The Pretty Pick - 26
"Kid worships you dude" Steve turned to face Eddie while he spoke about Dustin, "same with her" he pointed ahead to Margaret, "in fact, he insisted on the fact I'd like her too, he bet I would actually" he didn't confirm whether or not he was correct.
Steve stood in silence simply smiling at Eddie's cluelessness.
It was obvious he cared for Margaret.
"Who jumped first?" Steve raised a brow looking ahead and diverting his eyes from Eddie, seeing him look his way in his peripheral, "who jumped in first to follow us?" He confirmed.
Eddie cleared his throat eyes widening.
"Ah well, I didn't really notice I uh-" his hand flew up to scratch the back of his neck.
"It was you wasn't it?" Eddie again tried to scoff it off, "look I know I fit into the dumb popular jock stereotype but it's only a stereotype" he creased his brows thinking big, "well for the most part" an awkward smile plastered on his face.
Eddie didn't really know how to respond, so he didn't. He knew he had jumped in first, Wheeler hadn't been far behind in fact he'd already heard her hit the water before he managed to open his eyes.
What he did know was how it was instinctive.
He seen Margaret getting pulled in and without any hesitation or anxious thought he dived in, if this had happened months ago, he would still have followed her in, because if he were honest with himself, he was never jealous of her skill level when they competed in musical exams, he was jealous that he couldn't be her friend. The older she got the more frustrated it made him, what made Jason and his friends so special? Why wasn't he special? He developed this disliking to her not because of her as a person, more her decisions. He just wanted her, and he wanted her to want him.
A bump of Steve's shoulder into Eddie snapped him from his thoughts.
"She cares about you too" Steve spoke up again, "I knew when we went looking for you, after Chrissy - you know?"
Eddies brows softened while he looked ahead.
She turned to take a glance at him while he was already looking at her.
"How did you uh- how'd you know?" He tried to make it sound like he hadn't been fussed, though Steve let out a small chuckle at his words. Eddie knew damn well he knew that he cared.
"Just the way she spoke, she wasn't angry at you for leaving her, she was-" he tried to think of the right word, "she was hurt, she needed you"
Eddie felt that same feeling he'd felt on and off this whole time.
Trying to change the subject Eddie bumped his arm and pointed Nancys way, "well Wheeler-" stopping mid sentence as the floor began to shake once again, everyone feeling their legs go beneath them, looking ahead he seen Nancy and Robin crouched down and Margaret by a tree alone, "Mar!" He yelled out.
She couldn't hear him, the only person who could was Steve who was right beside him, watching as Eddie farted forward trying to get to her.
When he reached her he bent down placing his body over her and pulling her into him as though he were a human shield.
Margaret stood at the back behind Eddie watching as everyone strolled into Nancys home.
Even though it wasn't Nancys home.
Margaret looked in every direction she could when entering, Nancy, Steve and Robin heading toward her bedroom, or so she'd assume while she took her time strolling behind.
She could've sworn, for a moment that she'd heard Dustins voice, she hadn't known if she had imagined it entirely due to the feeling deep in her gut that he was left at the edge of lovers lake and they had disappeared. She wanted him to be alright, and perhaps she was hearing things or maybe Vecna was screwing with her.
Steve stopped while Robin and Eddie continued to follow ahead.
Steve making his way back toward Margaret.
"Did you hear that too?" Margaret looked toward him, while he folded his arms standing by her side. A simple nod giving her the answer, "I didn't know if I was hearing things, or maybe this Vecna guy is messing with us" she looked around shivering at the sight.
Steve looked further into what she'd said.
It was practically impossible.
Then came his voice again, and perhaps the voice of Lucas?
Steve and Margaret looked at each other with wide eyes both beginning to yell out Dustins name continuously in the middle of the main room.
"Maybe they do have rabies" Robins voice had Margaret's head snap there way.
"Dustin is here!" She walked toward Eddie.
"Seriously he's like, in the walls!" Steve added to that, "listen".
The three of them stood open mouthed at the realisation of the fact they were right. Dustins voice could be heard through the walls.
It hadn't taken long for the genius Nancy Wheeler to work out they could speak with him through the lights, Margaret hadn't totally understood considering she hadn't been too filled in on Will's disappearance but hey, she'd believe Wheeler if it got them out of here.
Steve stood under the ceiling light while Nancy ran her hand into something that resembled sparkles.
"Dustin is- a light?" Margaret muttered, the five of them sticking their hands up to feel around while Steve nodded, "Recently, I've seen a lot of stranger things so, I suppose Dustin is indeed a light".
Eddie began to tap the light.
Margaret stood staring up at him, waiting for Dustin to respond, through a light somehow.
Margaret had agreed with everyone, Eddie being the hardest to convince that she'd stand at the front door as guard, just in case someone or rather something found them.
She hadn't exactly known how she'd ended up in the situation, well, she did, it all started with babysitting Dustin Henderson.
