~Dear Diary, ~

~I'd never thought in a million years that anyone would say something positive about my natural hair, it's usually comments like "Your hair's so messy." or "Man, I'm so lucky that I have straight hair, your hair looks hard to deal with."~

~It was totally unexpected, like "getting hit by a car" unexpected. ~

~I mean, it's not really a bad thing, I actually really like it. The compliments, not the getting hit by a car thing, maybe I should change my hair, I'd never really liked to straighten my hair anyway. ~

~Note to self: Hair salon trip on the 25th, should do some research on what hairstyle I should get. And also get hair stuff for coily hair.~

Casiah, Fontana, Connie and I were playing video games at my house, to my shock, Connie was totally beating all of us! Her high score was almost unbeatable.  If I ever needed someone to help me take out robots, Connie's my first pick.

"Damn dude, you'd been getting better at this game." Casiah acknowledged, Fontana pouted and crossed her arms. "Oh please, I beat her record all the time, why don't I get props?"

"Because anytime you do beat it, she has a new one to back her up?" Casiah sarcastically asked, Fontana rolled her eyes and glanced to her right. "Huh. Hey, Rose? Is that you?"

I turned my head to whatever Fontana was looking was when I saw that. An old picture from Christmas years ago during the dreaded ugly sweater days, grandma was in it, grandpops was in, etc, etc.  And there was seven-year-old me at the front, holding up a sign that read "Merry Christmas" with a big smile, missing two front teeth.

"Uh-huh, that was a few years ago. I think I was in 4th grade when we took that picture." I replied, Fontana raised an eyebrow and stared at the picture for a bit longer before she snapped her fingers. "Oh! That's what's messing me up! Your hair looks super different in the pic then it does now."

"Oh, right..." I muttered, I played with a bit of my hair. "Uh, I straighten my hair back in middle school, a lot of people said my hair looked better that way, so I thought I keep doing it." I shrugged. Casiah clicked her tongue and nodded. "Huh, well okay. Well, your natural hair looks really pretty to be honest."

"Wait, really?" I asked, the rest of the girls nod their heads.

"Yeah! But if you like your hair straight, that's good but you also look pretty cute with your natural hair, but that's just my opinion." Casiah shrugged.

"More like fact! Let me tell you, You+ Natural coils= Fierce, Bold, Pure Gold." Fontana leaned back in the couch seat. "Now that is a truth." Casiah rolled her eyes and laugh, I looked at Connie, she was too wrapped up in the video game, but she did give me a big thumbs up.

Fontana cheered when Connie beat the last monster of the game, I tried to join in the celebration too, but all I could do was stare at the ends of my hair, wondering about how it could look like.

Sure, that stuff Fontana and Casiah said really stuck with me, even after the two of them and Connie left my house hours later. I walked upstairs to the bathroom; I opened the mirror and took out my bag, revealing my black and purple straighter.

It has to be 3, maybe 4 years since I'd used it, and I did like how I looked with straight hair, but in a way, I didn't feel like myself when I did have straight hair, the big reason was because I thought Straight hair= Cool kid Stauts. Yeah, any good that did me.

I sighed for a moment, I turned my head and saw the door opening up, Layla was there in her pjs and yawing. "Mhm, Hey Rosetta." She looked at my hands and saw the straighter in my hands. "You're doing your hair already?"

"Oh, no. I'm not even sure if I want to anyway." I shrugged. "I'm thinking about getting rid of it."

"Oh." Layla said, closing the door behind her and sat down on the toilet. "Okay, do it then."

"What?!"

"Okay, one; Don't scream like that again. But yeah, if you want to, throw it away. You haven't used it in a while anyway, ever since the whole uh, "incident" with Mckayla and Andrew."

"Yeah, you have a point." I shrugged. "I just feel weird, I mean, I'm happy to make room, but when I get rid of it, what's next? What am I supposed to do then?"

Layla glanced down and stroked her chin for a moment before she said "I'm not sure what you're supposed to do. But that's okay, it's not a script or a test you can study for, it's okay to not know what your next step is. Trust me, I learned that one the hard way."

I was about to hug her, until I realized that I was holding a straighter, it wasn't on but still wasn't a very good idea. "Thanks, sis. I really mean it."

"No problem, I'm always here for you." We both smiled at each other as Layla left the bathroom and closed the door, leaving me to my thoughts.  Holding the straighter in my hand, I smiled and threw it in the trash, where it belonged.

I jumped up and went to my room, thinking about all the stuff everyone told me today about my hair and stuff, I'm tired of feeling nervous about how I look, it wouldn't kill me try out a new hairstyle and I can do tons of research on the hairstyles I can do and how to properly take care of my hair again!

I grabbed my diary and quickly wrote down everything that happened today before placing it down on my desk. It's a new summer and now they'll be a whole new me.
