"What is that?" I asked, moving closer (if that was possible) to Codd.
"Oh my Ilúvatar." Codd said absentmindedly. "We have to see Denethor."
Codd grabbed my hand and raced off, dragging me behind him.
The guards didn't want to let us in.
"It's an emergency! Tell me you didn't see that!" Codd said, pointing Eastward.
"He won't listen..."
"I don't care! Let us in!" I'd never heard Codd so angry before.
The guards reluctantly opens the doors.
"What are you doing in my halls at this late hour?"
"There is a light. It's coming from the Black Land."
Denethor said nothing.
"Did you hear me?" He shouted. "Do you know what that is?"
"It is nothing if no one saw it." The steward replied lazily.
Codd gritted his teeth. "What about tomorrow. When people do see it?"
"It will be daylight."
"Ugh! Have you not noticed the multiple orcs attacking the city? That must count for something!"
"It does not."Denethor had a sour look on his face. Like we were doing something wrong!
"You're joking, right? He's got to be joking."
"A king should not joke."
"You are not our king." I said. The first words I had uttered in a while.
Codd and I turned and strode out.
"We've got to tell someone who'll care! Where is Boromir?" I said.
"He left a while back, I think he's in Rivendell." Codd replied.
"What about Faramir?"
"Denethor will not listen to him."
I sighed.
"I'll try to warn everyone I can. You get home."
"Are you kidding?" I asked. "I'm coming too."
"No." Codd said, turning and grabbing my other hand. "Denethor won't be happy with me. I prefer if you're at home in case I get in trouble."
"But-"
"Go home."
I looked into Codd's eyes, and realized that he was right. I nodded. "Please be careful."
I ran the rest of the way home. I had no idea what that light was, but it seemed to be dangerous.
Mother was asleep when I returned. I didn't want to scare her, so I didn't tell her about the light coming from Mordor.
I headed to my small bedroom, but took a turn to Gyllyn's. I hopped onto his bed and curled up. I miss you. I thought. I hoped he'd get the message.
The next day, I went outside, wondering where Codd was and if he had been successful. I started asking people if they had seen him. Most of my neighbors said no.
I got to Ren's house and knocked on the door. Ms. Elendawen answered the door.
"Hey! I was wondering if Codd came here last night?" I asked politely.
Ms. Elendawen paled like she always did when something was wrong. "Oh, honey."
"What's wrong?" I began to panic. "Do you know what that light is?"
The woman nodded. "Come inside. There's something you should know."
