would listen about how he took out Tony's killer."

Dominic shook his head and looked down at his desk. He looked so sad that I felt an uncontrollable desire to reassure him and make him feel better. I walked around the other side of the desk and came to stand next to him, and on the opposite side of Giulio. Then I put my arm around Dominic, and pulled him over slightly to rest his head on my chest and give him a hug.

"I'm sure he will be okay," I said softly into Dominic's ear.

Dominic sighed again, then I felt his arm move to go around my waist. His hand snaked down towards my butt and gave it a firm squeeze. I gave a little squeak in response, which made Dominic give a satisfied groan and squeeze harder on my butt.

Giulio scowled at me when he saw what was happening. It seemed like he didn't approve of me. Maybe he suspected me of telling the police about Lucas? I looked away so I wouldn't have to make eye contact with him.

Dominic turned to look at Giulio. "Leave us," he said. "And tell the others we are not to be disturbed."

Giulio didn't look happy with this order, but after a minute he grunted and nodded his head. "Yes, boss," he said.

Giulio then stomped out of the room and shut the door firmly behind him.

Dominic's hand started stroking up and down on my butt. "Well now we are alone, come and sit on me," he said. Then he spun me around and pulled me so that I sat down on his lap.
