Chapter Fifteen - Anne Boleyn

For some time, they had spent time in England, together. She was planning her days, her last days before they set the date to change her. She did not want to rush and he had hoped it would stop her turning but her heart was set on it, she wanted to be with him forever, to love him forever but there were problems, problems they would face together. Soon they would have to leave England for a good few lifetimes, return to a new age, a new world with new order. With an outbreak of sickness, Valenus had to be careful, his frequent exposure to it but apparent immunity to it was enough to make most people worry.

"You worry too much" Nith whispered, reading the look on his face.

"I could not save the Carey boy, William. He passed but thankfully his wife is away... no doubt with His Majesty"

"Victor, we must keep our heads down, out of politics" Nith warned.

"Yes, I know. It is difficult to do, especially when the world is so corrupt"

She just held his hand as he avoided the sun, enough to stop himself burning completely but a little seemed to do him less harm than it once did. He stepped out, reaching out for the courier, carrying a little note. All a vampire had was time but not him, not without Nith and if anything, anything at all threatened that, he would destroy it. He loved the one person he cared about, Nith and because of that, he did not want to lose her, he could not afford to lose her, especially to what might have been.

"Do you know why I have said no to turning so soon?" she asked softly, the winds carrying her voice before he shut the door.

"No but I have a feeling you are going to tell me" he replied as he touched her pale, cold skin.

"Because, my love, you are to expect your first child, together. It seems when you were human, all of you was human, not just parts of you"

"Our kind, yours and mine... something else I shall treasure"

"Something we shall both treasure for it would be half of you and half of me" she whispered before he kissed her softly.

He forgot about the letter in those short moments but when it fell to the floor, he found himself remembering it. The fear struck him, struck his heart, making him frightened as he read every word. If there was life within him, in his cheeks and in his heart, it would have drained away. He looked at Nith, casting a glance of fear as he continued reading.

"What is it, my love?" Nith asked.

"It is the lady Boleyn, Anne, she is... sick"

"What is wrong with her?"

"The sweating sickness"

"Why does that matter?" Nith asked with concern lingering in her voice, trembling.

"Because if she lives, I shall be the enemy of the queen and favourited by the king, if she dies, the queen shall be a friend but the king shall have my head. Everyone notices, how he looks at her, at Anne, with such love and longing"

"Yes, that is true and the rumours are that he once looked at the queen like that. You must do your duty, my love, if not for me then for our child, our son or daughter"

"Our child... what will it be like? What skills will it possess?"

"Half of you and half of me... I do not know which half" Nith warned as he placed his hand on her masked bump"

"I should have seen it, perhaps I did... I just did not want to believe it"

She smiled and whispered "I have kept it from you... the last of my gifts, to shield its heartbeat until I was ready to tell you"

He smiled at her, a sign that all was forgiven. He had abstained from her blood for so long, he no longer craved it as much as he once did. When he met her, her blood was all he wanted but he loved her, he loved her too much to risk her life.

He did not tell her why he feared Anne so much, he saw her, visions of her sat beside Henry, as his wife with a bloated belly, pregnancy. He feared it, usually his visions were nothing good or meant nothing good. They were a warning, bad times ahead but he could not let her die, if she did, the king would surely look for his head and look to remove it from his neck. He was more frightened of what the king would do to Nith than him, if the king wanted vengeance, he would use Nith against him. He had to save Anne Boleyn, if he could... if only he could do it. He feared losing her, losing her would force himself to lose himself and the days would break, merge into the nights and he would merely feed off anyone who got in his horrific way.

He came to Anne's side, offering medicine and food to her as she sweat, covering the bedsheets in sweat as she lay there, panting. "I need to... be well... the king"

"I understand, my lady, the king has ordered me to be at your side, to take care of you. Just stay calm, the calmer you are, the better you shall be, I am sure of it". He washed her forehead in ice, cooling her down softly.

"My brother in law... what happened... to him?"

"He passed, my lady but I got him too late and I shall not lose you this night or any night from this sickness, do you understand?"

She just nodded. A few days later, he sat her up and gave her water and food, slowly helping her eat and drink, giving her strength as she drank. She looked stronger and stronger with each day, with each passing day. She could soon get up, walk around and a little after that, she was no longer declared ill and Valenus watched the smile on the king's face. All he had done was drag the marriage forward, despite him being catholic and already married, married to his queen, a woman from Spain that could have no other children, only a princess lived, Princess Mary.

Her connection to the throne was strong but his love for her? Was that stronger? Was he truly in love with Anne Boleyn, a woman he barely knew? He did not know her, he did not seem to care about most his mistresses, including her own sister, Mary but it seemed he was keeping Anne close, it was quite twisted but he was not worried, if the king liked Valenus, hopefully it would keep Nith safe.

Instead Anne just got closer to Nith, a little too close for comfort but he could not pull Anne away from Nith or Nith from Anne. He wanted to keep Anne as close as possible to him so he could keep Nith safe but the king was serious about divorcing the queen and naming Anne his queen. Whatever was happening, Valenus needed to jump right into it, to save her, his wife from everything, from every pain imaginable.

"Lady Isabella, you are so sweet" Anne commented as she left the house after a long, agonising conversation with Nith.

"How is the lady Anne?"

"She is fine, tired but recovered well, I must admit"

"Good, that is... good"

"My love... you are easy to read... like a book. You are so frightened but do not worry, she shall not know our secrets, we shall not let her in"

"It is not our secrets I am worried about. Your blood... your power comes from your blood, am I right?"

"I imagine so... the power of foresight is in the family"

"In the blood" he whispered. It finally hit him, his visions, his gifts were all because of her... her blood, he could see the future because she could also see the future. With her blood in his veins, he could do it, he could see the future and the pain one woman could bring, a lake of fire from one woman, with a face he did not recognise and Anne's hand ordering the execution of the woman he loved more than anything, more than life itself. The only way he could stop her was by killing the woman he hated, her hand would stretch out, point to Nith and name her a witch, making her a monster and a great evil.

The blood in his veins caused him pain, caused him to kill but there it was, the visions of power. He could see it, the visions of the future, the pain of them. He could see them, every vision in his mind, when he slept. Some of them came, some of them did not but all of them, some of them he stopped and some of them never came anyway. He smiled softly at some visions, visions of a child but cried at some of them, visions of his mother's death. The boy he saw in his vision with life, black hair and blue eyes, a bold child who knew right from wrong, like his mother.
