The Pretty Pick - 21

Margaret had been correct, not that Eddie could recall a time where she hadn't been. This diner was like a ghost town, the only people inside - besides the two of them - was a younger girl and an older woman behind the counter. As well as, what Eddie had assumed would be some sort of chef or a cook.

Margaret had made her way straight to the restroom, leaving Eddie stood awkwardly by the counter awaiting her return.

He looked around at the cliche pink and blue theme of the place, the milkshake glasses spread across every table with some straws and napkins tucked inside.

"Was that young Margaret I seen run off over there?" Eddie felt his body jolt at the sound of the older of the two ladies behind the counter, looking his way.

Her elbows held her propped up onto the counter itself while she tilted her head toward the restroom where Margaret had gone. Eddie scrunched up his brows, why would some random diner waitress know Margaret?

"Uh" the hum came from his mouth while he tried to stop freaking out for just one damn second, "yes, that was her" he mentally slapped himself at how unsure and criminal like he sounded.

Criminal like? He thought again. Is that even a thing?  Again shaking his head to snap out of his own thoughts.

He'd be making this clueless woman doubt him if he continued on that way.

The sound of the restroom door opening saved him from this hell, Margaret walked out giving a large smile to this random waitress.

She pointed to a table hinting for Eddie to go grab a seat, which, he could not have done any quicker even if he tried. The boy shot off from where he stood and placed himself snug inside the both with the pink car style leather seats.

"It's been a long long time since I've seen you wander through those doors missy" the lady gave a smile looking Margaret's way, "how's your gramps?"

Margaret's smile faltered at those words.

Her gramps was dead.

"Oh shoot, have I put that big ol' foot of mine in my mouth again?" The southern charm making Margaret giggle for a spilt second, even if it happened to be a rather sad sounding laugh.

"I'm sorry Gloria, my Gramps, he passed away a while back" Gloria's hand finding Margaret's arm to soothe her pain in anyway she could, "I didn't even think to tell you all" life had been a little too consuming for Margaret since that night.

Gloria shooed away her apology.

"Well my love, I can't ease your pain, but I can get George back there to make your favourite" a smile returned to the girls face, "butter pancakes with a sweet caramel sauce" she looked behind Margaret to Eddie who sat anxiously picking at his nail beds, "and for your friend? Same thing?"

Margaret looked back to Eddie who's hands fell when his eyes caught hers.

Clearing her throat she turned back to Gloria, "cheese burger and fries for him" she had always remembered Eddies fondness of burgers after that one school trip they both went on years ago, to a musical, all he had spoken about that whole trip was getting a damn burger.

Gloria let her hand slide from Margaret's to the counter. Watching as the young girl walked away.

Gloria hadn't known much, but from what her gramps had said, that girl had a hard life, and he simply wanted to keep her safe from it.

Eddie watched how delicately Margaret had been when sliding into the booth opposite him.

"I uh- got you a burger" Margaret had now sounded diffident, until now. Eddie hadn't known exactly what to make of it.

Perhaps she simply couldn't find the words to talk to him, maybe she didn't like his attempt to kiss her again. On the other hand, she could be acting this way because she cared for him. He physically shook his head at that thought.

"Do you not like burgers anymore?" Eddies gaze snapped back up to hers.

Again he shook his head vigorously, "no sorry, wait yes- I do like burgers" God the pair of them would seem as if they'd never met before to any onlookers. Besides the face Margaret said anymore. That stuck in Eddies head until it came out his mouth, "anymore?" Margaret's brows crunched in confusion, "you said do you not like burgers, anymore"

Her face softened again. Oh.

She had in fact said that, "I just remember, vaguely, I vaguely remember you liking burgers from a school trip" she had corrected herself midway through.

Eddie knew that exact trip.

He had to sit beside Margaret the whole show, he felt this overwhelming hatred for the musical solely based on how much Margaret had enjoyed it and yet, it was the first time he remembered seeing a genuine smile on her lips for some time.

Eddie let out a small chuckle.

"I see, you vaguely remember that trip" he was mocking her, "I remember it too, if that makes it any less awkward for you" he raised his hands in defence.

"I'm not being awkward!" She answered almost immediately in protest, Eddie simply gave her that raised eyebrow look anyone gives her when they don't believe her, "how am I?" She asked, "being awkward?"

Her eyes fell to his hands which began tapping on the table in rhythm to a song, a song she thought she recognised.

"You have been since-" he stopped, since I kissed you, he thought yet the words never came from his lips. He hadn't known exactly how to prove his point without creating even more tension between the two.

His eyes found her neck again.

He began to think about that dream again. His lips attacking her neck like he was a damn vampire.

My God did he wish he could actually feel her skin on his lips again, it was all he'd thought about and now with her head being tilted her neck had been even more exposed.

Her head head been tilted while waiting on any kind of response.

"Edd-" Margaret was cut off from her probe by the younger waitress, whom she'd never met before, two plates in her two hands.

She was chewing gum, which Margaret didn't really like the idea of considering the smacking was right above her food, although she held her tongue. She simply took in the look of the girl.

Shorter in height, with bleached blonde hair which was long and running freely down her back. Again Margaret had figured working in a diner you may have tied your hair back.

She found this girls eyes on Eddie.

"Which ones for you sweetie pie?" A smirk found the blondes lips between chews.

Eddie cleared his throat, "burger" was all he had said noticing Margaret's eyes piercing through the girl who's name he hadn't known- Lorraine - according to her badge.