She was stuck in some parallel universe, she could have every bone in her body snapped or she could be stuck here for good, this wouldn't have happened should she have listened to her parents and stopped her babysitting. Yet, she wouldn't change it for the world.
The entire time stood out front she heard cheers and yells of success.
A smile spreading on her face each time.
A large hand coming down on her shoulder had her jump slightly, only for it to be Eddie, "can you ride a bike?"
"Of course I can ride a bike Ed" she looked to the other three beside him, "it's not really relevant though is it" She gave him a quizzing look unsure why that would be the topic of conversation.
Nancy Wheeler seemed to have a rather large stash of bikes, enough for them to have one each.
Margaret hadn't questioned anything she simply followed Eddie's lead after being told they had to make it to his trailer.
She would never admit it with everything going on around them but, the idea of being back near his trailer, it terrified her. It was almost like she had an irrational fear since seeing what happened to her friend.
But, all she could do now was hope there was method in their madness.
Eddie entered first, followed by Robin and Nancy with Margaret just before Steve. The red illumination making her blink a few times in adjustment.
It was another gate.
Except this one was above them, the roof of the trailer.
She stood staring up, mouth agape, it was where Chrissy had died, exactly where she had died. She knew Eddie and Robin were talking but the words didn't compute.
Until she realised the large red centre burst, something that made her jump slightly once more. Steve the brave deciding to go investigate first.
Looking up she saw Dustin, Erica, Max and Lucas.
Only they were upside down, or maybe, she was upside down.
Dustin had tied together a few old sheets per Nancys instruction which somehow, according to his physics had it come directly through to them. It was like a rope to climb back through.
Robin had gone first, it looked as if she fell from the roof of the trailer to the floor of the Wheeler house.
It was entirely fascinating.
Nancy had gone afterwards with Steve not far behind.
Then Eddie, being surprisingly gentleman like, asked, or more so forced Margaret to go next. She looked at him first placing her hands on his broad shoulders, watching his confused eyes as she did.
She pulled him into her.
A hug.
She just needed a hug.
"I'm sorry" she whispered, face tucked into his curls that were now dry.
Eddie's arms wrapped tightly around her waist.
"For?"
"She died there" Margaret pulled back slightly, still keeping her hands on his shoulders where they had been before, "it's just, I have to climb through there knowing that she-" Margaret looked down, not wanting to finish her sentence and upset herself further.
Eddie put his hands on her upper arms removing her hands from his shoulders while doing so.
She looked momentarily disappointed until she'd realised he was going for another hug, running one of his hands over her hair.
"No, I'm sorry, for leaving you"
A smile found her lips, she needed that.
"Hurry up lovebirds!" Dustin stood tall with his hands on his hips, waiting.
So, Margaret did as she was told and broke contact with Eddie, gripping the sheets tightly in her grasp, giving two tugs to ensure it was safe.
Then she began her climb, feeling the gravity smack her in the face as she got to the top, ready to fall onto the old looking mattress she let herself fall. Eyes closed awaiting the impact.
The impact that didn't come as quickly as she'd expected.
Her eyes opened.
Everything was dark. She was falling in the dark with no sign of Eddie.
Until her back smacked off a hard wood.
After a groan and a whine at the feeling she pulled herself up enough to see she was in the school hall. She hadn't known why or how, but what she had known is she was alone.
Eddie's hands were firm on Margaret's shoulders. He was shaking her the same way he had with Chrissy, only this time he hadn't felt scared not of what was happening, he was scared of what was happening to her.
"Margaret!" He yelled placing his hands on her jaw, her eyes glazed and white, "you can't do this to me Mar" he pulled her closed, wiggling her head, "what is happening to her?!" His yells were loud, hoping somehow she would hear him but knowing the chances of that had been slim.
He could hear Max's muffled response, "Vecna".
Margaret managed to get to her feet looking around the hall which was covered in vines and goo.
It was dark, cold and most definitely eery, even more so now she was alone.
She could see something in the far corner near the doors, on her way she noticed a uniform balled up on the floor, bending down to look it hadn't been just any uniform.
It was Chrissy's.
She felt the tears prick in her eyes, dropping the top immediately and walking away. The idea of knowing she died in that uniform..
Shaking her head to try and shake away the thought she continued her walk to the dark dingy corner she noticed it was something larger than just a uniform, something that was covered in vines.
Getting closer it had been as if a light appeared from somewhere allowing her to focus.
A loud gasp came from her lips as she stepped backwards, sliding due to one of the vines being behind her and landing with a thump on the floor yet again.
This time the tears did fall.
It was Chrissy.
Chrissy was wrapped up in these vines in the corner, dead, with some slug like thing in her mouth.
Margaret closed her eyes hoping it hadn't been real.
"Do you remember what you saw Margaret?" A loud, hollow voice filled her ears, "or have you already forgotten?" She stood up again, looking around for the source of the voice, "when I kill someone, I never forget" the words making her glance Chrissy's way once more, she hadn't killed her, or had she?
Maybe she could've stopped it.
Maybe she had indeed killed her.