She didn't even speak to Margaret, only put her plate down at the edge of the table to Margaret to collect herself. Sending Eddie a wink before walking away.

Margaret didn't believe either of the two spoke at all since their food was brought out. In fact, even now sitting here with the dirty plates there was still a tenseness to the air around them.

She again cleared her throat which caught Eddies attention.

"Love lake is just through those trees over there" she pointed across the road to the large trees with a small walk way between them, "I'm going to leave my car here, maybe that's safer" she confirmed watching as Eddie simply nodded in agreement.

She nodded to his nod which felt like a weird thing to do, why would you nod to someone else's nod?

She then started to think about how the word nod seemed weird now, it just didn't sound right in her head anymore.

She shook her head, sliding out from the booth and making her way to Gloria while Eddie made his way outside for air.

Margaret held up the cash which Gloria would not take, "no baby, keep your money" she shooed her hand away, "you deserve it, putting up with that Lorraine" Gloria shook her head, continuing to scrub the counter top clean with a cloth.

"Well, she wasn't the most chatty" Margaret confirmed, "to me at least".

Gloria let out a laugh.

"Had to hire her, owners daughter and all" Margaret nodded (again), why was she nodding so damn much.

"Well, we best be off" she paused before turning toward the door, "but Gloria?" The older lady gave her a smile, "there's some people out there wrongly looking for Eddie, you won't tell them we stopped by will you?" She felt awful for asking but she also felt this urge to keep Eddie safe.

Gloria ran her fingers over her lips, pretending to lock a key and throw it away, "my lips are sealed Maggie"

That was a nickname she had heard for a long long time.

Not since she'd last visited this diner.

She gave Gloria one last smile before pushing open the large doors, making her way out and looking around for Eddie, Eddie who she couldn't see.

The girl wandered around the side of the steps leading up to the door, still no sign of him.

This was when the fear set in.

Had someone found him? Surely they couldn't have, not from her car being here, no one would've known that she of all people would be hiding out with Eddie Munson.

She walked further round the diner only to find him behind the far wall, the blonde waitress with her back to the wall, twiddling her hair while looking up at Eddie who stood over her. Looking down at her with his lip between his teeth.

His hand sat under her chin tilting her head up.

Margaret didn't know why, or how but what she did know was the feeling of being stabbed in the back. Her lips parted as she blinked multiple times to ensure what she was seeing was real.

Eddie really had been using her.

When had this happened?

When did she develop these stupid feelings for Eddie fucking Munson?

She watched as he leaned down towards the girl, who was closing her eyes awaiting his kiss, this was something that made Margaret feel physically sick. She began to step backwards the sound of the stones below her feet catching Eddies attention.

She turned before he could actually hold her gaze.

"Shit" the word came out quickly and muttered from Eddies lips while the blonde below him gripped onto his denim vest covering his leather jacket.

Eddie detached himself from Lorraine, who tried to cling on.

Margaret had already crossed the road and made her way down the path through the trees, making her way to the inappropriately named love lake. The last thing she felt right now was love.

If she were honest she hadn't felt it since her gramps died.

"Margaret" Eddie yelled after her running across the road, the fear of being seen lost. Taken over by the fear of losing Margaret.

She didn't turn around just continued down the slight hill until she reached the road across from the home and boat shed.

Eddie picked up the pace as she began to cross the road.

"Margaret" his voice was harsher this time around.

Margaret couldn't ignore him this time or pretend that she hadn't heard, all she could do was do what she did best, pretend not to care.

She turned around to find Eddie jogging across the road towards her.

"Yes?" She questioned looking at him while slowly continuing to walk backward toward the boat shed. Unsure exactly how he'd spin this.

He slowed down as he got closer.

"That wasn't what it looked like" he held his hands up, "I swear, she just caught me of-" he was interrupted by Margaret.

Margaret who was still walking backward, halfway to her destination.

"You don't need to explain anything to me Edward" the sound of her old habit made him tense.

"Don't call me that" he spoke irate, his fist balling up.

"Don't call you what?" She gave him the look of innocence, "your name?" Eddie simply shook his head, knowing she was toying with him, "seriously, no explanation necessary" she smiled.

Eddie gave her a look, a rather confused look in fact. He had just seen her turn away from him, looking furious, he watched her all but jog away from him.

"It is Mar, I need to explain what happened" he tried again to no avail.

She held a hand up, now nearly back to the shed, Eddie only mere steps in front of her.

"Eddie it's fine" he felt this wave of peace fill him once again at her calling him Eddie, "we're just friends" the wave of peace soon consumed by a surge of pure anger. Friends? She wanted to play dumb and pretend they were friends.

She watched as Eddie shook his head, a deep chuckle leaving his lips.

She took a quick look behind her at the wood of the shed she's gently collided with, turning her head forward again. A slight raise in her blood pressure at the sudden noticeable presence of Eddie.

Eddie who was now stood right in front of her.

"I dare you to say that again" his voice had this overwhelming sensuality to it all of a sudden, "I dare you to tell me we are friends"

She looked at him utterly clueless, still wholly under the impression that's all he wanted.

Swallowing harshly at his closeness.

Unsure why she suddenly felt so... hot.

"I don't understand Eddie, I thought we were friends now?" She pushed him back, surprised when it hadn't effected him at all, "you said we were friends" her finger pushing into his chest as she spoke.

He took a step back.

"I don't want to be fucking friends Mar!"
